NIU football: Huskies face tall task in South Fla.

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois defense will have its hands full today.

After opening the season with a heartbreaking triple-overtime loss last weekend at Wyoming, the Huskies will try to bounce back against a talented South Florida squad at 6 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa – hoping to avoid the first 0-2 start since 2008.

“Their (running) back and their quarterback are exceptional, and all of their wide receivers are good,” Huskies coach Rod Carey said. “Their O-line is big and physical. They play downhill on you. Their offense is as good as we’ve probably played in a while.”

Although there are rumblings Bulls star running back Marlon Mack (1,381 rushing yards last year) might not play because of a concussion he suffered in Week 1, South Florida features dual-threat quarterback Quinton Flowers, who threw for 2,296 yards and 22 touchdowns and rushed for 991 yards in 2015.

In the Bulls’ 56-20 win over Towson to start the year, Flowers was 8 for 18 for 178 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and ran for 46 yards and two scores.

“You can’t just go ahead and do things that are going to allow him seams to run the ball, whether it’s by design or scramble,” Carey said of Flowers. “You have to go ahead and ....

They just think they should be able to plus up Towson's total by at least a TD. I don't see it either.
