Second national watch list for junior cornerback;

Bulls named to four national award watch lists thus far

TAMPA, JULY 11, 2016  – USF junior cornerback Deatrick Nichols (Miami) has been named to the watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate defensive back. It is the second major national award watch list for Nichols who was also named to the Bednarik Award watch list last week.

Nichols is one of four American Athletic Conference players and 39 players nationally named to the Thorpe Award watch list. USF now has players named to four national awards watch lists with more expected as watch lists continue to be announced over the next week. Joining Nichols (Bednarik & Thorpe Awards) on national watch lists are sophomore tight end Elkanah Dillon(Mackey Award) and junior running back Marlon Mack(Maxwell Award).

Nichols led USF with four interceptions and five pass break-ups in 2015 and earned first-team all-conference honors. He ranked fourth on the team with 62 tackles and added 8.5 tackles for loss (third on the team), two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a sack.

The Thorpe Award was established in 1986 and is named after history’s greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe.  Thorpe excelled not only as a running back, passer, and kicker on the offensive side of the ball; but also stood out as a defensive back.  In addition to his legendary performance on the football field, Thorpe played professional baseball and won Olympic gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon. The Thorpe Award winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8, 2016 on ESPN.

I can't remember the last time we have had so many players on these watch lists. Great to have talent on this team!

Yep very nice to see. I really hope to see their last-year talent come back better this year and ready to make some more waves.
