I don't think Strong is going to be begging to recruit florida. I know he has ties here, and, likely would snag some players, but... the Texas AD and fan base fully expect him to build a powerhouse with Texas kids. There are plenty of recruits there for him to make Texas great.

Kansas, KState, OkSt, WVU, Iowa St... are the ones that should really be pushing expansion into FL. They are having to try and get recruits out of Texas with 84 other in-state schools to compete against. If they could split between Texas and FL to get their recruits with greater exposure down here, that would be huge for them.

This. We need to hope that the non-Texas schools tell UT: "You can have Houston, but we want the Florida schools."

This season, reporters from every American Athletic Conference team are joining forces to compile weekly conference power rankings, with a sentence or two of analysis on each team. Here are the Week 1 rankings (Correspondent Jeff Odom votes for the Tampa Bay Times).

    Interesting.

    The top...

    1. Houston (1-0): With its 33-23 shocker over Oklahoma, the Cougars made arguably the loudest statement of the opening weekend that they are serious contenders to become the first Group of Five team to make the College Football Playoff. The win catapulted UH to No. 6 in the Associated Press’ poll, the school's highest ranking in 25 years. Quarterback Greg Ward Jr. is nursing a shoulder injury and likely won't play much Saturday against Football Championship Subdivision school Lamar in what amounts to a tune-up for the Sept. 15 conference-opener at Cincinnati. -- Joseph Duarte, The Houston Chronicle

    2. South Florida (1-0): Entering a season of high expectations, the Bulls picked up where they left off in 2015, opening with a 56-20 rout of Towson. Though USF was slow out of the gate with some early hiccups, including an erratic start by junior quarterback Quinton Flowers and a hit that knocked star tailback Marlon Mack out of the game in the second quarter, it eventually settled down to cruise in the second half. The first true test for the Bulls will come Saturday night when they welcome Northern Illinois to Tampa. -- Jeff Odom, Tampa Bay Times

    SOUTH FLORIDA

If UCF doesn't work out, USF could do it. Or maybe their is room for both Florida schools? Hmmm. Well, South Florida isn't as big as Central Florida but Tampa is nice and USF has at least kinda hung with the big boys before with their time in the Big East Conference. However, the Bulls don't really move the needle in any way. Honestly if South Florida is a serious contender it is due solely to its geography and no other reason.

    Not exactly glowing....

If this is legit...you telling me TX vetoed Houston! Like I said if TX wants a campus in Houston they will get one. UH in the end will not stop them. I think they're realizing that. Just my gut instinct and how I've felt all along.

That TX veto is one of the main reasons I think this is fake (That and NIU doing so well.). If it's NOT fake then someone is going to get fired because no one involved would want this released.

So we made the first cut. Not bad.

If this is accurate (and like everything in this that's a big if), all it means is that all of the reasonable teams are still in contention. The fact that they are still evaluating two more AAC schools after Cincinnati, Houston, Memphis, UConn, USF, and UCF means that basically everyone who was ever really under consideration is still under consideration.

I would absolutely love to test the theory and be proven wrong, but I'm skeptical that even if USF runs the table (yes, even with a win against FSU) that it would get into the CFB playoff.

It's not just USF. I don't think ANY non-P5 school will ever end up in the playoffs after a single undefeated season. A non-P5 school would need a perfect or almost perfect season, then a bowl win, then a HIGH pre-season ranking and THEN an undefeated season to get a playoff bid. Even then, it would likely take a "down" year for some of the historically good teams.
