  1. It's Hot, But Bulls Back On The Chill Pill

    By BRETT McMURPHY

    The Tampa Tribune

    Published: Aug 15, 2006

TAMPA - For the second consecutive season, University of South Florida football players are taking electronic pills that monitor their body temperatures from the inside of the athlete to help prevent heat illness.

Players swallow the silicone-coated pills, about the size of a large multi-vitamin, at least two hours before practice, said Eric Coris, director of the USF Sports Medicine Institute and USF's team doctor. Inside each pill is a crystal temperature sensor, battery and electronic transmitter. The pill transmits a low-frequency magnetic signal to an external data recorder held outside the body.

Since two-a-days started Saturday, each day about 20 players, mostly linemen, ingest the pill so their body temperatures can be monitored to help prevent heat illness. USF's trainers hold a wand about 12 inches from the player's back or stomach to record the temperature.

"They asked who wanted to help with the experiment, so I volunteered," USF wide receiver Amarri Jackson said after Monday's second practice. "I forget I even took the pill while I'm out there."

Coris said last year the week before the Bulls used the monitoring system, a number of players needed IVs and some players cramped after practice. After they monitored the players, none needed IVs because the trainers were alerted to any players before their core temperatures reached a potentially dangerous level, Coris said.

Coris and USF's sports medicine staff can study the data through computer readings.

  2. TAMPA - University of South Florida coach Jim Leavitt said a decision will not be made whether to redshirt senior LT Thed Watson and senior DT Tavarious Robinson until late August.

“Thed’s doing really good,†Leavitt said. “It’s going to be harder now deciding what to do with him. I’d like to have him for next year. If we have enough depth, we can do it. I don’t know yet. It’s close. We’ll see.

“Tavarious, I think we’ll be able to redshirt him. I do [have the final say] with Tavarious and Thed. Not normally, but I do with those guys. I’m going to determine their fate. That’s the way it’s going to be with those two."

STILL OUT: Junior NT Julian Riley, who transferred from Florida this summer and received an NCAA appeal to play this season, hasn’t practiced because of an ankle injury.

“I don’t know if he’s good or not because he hasn’t practiced,†Leavitt said.

Other Bulls slowed by injuries include: OG Danny Tolley (pelvis), DE Josh Smiley (foot) and TE Ben Busbee (shoulder).

!THREE OF A KIND: S Nate Allen, DE Aaron Harris and WR Carlton Mitchell, of Gaither, have been the most impressive newcomers after the first week of practice, Leavitt said.

“The freshman offensive line also is a pretty good group,†Leavitt said. “One of the best groups we’ve had with Jeff Ides and Zach Hermann.â€Â

ODDS AND ENDS: Former QB Marquel Blackwell threw to the Bulls’ wide receivers Monday. … Leavitt said all four QBs – Pat Julmiste, Matt Grothe, Grant Gregory and Anthony Severino  did well Monday. “Maybe I should, but I don’t feel uneasy about our quarterbacks,†Leavitt said. “There are more positions I’m concerned about.†Other standouts included RB Corby Erskin and TE Devin Gordon. … Walk-on senior OL Warren Garrison can not practice until the school determines if he has any remaining eligibility.

  3. They will be back, in fact I bet at least one of them reads this post and chuckles because they have never left. Where else can you get this kind of USF news/conversation. A few chuckle heads cannot drive off true Bulls fans. Maybe they prefer to stay anonymous to avoid rehashing the same old arguments, but they are here or will be back sometime during the football season.

  4. The thing is, “If they’re all equal" now then I would have to say that MG is way ahead. PJ has had three years to learn the offense and MG only one. If things are "“all equal" that tells me that MG has more talant and will catch and surpass PJ in half a year or less.

I really get the impression that this is meant to be a motivating comment for MG.

  5. BREAKOUT STAR: FS Danny Verpaele  A freshman All-American as a rookie, he missed last season with a broken foot and now returns ready to continue a promising career.

USF Defensive Back Danny Verpaele Named to Freshman All-America Team

(December 7, 2004) The Sporting News has named USF defensive back Danny Verpaele (5-11, 185) to their third team Freshman All-America squad.

    My bad

  6. E.T. you may be onto something. In that quote it sounds as if Leavitt is trying to inspire (Grothe) someone to beat out PJ. It sounds to me as if PJ is relagated to being the "if all else fails' QB.

I wonder when CJL is going to face the fact that its not every QBs fault that they cannot run this offense. Its suffering design flaws. It can work if all the planets align or if you totally outman an opponent, but the problem is that they only happens once or twice per year.

    Groth - EEEEE !!!

    DEEE - FENSE !!!

  7. USF's Leavitt: LB Only Spot Locked Up

    By GREGG BECNEL Tribune correspondent

    Published: Aug 11, 2006

TAMPA - After the University of South Florida practiced for the first time in full pads Friday, Coach Jim Leavitt said most of the team's starting spots are up for grabs, except at linebacker and possibly at cornerback.

''The only place where there's no competition is linebacker,'' Leavitt said. ''Stephen Nicholas, [ben] Moffitt and [Patrick] St. Louis  nobody is going to get close to those guys. And Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams are pretty strong at the corners.

''This is the youngest team we've had since my first year. By far, this is the most competition we've ever had.''

GOOD MOVE: It seems freshman Nate Allen, who considered staying at quarterback before switching to free safety, made a smart decision.

''Nate's going to play this year,'' Leavitt said. ''He's as good a safety that I've seen in a long time. We wouldn't have moved him if we didn't know he'd be awfully good.''

TYPICAL TEMPERS: The combination of the heat and being in full pads caused tempers to flare toward the end of board drills.

Freshman OG Morgan Mathis and junior DE Treco Bellamy engaged in a scuffle where punches were thrown. Two other minor skirmishes involving other players followed before the drill ended. No one was injured.

ODDS AND ENDS: Senior RB Walt Smith, who shined during spring practice, is sitting out while concentrating on school work. ''Academically, he's got to get some things squared away or he can't play,'' Leavitt said. … Leavitt said he has been pleased with OL Marc Dile and DBs Jerome Murphy, Ryan Gilliam and Jeremy Burnett. ... Keith Abrams, who has experience working with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Bucs, was named associate athletics trainer and director of rehabilitation, assistant AD sports medicine Steve Walz said. ... USF begins two-a-day practices today.

  8. Kravitz settling in at N.C. State

The keen eyes over on the message boards at thebullspen.com picked up a story in today's News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. -- first newspaper I ever wrote for -- about former USF defensive coordinator Rick Kravitz, who's now the special teams coach at N.C. State.

Story re-affirms something we wrote about here on the blog this spring, that Kravitz' decision to leave USF wasn't a money issue. Again, Kravitz made $104,000 at USF, plus an $8,000 bowl bonus, and is making $115,000 at N.C. State, arguably with less job security. Given that all of USF's assistants got at least a $19,000 bump from last year, it's safe to say he even took a pay cut to moev to the Research Triangle, where his new wife had a job offer in pharmaceuticals.

Couple of quick notes. ( Hit the link for more: http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf/ )

    Nice plug Greg.
