Has anyone read or heard any explanation from the oh so smart sports media experts as to how it is possible that a lowly non-"power-5" conference can have three teams ranked teams?

That game does not start until 10:30! That alone should prevent them from being a representative on NYD.
I stayed up to the bitter end to watch their last game. Those late west coast games suck for us east coasters. Love me some east coast bias though. 😁

One was the Gators, used the UF logo and colors right down to the last detail.
Assuming this is where I graduated from in the 80's, the school has been the Gators for almost 50 years. We used to do the chomp at football games with the Jaws song (sound familiar?).
I seem to recall seeing a story from several years back about UF getting their tails in a wad about it, but it must have gone nowhere since they are still the Gators.

Gunnerof the Year Watch
Nate Ferguson is your GOTY leader as we approach the season’s midway pointPhoto by Jason Behnken/Getty ImagesOut of pure curiosity, I’ve been tracking special teams tackles this year. Maybe we’ll give a pretend award out to whoever has the most of them at the end. Winner of the award gets it named after him.
Your fake award watch list at the moment:
- USF’s Nate Ferguson continues to shine on special teams. The junior cornerback is tied for the national lead with 7.5 special teams tackles, and the averages are still excellent; opponents are averaging just 5.7 yards per punt return and 20.7 yards per kick return when he’s in on the tackle.

ESPN is playing banjos during our highlight for some reason
I didn't see this, but I would guess it's because the game was played in eastern N.C. where bluegrass music is big.

ECU fans are fleeing the stadium. No Quarter! 😂

From the stadium those Flowers runs looked like slow motion lightning!

Great! What section is the block in?

Okay, so maybe P4. But if we're changing things up, let's just make it P6. Or here's a radical thought: FBS. Yeah, I know... I'm kidding myself. 😉

I don't know the answer either but we're already pretty much segregated into the G5 with all the negative impacts that come with it. Bottom line, I think this P6 thing is pretty much a joke unless someone can tell me exactly what value the AAC would bring to the P5 to even have a remote chance of them taking it seriously ...
Maybe they should just change it to P3. That way they can be super duper extra powerful.

We bought 4 tickets within a block of Raleigh Alumni Association tickets. As of last week we brought the total for just that block up to 55. The ECU Athletic sales guy told us we'd be near other Bulls fans, so hopefully there will be enough of us there to make the USF chants loud and clear on CBSSN. 🐂🏈🤘

The AAC commissioner has been adamant that the conference will never support nor participate in a G5 playoff.
Good!

I could actually deal with embracing the suck if we didn't also have to deal with certain people in the media seemingly trying their best to make us to gag on the suck.

Right now, every division of college football has a national championship: Power 5, FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA and junior college. “Every division,” Frazier said, “except the Group of 5.”
The NCAA does not have any officially designated divisions known as 'Power 5' and 'Group of 5'! The AAC is in the FBS division. Until the NCAA creates a separate, lower-tier division this is a stupid idea that would only solidify the farce that is the "Power" 5.

So it's all about TV contract negotiations for ESPN, and it's all about old grudges for McMurphy. I'm thinking there must be more to it than these well-worn explanations, but maybe that's all there is to it.... I hope the AAC keeps throwing P6 hype in the faces of those that, whatever their motives, seem to want to draw a line to keep the AAC in some sort of oddball "Major Mid-Major" status. After all, it took very little time for terms like "P5" and "G5" to stick in the college football world. A little self-fulfilling "P6" prophecy may just go a long way...

For those who don't know, Brett McMurphy has been the most critical of the P6 label. Based on his past writing, that seems par for the course from him.
This article mentions him and much more. I think it is worthwhile reading.

Very good read. Can anyone explain exactly why the ESPNs and McMurphys of the world don't embrace having another power conference (P6)? To me it seems like it would be good for business, more national level hype for them to cover. It can't just be a negotiation tactic to get cheaper TV contracts for AAC games, can it? There seems to be a bitter hatred from some (McMurphy) toward even the thought of a P6. It's baffling to me. Any thoughts or theories out there?

Utah up 27-17 with 9 minutes left
I stayed up to watch the whole game. Arizona definitely had their chances to win at the end but a non-fumble "fumble" (and terrible replay review that let the fumble stand) ruined it. Then AZ got the ball back with 2 minutes left and turned it over again. From what I saw, even without my green and gold goggles on, USF would handle any of the four teams that played on TV last night, including #23 Utah without much trouble.
Coach Strong on ESPNU Radio today
in USF South Florida Bulls Athletics
Posted
I happened to tune in to ESPNU Radio on XM around 5:30 today (Jeff Rickard show I think) and heard the familiar voice of Charlie Strong. It was a great, informal interview without too much coach-speak. The hosts gave USF a ton of props, including telling Coach that they've been hearing on the street that Florida's best three college football teams do not include the Gators or Seminoles. Strong basically responded by pointing out how UM, USF, and UCF are all undefeated. He graciously said UF and FSU have solid teams. They then asked him if he saw UF's uniforms for this weekend. He had not but they kept him on the phone while one of the football managers looked it up for him. He sounded amused when he saw the pictures, and said maybe they will look better on the players. The hosts jokingly suggested he try using Bull skin jerseys (look up the Gators' unis and you'll get it). Coach just laughed and said we'd just be wearing our colors. Overall it was a cool segment. Coach Strong did a great job and represented the University and our Bulls with his normal class and humility. 🏈🐂🤘
