  1. Sure matt went nuts using the spread earlier this year and I expect him to do it again. My point though is that these offenses such as the spread, the wing-t, the wishbone....they are all offenses that work when the level of comeptition is low and speed is not a prevailing factor. But if you are going to step up and play higher level competition, the speed makes it impossible at times to run these offenses. There's a reason the wishbone was ditched in pro and ncaa. There's also a reason that you don't see much of these type base offenses in the major BCS conferences.  (whereas a spread formation seems to be almost a standard in the WAC, MAC, etc) We are in a conference where we are the only southern team. Trips to schools like W.Virginia, Uconn, Rutgers, and Pittsburgh later in the year will see us in less than fair weather conditions to "spread" the ball. Moreover, all of our kids are Florida born and bred and will have enough issues adjusting. Do you think that the spread gives us the best chance to win a game in Morgantown in November? Do you think that we can manufacture rushing yards consistently in that weather with this type of offense? Maybe we can, as a Bulls fan I hope we will....I just can't see how the spread is going to give us the best shot at competing. When the leaves turn brown, you have to be able to pound the rock. And I can't imagine that a running game that requires our QB to constantly run up the gut is the best we can do. We're lucky to have Matt Grothe, he's made it look alot better than it should. Now do louisville, florida and w.virginia run the spread? Admittedly, Texas did win a national championship and yes, we've had some success with it as well. But I can't shake the notion that these examples are more exceptions rather than the rule. I'm skeptical that this is the offensive scheme that will consistently win us games year after year, and take us to the next level.
  2. There is no way we are going to go anywhere in the future with this pop-gun gimmick offense. In order to win, you must run and stop the run. We need a bruising fullback in the backfield to out muscle opponents. Bring us an I-formation, or even a split back west coast. The point being that a more pro-style offense is the only way we move fwd as a program. The time is now....
  3. I don't think I'm confusing what Coach said....but perhaps he was referring to Samuels weight?
  4. Q. How do you stop Rutgers football players from crashing your party? A. Call it a bowl game ;D
  5. I actually called into the CJL's show this evening and asked Coach about getting the running game going as well as getting Keeley Dorsey more involved. He admitted that it 's hard to go away from rushing Matt when he is having success, but getting positive yards out of the backs was something that they needed to do a better job of. Regarding our running back situation, he acknowedged that initially upon losing Andre Hall, they considered going for a JuCo...but figured there was no point in having a third string JuCo. However, now that Ponton and Plancher are out...they've had to dig deeper into the backups than they expected. He admitted that Williams is in there the most because he knows the most plays (ie. coverages, protections, etc.) He made mention of Aston Samuels having talent as well. As for Keeley, he was very impressed with the "kid from Belle Glades" who is "a great person" and described him as having lots of speed. Coach said Keeley did not necessarily run with enough confidence yet though and also said that he still is only about 170 pounds. They had originally hoped that  he could have used the year to put some weight on, but with the losses at RB, he was pretty much pressed into service. I have to admit that Coach went alot more in depth than I expected. (It might have been because they were excited to get a call. I was only on hold for about 2 minutes!! )
  6. College football might have been born in Jersey, but at least it had the good sense to get perfected in Florida. Wow...that's bumper sticker/T-shirt worthy....
  7. Wow...you aren't just an economics nerd...but perhaps a statistics nerd too! Seriously....those are real interesting figures....thanks for posting them!
  8. Butch Davis would make a lot of sense....but would they take him back? He didn't exactly leave with their blessing to Cleveland....
  9. You must be the guys I was high fiving all during the UCF game! You guys rock! BTW..hope you continue to light into Bianchi....
  10. I won't argue with you. Notre Dame would have to be good to win out. But at the same time, something doesn't sit right with me about a BCS school going undefeated and not getting the chance to play for the title. The problem is that it's hard to quantify who is truly more deserving. Do we look at who has better coaching, recruits, etc? Given the argument on strength of schedule...one could even say a 2 loss Notre Dame team might be more worthy than WVU depending on how much they lost by and to whom. We'll never really know.... <insert arguments on "why we need a playoff" here>
  11. So long as there is at least one other major college undefeated, I'm skeptical on WVU getting enough love to play in the championship game. Pollsters have ways of jobbing deserving teams if they can find even the smallest justification. (in this case supposed "weak schedule"). As an example...if a team like Notre Dame were to run the table and look impressive doing so, and OSU remained undefeated...do you think the pollsters would hesitate to have a one loss notre dame team leapfrog WVU? True, that would be a royal screw job...but it could happen. Big East fans need to hope that our champion is undefeated at the end of the year..and then watch to see how everything unfolds.....
  12. Hey now....those coaches could always go to the O'Leary school of creative resume writing before they interview for their next gig... (I know, I know...that was just too easy...)
  13. 40,000 is attainable, provided the students come out like they have been. Rutgers has a lot of alumni locally who will definitely turnout to see their team if they are undefeated at that point....
