  1. We were thinking more along the lines of a "Caligula meets Animal House" road trip.

Wow...the comments that this quote invokes to flow through my demented "think bean" are just not appropriate for this board.  Or maybe just not among any "mixed" public companyl no matter what the gender or maturity levels present.  ;D

  2. If that includes 2 nites and a king bed for me Mrs. B'Doug I'm in as long as the bus ride doesn't turn into one big Frat party.  Mrs. B'doug can be a little less forgiving of youthful exuberance when she contemplates having to rub elbows with it  ;).  When I force the issue to look beyond it she's always happy she participated in a little debachery though.  :)

  3. About 14 years ago, I was at a meeting up in G'ville for all the Florida chapters of my fraternity. After the meeting, we went to their Spring game and it was a freaking ghost town-- 500 people if that. Things must have changed since then I guess.

MikeG, IMO fans are, well, more fanatical now than back in the 80's or early 90's.  Spring games are marketed now for most D1A universities where before it wasn't.  I imagine some HC's didn't want fans around but have been pressured to allow it by alum & athletic associations.

On another note, I went to the UF vs Southern Cal in '82 (Pell was HC then) as a HS jr w/one of my assistant FB coaches.  Wilbur Marshal was a jr at UF.  He had like 15 plus tackles.  The atmosphere was incredible.  I agree about ever visiting G'ville for a football game.  I will probably never go back to the Swamp except for USF's games or if I receive free UF vs FSU tix that do not interfere with a Bull game in the state of FL.

  4. Are u people saying you don't have Wi-Fi at home with a hospital type serving table for a laptop in your bathroom so you can remain in a Bulls chat room during away football n basketball games?  Talk about unsanitary keyboards  ;).  No one here has ever took the laptop to bed to scroll through Bulls Pen message board post before dozing off?  I'm shocked!  :o ::);)

  5. But I'm coming from a very different background, where I spent a long time more concerned about my alma mater's graduation rate than the win/loss percentage.

Now that ur a Bull Bobcat, we expect you to get your priorities in line...understand?!   After graddy-u-aye-shun its all about the Dubyas.  ;D

  6. Kissimmee to Lakeland, why.  Worlds apart, considering that I-4 won't be done for years and even when it is done, Kissimmee is 20 minutes away from UCF via the 417.  Kissimmee is 45 minutes away from Lakeland via I-4.  Most people that live in Osceola County, ie Kissimmee, live no where near I-4, but much closer to the 417 and the Osceola Parkway.

One extra hour of travel round trip to be a Bull instead of a Knight.  For some unknown reason, I can understand making this commitment for higher education every week day for 4-5 yrs.  LOL!  I'm joking Knight fans.

Anyway, personally I don't think any county that has schools that perform poorly deserve a state college in its jurisdiction.  I don't really care if the Top 10% of the student would be the only ones capable of attending that school.  The county must be punished for having a smallish tax base and have a "majority" of impoverished minorities living there.

I also wonder if I push my tongue against my cheek hard enuff will it break through.  Man, what a self righteous opinion to have.  Additionally, USF already has a Polk/Lakeland campus.  Its not like this is a brand new venture.  It just making a bigger commitment to the county.

  7. More than likely we are just planting the seeds for a new university much as we did in Ft. Meyers.    The good news is we have much more name recognition now, so we at least have a shot at keeping it all together over the long term.

Not sure I agree.  Lakeland and St. Pete campus will be about the same distance away with Lakeland easier to get to.  If St. Pete goes indie then most likely you are correct.  There is major growth potential in Lakeland IMO.  Should get my masters so I could teach there.

  8. New USF Campus At Lakeland To Open By 2010

PLANT CITY - East Hillsborough residents could enjoy an easy commute to University of South Florida classes by the end of the decade.

The new Lakeland campus of USF is expected to open around 2010 at Interstate 4 and the easternmost exit of the Polk Parkway, convenient for not only Polk County residents but those in the Plant City area. L. Preston Mercer, vice president and chief executive of USF in Lakeland, hopes for groundbreaking in about three years.

The 515 acres donated by the Williams Acquisition Holding Co. of Tulsa, Okla. is between two of the state's largest universities - USF's campus in Tampa and the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

``There needs to be something done in the middle were we are,'' he said, explaining the selection of the I-4/Polk Parkway site over land offered in Bartow and other cities.

Mercer was the guest speaker at today's Plant City Downtown Luncheon Club, which was attended by many government and community leaders.

    Mercer's major points included:

    * USF's Lakeland campus has grown tremendously in the last five years, with student enrollment growing from 700 to about 2,000 and faculty members from six to 35. To meet immediate needs, construction has started on a $28 million building at the current Lakeland site, which shares a campus with Polk Community College off U.S. 98.

    * The Florida Department of Transportation has agreed to build an interchange for the new USF Lakeland campus site. The interchange should open in about three years.

    * An estimated $150 million is needed to build the new campus, not including $40 million that may be needed for student housing. Funding is still being worked out.

    * Mercer expects 10,000-student enrollment at the new Lakeland campus.

    * USF took some political heat for not locating the new campus closer to Highlands and Hardee counties, but Mercer said most students come from the I-4 corridor and USF offers classes at South Florida Community College in Avon Park.

Felix Haynes, president of the Plant City campus of Hillsborough Community College, said Thursday he would offer Mercer space at his school off Park Road south of I-4. Mercer said he was receptive to the idea.

Maybe now the lousy Lakeland Ledger will cover USF athletics better.  Whata think ET?
