UCLA is reportedly firing Ben Howland.

Ben was there 10 years, went to three final 4's and is fired after a season he took the team to the tourney...... It's amazing the expectations that program has.

I hear Pitt fans talk about letting Dixon go. He is a very good coach, but Pitt wants more.

Sometimes programs set the bar too high. Like FIU firing Cristobal.

Not 100% sure Mike, but I thought I heard Dixon just signed a 10 yr extension.

I was talking about fan grumblings. That fans are upset with the program and think they need a change ... in a year they made the NCAA tourney. Not saying it was really going to happen. Sometimes I think expectations are crazy. And bringing it back to Jose and USF WBB. The fact that this poster exists and that USF didn't renew Jose (thus asking him to earn a contract this year).

Lets take a hypothetical, Lets say USF lost one of those big wins this past year, USF was on the bubble and ended up in the WNIT. USF fired (or in this case, allowed his contract to run out) Jose. Then, Jose would have taken USF to the postseason 9 out of 10 years. Those nine were the only 9 trips to the postseason in program history. Jose inherited a team that not only couldn't win, but had the stigma of a racism scandal that got lots of national press. This was a very real possibility, and some would have argued "Jose improved the program, but it reach a plateau and it was time for a change." Then we would have rolled the dice on a new coach who might have won, or might have taken us on a downward path (not to pick on Skip, but that is the example in my head now). Luckily this didn't happen, so that hopefully Jose will now get a new 5 year deal that will keep him a Bulls for a while.

By the way, I like Jose and want him to get every penny he can .... but as a donor and a fan, isn't this also a case of poor money management. Jose now holds all the cards, since Doug had said we will renew him, and now we have to pay him based on coming off of the best year in the program's history. USF could have saved up to $500,000 by renewing the contract a year ago, when both sides were on more equal footing.

He is making about 210 now, plus bonuses. USF structures contracts where they put in a "TV - Promotional component" for Football, MBB and WBB (and maybe others). You have to add that to the base salary to get the real number. (If I am thinking correctly).

During the season I was saying 4 years for about a million was about right, Now if I am Jose I want 5 years for 1.5 million.

Well you can still do a firedougwoolard and firestanheath at least until we see how things start off next fall and winter ;)

Check.  And perhaps we should add firedouchebagbullsfans.com for some clarity and balance.

Incorrect!  He was making $190K a number of years ago.

Jose was doing a good job when he had very poor facilities (practice facilities were all but non existent) to attract and train the talent necessary to compete in the Big East..  The Muma has helped this years team more than meets the eye.   He has a number of very good recruits/commits lined up for next season.
