Program record five Bulls named to seven national award watch lists, all are juniors or younger

Mack & Nichols each named to two award watch lists

TAMPA, JULY 14, 2016  – USF saw its number of players named to national award watch lists climb to a program record five players on seven award lists Thursday as junior running back Marlon Mack (Sarasota) was named to the watch list for the 27th Doak Walker Award and junior quarterback Quinton Flowers (Miami) to the watch list for the 40th Davey O’Brien Award.

Mack, earlier named to the Maxwell Award watch list, joins junior cornerback Deatrick Nichols (Bednarik & Thorpe Awards) among Bulls named to multiple watch lists. Junior linebacker Auggie Sanchez (Butkus Award) and sophomore tight end Elkanah Dillon (Mackey Award) have also been named to national award watch lists entering the 2016 season. All are juniors or younger. More Bulls are expected to be added to watch lists as announcements continue through the end of the week.

Mack is one of three American Athletic Conference players named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation’s outstanding collegiate running back. Mack led The American in rushing for the second-straight season in 2015 as he logged a USF record 1,381 yards and 6.6 yards per carry. The two-time first-team all-conference back enters 2016 with 2,422 career yards and 17 touchdowns, just 309 yards and eight touchdowns shy of the USF career records. He posted a USF record nine 100-yard games in 2015, including in each of the Bulls’ last five games and a 230-yard outing vs. Temple.

Flowers is one of four American Athletic Conference players and just 30 nationally named to the watch list for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award, awarded annually to the nation’s outstanding collegiate quarterback. Flowers set USF records, passing for 22 touchdowns and rushing for 991 yards in 2015. He completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,296 yards and had just eight interceptions in 276 attempts. Flowers posted 3,287 total yards and accounted for 34 total touchdowns (12 rushing). He set a USF and American Conference record for a quarterback, running for 201 yards vs. SMU and led USF’s “Gulf Coast Offense” to 16 team records, including most total yards (5,741), touchdowns (54) and yards per game (441.6 ypg) in a season.

Recipients of the 2016 Doak Walker Award and 2016 Davey O’Brien Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 8, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas in early 2017. The 40th Annual Davey O’Brien Awards Dinner will be held Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas

Coming off the program’s first bowl appearance in five years, USF returns school season record holders at quarterback, running back and wide receiver and four all-conference selections. The Bulls return 93 percent of their offensive yards from a record smashing offense that posted school marks of 5,741 yards and 54 offensive touchdowns in 2015. While the Bulls averaged 33.6 points and 441 yards of offense per game, the defense ranked in the top 25 in the nation in interceptions (14th), turnovers gained (24th), and tackles for loss (13th), and in the top 35 of seven statistical categories. The Bulls return seven of their top nine tacklers and players that accounted for 12 of their 17 interceptions and 16 of 25 turnovers gained.
