  1. Fact Check:

    42-10 record at home

    49-13

Since its inaugural victory, a 45-6 pounding of The Citadel in September 1998, USF has enjoyed a 42-10 record on its home field.

    the facts are not correct!

Named for a financial services company, Raymond James Stadium has also proven to supply a powerful home-field advantage for the Bulls. Since its inaugural victory, a 45-6 pounding of The Citadel in September 1998, USF has enjoyed a 42-10 record on its home field.

The article was about the Bulls in RJS. So the author was discussing games played in RJS. The Oct 3rd, 1998 game vs The Citadel was the first game the #23/25 I-AA Bulls played in RJS. When the article was written, the Bulls were 42-10 in RJS. Now they are 43-10 and are 50-13 all time at home, both RJS and the Old Sombrero.

edit: Oops, forgot to add the Syracuse win to the all time total. Corrected. Thanks ET.

Citadel seniors go out in style

    BY JEFF HARTSELL

    The Post and Courier

    Citadel Notes

In a jubilant Citadel locker room, the players presented the game ball to a man who has never lost to VMI - school president Lt. Gen. John Rosa.

"This is dedicated to you seniors," said Rosa, who is 1-0 against The Citadel's military school rival as president and never lost to the Keydets as a player, either. "We're proud of you."

The Citadel's 18 seniors went out in style in their final appearance at Johnson Hagood Stadium on Saturday, many of them playing major roles in a 48-21 rout of VMI on homecoming.

"It's a huge honor, a great feeling," said senior defensive end James Wilson. "The younger players really did a great job of stepping up to send us out with a bang, and to go out with a huge win over VMI, winning the Shako, it's huge."

The Citadel hyped the rivalry with VMI during the week, holding a pep rally and bonfire on Thursday that seemed to get the cadets riled up. There were a couple of skirmishes on the sidelines as cadets from both schools tried to make mischief with each other's school flags.

"The last time we had a pep rally was when we played Wofford in my freshman year, and we lost that game," said senior linebacker Raleigh Jackson. "So during the week I was a little skeptical. But this is a different team, different guys and a different Corps of Cadets. They really got behind us and everything came out beautiful."

Among the seniors, wide receiver Gary Domanksi scored his first touchdown of the season, on a 24-yard pass from Duran Lawson. Senior running back Nuru Goodrum also scored, on a 9-yard pass from Lawson. Senior receiver Rontreal Tyler caught four balls for 26 yards, and senior linemen Cale Conant and Adam Peterson helped the offense pile up 257 rushing yards. Kicker Blake Vandiver booted six extra points, but had one blocked.

On defense, senior linebacker Chris Murray had seven tackles, and Wilson added four tackles for loss, including a sack. Jackson had two tackles.

    Taking the oath

Five Citadel players received a standing ovation after taking their oaths to join the U.S. Army during a brief halftime ceremony on Veterans' Day. The five were quarterback Duran Lawson, defensive end Nick Fender, linebacker Chris Murray, linebacker Napoleon Dunn and snapper Jeff Hodish.

    Extra points

--With 171 passing yards Saturday, junior QB Duran Lawson now ranks fifth on The Citadel's single-season passing chart with 1,915 yards.

-- The Citadel's 35 first-half points were the most its scored in one half in at least five seasons ... RB Tory Cooper's three TDs were a career-best, as were RB Montrell Lee's two TDs ... WR Ta'Mar Jernigan's 30-yard run with a reverse gives Citadel receivers 10 carries for 149 yards this season.

--VMI's fake bulldog mascot, Gracie, found herself in the middle of a cadet scrum after a Citadel cadet tried to make off with VMI's flag. The VMI bulldog wore a T-shirt that read, "I eat Citadel dogs" and was brought to poke fun at The Citadel's mascots, The General and Boo. Gracie was unharmed in the skirmish, but may have bitten a cadet, her handler said.

Now watch the video. Pay attention to the cute, blond VMI cheerleader.  :o

  3. the Elon game may be better attended than you think if you consider it will be the home opener-- people will be jonesin' for college football.

Fans jonesin' for college football in Tampa in 2006,

USF vs McNeese St - 26,351, USF averaged 30,222

    2005 vs FAMU - 43,122, USF averaged 38,865

    2004 vs Tenn Tech - 25,546, USF averaged 27,060

    2003 vs #19 Nichols St - 26,460, USF averaged 30,512

    2002 vs I-AA FAU - 22,074, USF averaged 26,804

    2001 vs I-A N. Texas - 25,156, USF averaged 25,820

While McNeese pulled 26,351 this year, USF averaged 30,996 for the other games in 2006.

FAMU pulled 43,122 and USF averaged 37,801 for the other games in 2005.

Tenn Tech pulled 25,546 and USF averaged 27,363 for the other games in 2004.

Nichols St pulled 26,460 and USF averaged 31,322 for the other games in 2003 (includes one other I-AA).

I-AA FAU pulled 22,074 and USF averaged 27,750 for the other games in 2002. (includes one other I-AA).

I-A N. Texas pulled 25,156 and USF averaged 25,930 for the other games in 2001. (includes three other I-AA).

So you can see that with the exception of FAMU, USF pulls smaller crowds for home openers than during the rest of the season. Especially if the home opener is I-AA.

Now it is true that USF attendance has went up since USF went I-A. We'll have to see how the trend continues, as all of these sample sizes are small.

'97 USF averaged 33,039 for the first I-AA season.

    '98 USF averaged 27,143 for the 2nd I-AA season.

    '99 USF averaged 25,053 for the 3rd I-AA season.

    '00 USF averaged 26,414 for the 4th I-AA season.

    '01 USF averaged 25,820 for the 1st I-A season.

    '02 USF averaged 26,804 for the 2nd I-A season.

    '03 USF averaged 30,512 for the 1st C-USA season.

    '04 USF averaged 27,060 for the 2nd C-USA season.

'05 USF averaged 38,865 for the 1st BE season.

'06 USF averaged 30,222 for the 2nd BE season.

    USF averaged 27,968 for the I-AA years ('97-'00'  [26,193 for '98-'00])

USF averaged 26,274 for the I-A independent years ('01-'02)

USF averaged 28,786 for the C-USA years ('03-'04)

USF averaged 34,151 for the last two BE years ('05-'06)

So, I stand by my swag of 35-38k, barring a significant local interest increase. USF is building more local interest and I hope it starts rising exponentially, but I'm not counting on it to do so any time soon. It just takes time to build a fan base.

  4. Elon needs to be 25K to break the record.  Plus if UL & WVU are nite games upper decks will be open.

Last year, UCF and WVU were just over 45k. Louisville was just over 33k and Cincy was 27k. That's an average of 37.5k for those four games. If those teams pull similiar attendance next year, then Elon and UNC will each need to pull 45k to hit an average of 40k.

If Louisville pulls 45k and everything else stays the same, then the Elon and UNC game each need to pull 39K to hit a 40k average. Even with UL at 45k and Cincy at 30k, the Elon and UNC would need 37.5k.

Last year the attendance averaged 38,865 per game for five games. FAMU (43,122), UCF (45,139), Louisville (33,586), Cincy (27,204) and WVU (45,274.) If UNC pulls like FAMU and everything else stays the same, then Elon would need over 45k to get the average to 40k. Even if UCF, UL, WVU and UNC all pull 45k and Cincy pulls 30k, then Elon would need to pull 30k to make 40k for the season. Outside of FAMU, which is a special case, the last time USF got 30k for a I-AA opponent was the homecoming game in 2000 vs #6 Western Kentucky. Also, outside of FAMU, the last home opener for USF that pulled over 30k was also in 2000 vs Jacksonville St (I-AA).

So, my guess would be that unless USF significantly pulls in more local support, USF will average less than 40k next year. My swag would be around 35-38k.

    Kizarvexis

  5. The official USF gamebook has 29,694 for the announced attendance today.

That makes our season average 30,222 for the year.

Our best season for 6 home games was an average of 30,512, our first C-USA season. The best home average was last year at 38,865 (5 games).

    Kizarvexis

  6. NO wait, don't move this yet.

Louisville is winning 30-14 over the Mountaineers in the third quarter. WVU is running on the Cards, but the Cards are passing all over. Not to mention the 5 turnovers by WVU.

Could this be the year that USF beats WVU? Yes, USF needs to play their best, but the WVU-USF game this year might actually be winnable.

Now this is bad for the BE chances for a MNC. IF the Cards go on to win, the Gators will stay ahead of the Cards in the polls, UNLESS the Gators lose another game. That's a possibility that the BE will have to pray for if the Cards beat WVU. If WVU does come back to win, this struggle vs the Cards might be enough to sway some voters to jump the Gators over WVU.

Either way, USF wants whoever wins the BE to be in the top 10 of the BCS and preferably ahead of the ACC champ.

  7. Is Cincy the speed bag then?

If memory serves me correctly we finished ahead of them in league play in 2 of the 3 seasons we have been in the same league.

    Yep.

    2003 USF 5-3 in conf, Cincy 2-6

    2004 USF 3-5 in conf, Cincy 5-3

    2005 USF 4-3 in conf, Cincy 2-5

    2006 USF 1-1 in conf, Cincy 0-1

So, USF was 8-8 in C-USA and Cincy was 7-9 while USF was in C-USA.

USF is 5-4 in the BE and Cincy is 2-6.

Combining both conference records, USF is 13-12 and Cincy is 9-15.

So who is the punching bag, Bearcats? Better look in the mirror.

  8. Sometimes I don't understand the mentality of this board.

Sure our wins are not against world beaters, but neither is Rutgers and they are solidly entrenched in the Top25, and if we would have had Ponton and Julmiste we would of beat the Scarlet Knights.

The only thing we can do is beat the teams on our schedule. Along the way we are getting some positive press around the country and our name is now regularly dropped on ESPN and ABC. Slowly but surely I have noticed the talking heads on those networks, feel more and more comfortable talking about our program and have begun to say "USF" without having to explain who we are.

This is all a by-product of winning, or in other words no such thing as a 'bad win'.

But the facts are the facts. That is who we beat and who our opponents beat.

Do I think we can beat Cincy? Yes. Do I think we can lose? Sure, if the Bulls play badly. Could the Bulls lose every game for the rest of the season? Possibly. Could the Bulls win out? Within the realm of possibility, but don't bet the bank on it.  ;)

I root for the Bulls. The Bulls have been getting better every game. I think the Bulls should go 7-5 for the year. But I wouldn't be surprised with 5-7 or 8-4 either.

    Kizarvexis

  9. Our schedule with who our opponent beat in parens ().

W vs 2-4 McNeese St (WVTech, S. Utah)

    W vs 0-7 FIU

    W vs 2-4 Central Florida (Villanova, @Marshall)

L to 4-3 Kansas (Northwestern St, La-Mo, USF)

    L to 6-0 Rutgers (@N. Carolina, Illinois, Ohio, Howard, @USF, @Navy)

W vs 3-4 UConn (Rhode Is, @Indiana, Army)

W vs 1-6 North Carolina (Furman)

    USF's defeated opponents are a combined 8-25

USF's I-A defeated opponents are a combined 6-21 (with three wins over I-A opponents)

USF's BCS defeated opponents are a combined 4-10 (with two wins over I-A opponents)

The teams who beat USF haven't beat that big of competition either.

    Kizarvexis

  10. UConn has had football for a long long time-- but they only recently moved to 1-A. The same year we did. That is the only possible school that comes close in that category.

    It's all good though.

Not to be too hypertechnical, but U Conn moved to I-A in 2000 and USF moved up in 2001.

I disagree. BOTH teams were 1-A transitional when they played their game in 2000. I remember this being said countless times duringthe broadcast and on the internet.

But, as I-A transitionals, they counted as a I-A win for opponents. So UConn was USF's first I-A win.

    Kizarvexis

    That is not in question.

Jim claims they were officially 1-A in 2000 but they were transitional just like we were.

Check the UConn 2006 Football Media Guide, History section, page 143

    2000

UConn begins play as a Division I-A Independent. The team earns two wins over Division I-A opponents and sets a single-season record for average home attendance (14,166), playing before the three largest crowds in school history (all advance sellouts) in their first three home games.

So they were I-A and we would have counted as I-A, IF they had won. But they didn't. :)
