Uptempo, downtempo, I really don't give a **** as long as its the rightempo for winning ....

Exactly! Seth had everybody playing streetball, which was exciting. But we never won a thing.

    Winning is the best style.

I swear, if we have all that talent coming in and no longer playing the Big East schedule next year, and if we blow chunks again, I'm going to be join the Dark Side. I'm just tired of losing.

  2. The one position that Holtz actually recruited fairly well was OL. If we can find a decent RB and the defense improves we can be competitive right away.

Hmmm. Very interesting. I had no idea he did that. Great, if true. Leavitt had the worst time bringing in good linemen. Or maybe he didn't care about them.

I think like mentioned above, it's the offensive line that's going to be the crucial piece of the puzzle.

RBs, I think we actually have some good ones. Granted, they don't have the experience. It may be the rotating-RB again, but we'll get some yards, if there's run blocking. I mean in the old scheme, the RB was mainly there to keep the other team guessing.

Defensively, it may be something that we can count on. Heck, a former NFL defensive coach has got to be able to put together a group that can stop the likes of ucf and Houston. --One would think!

  3. Disclaimer: I'm no football guru. Though, I was pretty good at Tecmo Bowl.

(read the bold for the executive summary version!)

Leavitt installed an offense based on the QB doing most of the work, with fast receivers running everywhere. We could never run the ball well out of the back position because it's tough as heck to get a top RB (okay, we got Hall but he was a JUCO), not to mention good offensive linemen. And I always thought it was the latter: poor run blocking.

And then we got great athletes on the defensive side. He pumped them up before games and they went out and caused havoc -most of the time.

Case in point, I don't think we've had many players drafted on the offensive side of the ball.

Coaches who recognized Leavitt's trick always managed to beat him, like that guy who coaches for the Bucs now.

Holtz stepped in and inherited a pretty good system, at least in year one. And then I don't know what happened. Well, yeah, the defense went south... Okay, but that's a dead horse.

In comes our current coach, who wants to install a completely different kind of football system.

Brad had brought it up in another thread, about all the positions other than the QB. And I think that's a good point.

Is it a matter of switching everything offensively and then just pulling the switch or does it take a few years?

    (1) Do we have the line people to block for a 1,000-yard runner?

    (2) Do we have that kind of workhorse runner?

    (3) Do we have the QB and receiver(s)/TE combo to get us that first down each time?

Right now, it worries me a lot, the offense that is. Coach came in as the signing period ended. He had no time to bring in the guys that are needed for his kind of offense. I don't see how the staff will make all the offensive changes necessary for next year and be successful --when we don't have all the right players.

I'm hanging my hat on the defense. I hope they are a great bunch, the best we've seen in years. We're going to need them to step up.

  4. It's great that the ladies won the conference title. But I think how they did was truly impressive. They had to dig themselves out of that huge slump at the start of the season and kept on finding their way back to success. You have to appreciate the work ethic and the dedication that the whole team exhibited this season!

  5. Does anybody know if Mike White is allowed to come on campus and practice this summer?

If he doesn't attend classes this summer, that means he's not a student, which means there's got to be insurance issues and all of that. I'm only guessing.

I just want him to get all the practice that he needs to have a chance at starting next year. That's my hope, anyway.
