can we tone down best qb in usf history stuff

    i guess anything is possible

We could........but there are only 4 to choose from that were even servicable, much less "great": Barnhardt, Blackwell, Grothe, Daniels. Admittedly, I never saw Barnhardt play, so I only have 3 to choose from, and there were about 10 throws White made on Thursday night that I NEVER saw Grothe or Daniels make. Can he run, no, but he showed skills in one game that we haven't seen since #10 was our quarterback.

Those before the wr breaks throws and throwing over the middle were never BJ and Matt's strong suits. I liked what I saw from White. He gives me hope for the future.

Hope is right.  "Best of all time OMG!!" sounds a bit strong.......but when you think that he's already the 5th best, RIGHT NOW, is it really that far fetched?

We could........but there are only 4 to choose from that were even servicable, much less "great":  Barnhardt, Blackwell, Grothe, Daniels.  Admittedly, I never saw Barnhardt play, so I only have 3 to choose from, and there were about 10 throws White made on Thursday night that I NEVER saw Grothe or Daniels make.  Can he run, no, but he showed skills in one game that we haven't seen since #10 was our quarterback.

  3. Urm, how many CB's are we going to offer??? I count 5, do we need all of them?

    Yes.

Robbins, Ward, Godwin, and Childs are all true freshmen DBs on the roster, currently.  Godwin and Ward are already getting significant playing time.  Robbins was very highly touted, coming out of high school, so he'll get his chance to shine next season.

With spread offenses, special teams options, and the ability to mix and match, you can NEVER have enough DBs on your roster.

  4. This move is all about the locker room.

You cannot preach what Taggart has been preaching and keep a better player on the bench, just to save him for next year.  What about THIS year's Senior class?  How can he look them in the eye and tell them to "do something"?

Starting White is the last straw, and it's a message to every player in the program now and recruits in the near future.

  5. I think the UL game will be huge for us.  We will have a crap load of fans in the stands.  Nothing brings Tampa fans out of the woods like a hot team with a winning-streak. Granted, a small streak but still a streak none-the-less.  The added hype in the stands will propel our boys into unbelievable success vs. the Ville. We will rush the field (ala "vs. Louisville 2005) and the newspapers will read "THE BULLS ARE BACK!"

One side of me truly believes this. However, my realist side says that we are doomed.

Umm, have you ever been to a Louisville game?  They travel.....well.  The "added hype in the stands" will be wearing red, unfortunately.

  6. You guys rag on that stadium all the time but is it really any worse than what UConn has?

Having experienced both, it's not only worse, but WAY worse.

Rentschler Field is small, but it's well done.  There is plenty of room for expansion, when and if that is ever necessary.  It has the feel of a big stadium, only smaller.

Bright House Stadium is.......an aluminum bowl.

It is easy to see that this team is not where we want it to be. It is easy to say fire _____. It is easy to blame the past coach. However, it is not so easy to see what is really happening.

What is happening is that CWT is building a program that will be self- sustaining. When fixing a program it is often necessary to tear down what has existed before and start new. This process is painful for those involved, results usually deteriorate, and it is very frustrating. When observing this process you need to look at where the changes are being made and determine if it is an improvement over what has gone before. This is a judgment call since there is always resistance to real change. That is what is happening in USF football.

What CWT has done is determine where changes need to be made (and they are extensive) and how these changes are to be made. Most of this work was done over the summer and the implementation of the changes began with the fall practice. If his plan is to work he needs to stick to it, regardless of the early results. Those of you who have gone through major overhauls at their job know what I'm talking about. This is not done quickly and painlessly and a football team isn't any faster than changes in the corporate world. So with that said what do we know of the CWT plan.

One, he wants to build the program from beginning to end. This means that you don't go after temporary and quick fixes like JUCO players, that only delays the implementation. You don't adjust to the talent level that is currently here because that delays the development of the newer players as they are constantly learning a different system. It is CWT's plan to improve the program by immersing players in it from the very beginning from frosh to seniors. This means that by the time players are seniors they know the program very well. But in the short term you take some lumps.

Two, he wants to alter the strength and conditioning program. The results from this won't be seen for over a year, this takes time for the program to work and show results.

Three, he wants to change the attitude of we competed well to WTF??? we didn't win? That's a cultural change and will require getting rid of some deadweight but first you need to identify it. This process is already happening. We already lost some players to transfer, we will lose more. You need to hold players accountable. Some players have already had their playing time reduced, a couple of players have been benched, and few players have received punishment drills in practice. Others are getting better and getting more time. This one can only be evaluated by observing who gets how much playing time.

These are the observable changes that I have seen since the start of the season. I'm not privy to what's going on in the locker room but I do know that coaches are not happy with performance and there will be changes made as soon as they have the ability to make those changes (i.e. the replacements know enough to play).

Bottom line is that this is a work in progress and the team will take a couple of steps back before it goes forward. The encouraging part is that we are seeing signs of the program moving forward. The use of Bench (even though he is not ready yet), Tice being looked at as the number 2 running back instead of Pierre (who wasn't getting the job done), more frosh working in the secondary, more rotations on the Dline, etc.

Very well stated and I couldn't agree more with your post. Thanks for the contribution.

I'm way behind, but this is awesome.  100% agree.

  8. I don't get it. You're reasoning makes sense if we're talking about firing Leavitt based on the teams performance after going 8-5, 8-5, and 7-5 or something to that effect.

Talking about a coaching taking over an 8-5 team and going 8-5, 5-7, and 2-4 (losing to 2 of the 3 worst teams on our schedule and almost 3 of 4). Wanting that guy gone makes sense at just about every school in the country. Even in the MAC, WAC, and CUSA.

I see the same team now that I saw in 2004. I think the difference between Leavitt and Holtz is minimal.

  9. The worst thing that happened was 2007? I'll take the travesty of beating auburn, WVU and unc over patiently losing to ball state and temple. But I am, admittedly, often unreasonable.

what is this guy saying? the worst thing to happen was to beat auburn and wvu ?? to be ranked #2?? no the worst thing was to lose to Temple and ball state. unbelievable.

We weren't as good as the polls suggested. It raised expectations way above our level. How is this confusing?

we've had more than 1 QB. obvioulsy not paying attention.blackwell, grothe, daniels, etc. 2 QBs in big east and they may both become total yardage leaders of all time in the conference.

Blackwell was the one I was speaking of. Grothe and Daniels were/are not good Quarterbacks.

we had a guy who is now considered one of the most dominant defensive players in the NFL. so much for no marquee player.

And how dominant was he at USF? Not very. Half of his games were of the "invisible" variety.

I'm so tired of the money excuse for coaches. we have the 2nd highest paid head coach in the big east. leavitt also rose to #2 in big east at one point

I was leaning more towards the assistant coaches. Maybe I should've been more clear. It's about a 70-30 lean towards the assistants.

everyone has a first and second string. everyone has a dropoff from first to second string. another excuse.

The elite teams, the teams USF is compared unfairly to, have interchangeable 1st and 2nd strings. It's called depth. We've never had that.

we have been in the top half of recruiting in big east. nobody thinks we should win national championship. just compete for league title.

So you're arguing that we have had the talent to compete for a league title? We've always had a "if everything goes exactly perfect and we catch every break, we can win the league title" kind of team. That means we're just as close to a .500 Big East team as we've been a Big East Champion team.
