Huh?  Why would you blame a player who transferred here, helped turn the program around and won a conference championship??  USF got as much out of these kids as they got from USF.

What is is your actual definition when you say "turn the program around"? Does that mean for a week at the beginning of the season where we win 3 games in a row after going 0-30 the previous year? Is it being 1 game over .500 after a month? Is it winning a conference championship for 1 season or is it a national championship in 1 year? What is it called when the core of the team leaves during the off-season and the team then goes 0-30 the following season? Is that actually "turned around"? "Turning around a program" for USF is not yet realized because it takes more than 1 season to come to that determination. If we revert to the status quo of USF basketball next season, I would not say things were turned around at all in terms of the program. It was a good season with talented players but most of those players have left. Basketball only requires 5 players on the floor to win, so during any given season, you can quickly advance or quickly revert from the previous season. When you lose 60% of that core 5 man roster (arguably the core 3 of the success of this past season), nothing has been turned around. It remains to be seen whether this was a blip on the radar. "Turning around a program" to me is defined as sustained success after a period of sustained failure or stagnation. If those guys aren't here for more than 1 season and the success shifts back into failure, they, in fact, did nothing for the sustained success of turning around the program. But that remains to be seen.

Unless you are volunteering to help them financially later in life, post-playing career, can't make any comments on their decision to provide for themselves and family.

I'm sorry, but I guess I'm of an old school mentality. College basketball should not be a lottery where some players win prizes along the way (I continue to oppose the view of it being Professional Lite -- this is where I base my opinion). College sports are not a way to make a living and getting a temporary payday as a college student is not a living, it's a lottery win that, in my opinion based on the statistical information available for lottery winners, will ultimately be blown by a very high percentage of these guys in their 20s. There will be a lot of regret and I fear a lot of drug abuse and crime ahead for many of them who quickly blow through their college lottery win. I guarantee you that most of these NIL guys aren't setting up retirement accounts with moderate growth projections over the next 30-40 years but are rather buying high-end clothing and sports cars. It's wholesome to think they're caring for their families with their NIL but I'm telling you, that's not the case (some may be, but that's not reality). Be honest with yourself. Most of these guys will blow through the money and will end up right where they would be or perhaps worse off without having received it. It's the few who make it to the pros and have continued success with multiple contracts who will make a living from sports and not just a lottery payday.

  2. Can we ban the phrase "can't blame him for.../ can't blame the players for..." from TBP? It's beginning to be overused. If this is a business, then we can stop looking at these players like kids who have a genuine desire to play college ball while getting a free education for the team that put a lot of time, resources, and efforts into bringing them to USF. They have no loyalty to our program/ school. Players today are loyal to the dollar and that's it. So when I'm looking for someone to blame, I'm going to blame the athlete who chooses to leave USF to get money and attention for himself. That's what I'm going to do, don't fault me for having my own opinion, everyone else on here can do as they please. I won't criticize you for it, I'm only critical of the overused phrasing lol.

No way Coach rebuilds 2 yrs in a row with same success. I'd like to be wrong but....

He didn't "rebuild" either. He came in with 3 of his players he had already been coaching (one being a defensive POY and the later to be named co-POY CY. He had Miguel become a really good player either through his own pre-destined development or maybe through CAAR and staff's coaching. CAAR also got Pryor who was a tremendous factor on the court and probably played above his level at times when he was on and was also lights out from the FT line (a previous problem for USF basketball). CAAR came in with a few aces in his pocket, a crappy conference and a bit of luck. Great season but I wouldn't say he "rebuilt", this next season will be a rebuild.

It is going to turn out fine. USF hired a great construction company

The great construction company will do their job and build what they’re told to build but it’s the design that’s lacking. The construction company isn’t what matters for what it looks like, but it is a good thing a great construction company is there to build the ugly structure safely and soundly. We definitely don’t want any issues with execution of the subpar design.

Did someone donate a few brink trucks to the NIL fund? If not he isn't coming here.

Right? And because of the UV index.

But Arkansas, on the other hand, has MASSIVE boosters/ donors. Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones, Denver Broncos co-owner/ Walmart owner Rob Walton, and John Tyson of Tyson Foods to name a few.

Somewhat enlightening, I saw nothing about dentists...

It's really only 2 cleanings for the year. Maybe if he gets one before he leaves Florida, it's only just the 1. If he can time it correctly, he can get his 2nd on a short trip home...could avoid those Arkansas dentists entirely. I was on the fence whether I should include that but then I rationalized it that way so that's why I didn't include them. If you're looking for yourself, I'd be happy to go into much greater details about dentistry comparisons between Fayetteville and Tampa.

That is enlightening but what does it have to do with 18-22 year old basketball student/athletes ....?

Just giving the people on the board some toilet time reading material. He can practice, eat, sleep, and attend online classes from Arkansas's gym for a year, he doesn't even need to venture outside. Just some info for the curious bunch out there for the comparisons to Tampa using some kind of metrics.

72% of his FGs were from deep. Looks good, but his 2FG% was low last year and for his career.

That fits right in with CAAR's style. Without looking, I'm guessing many of our guys from last season took a high % of their shot from behind the arc. That's not an issue for us.

  9. 1 minute ago, Triple B said:

I'm guessing he was already offered more before he entered the portal, which entered into his decision ....

Do you know if they are permitted to be offered an NIL amount "officially" without entering the portal first? I don't know the answer, that's why I'm asking.

Is CY "gone" or can he look around and then come back?

He can come back as far as I'm aware. I don't see why he would though because he had a great season and will get offered more money someplace besides USF. If, for some reason, he wants to turn down the offers, I believe he's eligible to come back if CAAR and the team want him. I've seen it happen in football, never really noticed it in basketball.

Consolidation is end game capitalism stuff and it’s happening nearly everywhere. George Carlin cover this pretty well, “illusion of choice” I believe he called it.

Exactly. It's definitely end-stage capitalism behavior and @Bull94 is willing to burn the entire system to the ground for the consolidation of power into the hands of the select few in the name of "capitalism". This isn't capitalism, it's more like using quasi-capitalistic ideas during a period of time when capitalism in its healthiest form can't thrive. It doesn't lead to the outcomes of healthy capitalism, it leads to looting of the coffers by the ultra powerful before the entire system collapses and leads to something else, such as feudalism. You can be pro-capitalism but also realize this isn't right for the system that was based on the exchange of a free college education, amateur status and everything else included for a college athlete, as well as the ability to continue playing your sport against better competition while working to possibly become a professional in your sport.

just because the powers that be have been able to control the labor market in college athletics for so long doesn't mean it's right.

This actually sounds like you're the marxist here with your pro-worker viewpoint. You seem to be in favor of profit sharing amongst the workers like a communist ideal rather than in capitalism where the stakeholder reaps the benefits of company they've made. The argument of paying the athletes because the universities make money from their "workers/ athletes" is no different in demanding that Fortune 500 companies pay their workers a % of the revenue. That's not capitalism, that's marxism. You're the marxist and don't even know it.

    are you a marxist?

USF will be fine. we may not end up at the top level but with a minimal donor base and not much demand for the product it's understandable.

You think we should be "allowed" to compete with programs that bring in 5x our revenue by I guess spreading the wealth. That's not how the real world works. The rays have to compete with the yankees when they spend 3x what the rays do.

sorry but the power is shifting to the labor(players) and away from the capital(schools).

not much they can do about it and honestly with the ridiculous sums of money being thrown around the players deserve a chunk.

Capitalism?  Free Trade?  National economic systems?  You set yourself up as the only fair person, laugh at the rest of us hypocrites, and then pivot to national economic philosophy?  We're talking about college football, just as a reminder.

These are not your best posts.  Put the shovel down.  The hole is just getting deeper.

Yes, and if he wants to make a reference to capitalism and stick with that argument, this system was enacted by the powerful cabal of college sports elites to deepen their pockets and is not meant to make things better for everyone across the board. It will allow those with systems that have already been established with massive donor pools to prosper while destroying those who are still working on things. These elite members are now circling the wagons to consolidate everything for themselves at the top and force everyone else (that includes USF) out and you're arguing in favor of it. To continue this further, USF is a mom and pop store that will be eaten up by the big box retailers, along with dozens (CFB) if not hundreds (CBB) of other D1 programs around the country. As a "capitalist" system, that's what happens over time as cronyism enters. This isn't a pure capitalist system being set up in college sports from stage 1, it's a system of corruption and greed entering as the nationwide capitalist system simultaneously enters its final stage. For those school who will now go without the ability to put food in their kid's mouth (maintain and grow their programs), that's a problem. Do we let the market simply take out the weak college sports programs while those who already have the upper hand continue to benefit? Does the government interfere in this "free" system and increase spending of tax payer money to keep the status quo? Or should the new system have never been installed for the betterment of maintaining the system as soundly as it was? A NIL system like this is going to have harsh consequences for those who don't have the resources. Additionally, those who don't have the resources will never be able to get those resources to even get going. It'll eventually be like 1972 Dolphins playing against high school teams. Those "high school teams" will not be able to compete, fans won't have interest in them, no one will buy tickets, TV time or merchandise. NIL systems for the lower tiers will dry up so who will pay those athletes? No one? That defeats the purpose of even having those teams which are now on the level of a community league squad. Now we have professional sports. Why do you think the NBA can't have 351 basketball teams like D1 basketball? There just aren't enough fans, not enough money to be made, and the players wouldn't get paid as much -- except by the top 30 NBA teams that currently exist -- it would dilute and degrade that whole system. All of this will bull will cause these programs to go belly up without MORE government assistance and that can't happen when government spending is out of control and across some metrics, bankrupt. What's the solution?

I don't think the kid is eating Chipotle on your dollar, but I get your point and it is valid.  I know a lot of fans are frustrated that players want more, more, more when they didn't have the same opportunities.  Student/Athletes should be grateful for everything they get.  Whether we like NIL or not, it's the current model and we can embrace it or complain.

For me personally, I have grown to hate professional sports.  I don't even enjoy watching it anymore.  I like USF because I feel like the joy to play is pure.  I look forward to showing up and cheering on the guys who put on that uniform and dive on the floor.  Win or lose, I can respect that.  Or you can pay Ben Simmons 200M to sit out because his feelings were hurt.

It may not be my exact dollar that buys him extra guac but it’s the same idea as saying my taxes pay some public official’s salary. I’m sure at some point he’ll buy Chipotle and it may or may not come from the money I gave him to play at USF. Beyond that, I think the purity of college athletics was identified because the players played for their ego, their team, their fans, their school. Now with paychecks that will continue to increase just like in the pros, they play got the paycheck. The line between the pros and high-end college athletics is blurring to the point that it’s almost no different in what drives the players. You will likely eventually get to the point of feeling the same way about college as you do the pros, that is, as long as NIL is in place.

  16. I’ll tell you this right now, I’m not donating $20 a month to NIL so I can buy some kid Chipotle once a month whilst he also gets a free education (unlike mine, which I had to pay for). Shut the whole system down, college sports are ruined. Can’t wait to see what happens to all of this over the next 10-20 years. The divide between the haves and the have nots is going to gape wide open until it no longer works. Are we going to be shutting down athletic programs left and right in this country and only allowing the strongest to survive? Are we going to begin merging schools? This was a mistake.

  17. Want to keep your coaches? Get into a better conference, get that TV money and pay them what they're worth. Until then, any bit of sustained success will result in poaching by those who have that setup already. It's pretty simple. It's not the facilities, it's not the location, it's not the administration, it's the money and the lack of opportunity to really be great on a national stage. It's just a fact.
