Quarterback U might be facing a quarterback shortage.

Miami's recruiting already took a hit -- top-rated QB Derek Shaw decided two weeks ago that South Florida was too far from his California home -- and it appears the Hurricanes have been jilted by their other quarterback target, Jefferson County's Carlton Hill.

Hill, a Monticello resident who committed to South Florida before visiting UM last weekend, was quoted by the St. Petersburg Times as saying: "My mind is made up. I'm going to stay committed to USF.

"When I visited Miami, I wasn't disappointed. But I just didn't feel it. My heart wasn't there."

If Hill, who passed for 1,764 yards and 20 touchdowns and ran for 888 yards and 12 TDs, does not have a change of heart, UM will likely be down to two quarterbacks, redshirt freshman Kyle Wright and true freshman Kirby Freeman, on scholarship.

That means the 'Canes might have to use a walk-on, probably Jeff Malley, to run the scout team if no one else is signed.

Another option is for junior tight end Buck Ortega, who came to Miami as a QB, to return to that position.

Otherwise, UM is close to meeting its needs. The Hurricanes have 14 commitments, and some may help fill significant gaps: linebacker, defensive tackle, fullback and offensive line.

The Hurricanes still hold out hope for four of the nation's top prospects: Miami Carol City safety Kenny Phillips, Georgia defensive end Kyle Moore, Tallahassee Lincoln receiver Fred Rouse and Pahokee running back Antone Smith.

Commitments are not binding until prospects sign letters-of -intent on or after Feb. 2.

Now how did you know Grothe was going to go to UM for a last minute visit??? nobody should know that!!! crap the cat is out of the bag!!

Common  UCF guy you come on here and start rumors about Grothe  saying he is going to UM  now why would you try to do that  most people know who I am and it is totally untrue Matt is a BULL!!!!!  Did get a call today at the school from UM asking how solid his commitment was!
