Spring Report: Coach Holtz Unveils First Depth Chart

Courtesy: USF

        Release: 03/29/2010

TAMPA – University of South Florida head coach Skip Holtz announced an initial depth chart at the start of practice on Monday afternoon.

The depth chart is the first of the spring and the first of the Holtz tenure.

Among the notable items on the depth chart are a few position changes:

*  Sophomore Lindsey Lamar has been moved from running back to wide receiver, where the coaches hope to display his world-class speed.

*  Redshirt-freshman Isaac Virgin, who reeled in a long catch in Saturday’s scrimmage, has moved from tight end to fullback and is currently backing up Richard Kelly.

* Junior Jeremiah Warren has moved from offensive tackle to offensive guard, while part-time starter Jamar Bass is in the top spot at left tackle.

* Defensively, sophomore Jon Lejiste is in the lead spot at strong safety after playing primarily at nickel in 2009.

* Redshirt-freshman Luke Sager is second on the depth chart at defensive tackle behind Terrell McClain.  Sager was previously listed as a defensive end.

* As expected, senior Jacquian Williams has stepped into the lead role at strong side linebacker, while sophomore Sam Barrington is in the No. 1 spot at middle linebacker.

* Sophomore tight end Jeff Hawkins, who played sparingly in 2009, debuted as the top tight end.  He is backed up, in order, by Andrew Ketchel and Andreas Shields.

*  Eric Schwartz is listed No. 1 at kicker, ahead of Maikon Bonani, who redshirted last season due to injury.  At punter Justin Brockhaus-Kann is ahead of freshman Renato Proia.

Cool, nice to see what the coaches see.  I think lamar at WR could work out.

Definitely. Coach Patrick was hyping up Sager and Forte so now that he is the DT coach, it is interesting to see him have a pull to get one of his guys on the inside. Exciting to see that Forte is 3rd string, which means our D Line is incredibly deep and talented. Good god our front 7 is going to be wrecking people this year which is needed since our DB's don't impress me.

Lamar to WR is good move, last season coaches had all season to get Lamar on field but they kept running the 150lb running back up the middle.

Glad we got smart coaches, is a fresh change.

Stop the run and run the ball. If we can do that effectively we win the BE and go to a BCS bowl in January. The tight end postion becomes much more important now, we need someone that can make plays at the position. Dont' forget Mike Hayes will be #2 or #3 RB to start the season. I think Landi will move up by the end of the year. QB depth is scary. Excited about this season. I'll be staying at the Embassy Suites on Campus Friday Night. I'll ask Skip to write a message to the folks on Bullpen :)

I like the idea of lamar at WR as long as they dont send him running routes in the middle of the  field.

God i wana see lamar's speed on a fotball field. Hear so much about it. Hopefully we can get a mismatch with a linebacker or even a safety trying to stay on him at wideout...
