In a blog post on EA’s official site, EA Sports GM of American football Cam Weber posted, “today I am sad to announce that we will not be publishing a new college football game next year, and we are evaluating our plan for the future of the franchise. This is as profoundly disappointing to the people who make this game as I expect it will be for the millions who enjoy playing it each year.â€

Saw this too and it really ticked me off. I hope they're happy with themselves. So long college football video games.

So you would allow yourself to be exploited so that others could enjoy exploiting you?

    Methinks not.

No, because if I make the CHOICE to sign a contract which allows the entity I'm engaging in a contract with to share my likeness by way of TV rights and merchandising licenses, I know going in that that was the case. Are some of you guys really inferring that these players were so stupid they didn't know going in that their likeness was going to be on video games, on team jerseys and on TV? Give me a break. I remember not too long ago when many players were ticked off because the player on the video game didn't look like them and didn't have similar attributes. Funny how that's changed now that slimy attorneys and money is involved. Once again, nobody forced anybody to enter into this dynamic.

Lets see if 2k sports picks up the project

2K Sports is not going to pick up a project that EA abandoned over legal issues.

Now people are speculating about TV rights. Will students atheletes sue for being on TV and not being reimbursed?

They might as well. I mean, what's one more frivolous lawsuit? What a bunch of greedy scumbags.

Greedy scumbags?  EA and the NCAA was profiting over the likenesses and numbers of college players.  The college players were being exploited so fat cat executives and fat cat school administrators could line their bank accounts.  This is a modern form of slavery.

The former players will be happy when they finally get compensated for EA using their likeness and numbers in their games.  If someone exploited you and did not compensate you, you would be very upset and want financial restitution.  If you say that you would not compensation, then you are a bald face liar.

I think the easy solution is a college football game with fake universities and fake names.  Then let people use Teambuilder to create their own teams.

That was done in the pre-Madden days of football video games.  Those games never took off.  Sports video games want to play as real players and real teams.  That is part of the fantasy of video games.  This idea would never sell to the public.

    Methinks not.

    Hooray!!! One person gets it.

The real tragedy of this is that the EA programmers, artists and testers who worked on the NCAA games will probably lose their jobs. Video game programmers and other video game creation personnel are worked to death to make ridiculous time lines, and they are not paid anywhere near the level of typical corporate IT personnel. They are promised profit sharing, and that does not always pan out if the game does not sell. EA one of the worst offenders in treating their personnel like dirt. However, video game programmers get into the industry because of their love of video games, so companies like EA will get them to "eat crap and gladly call it chocolate ice cream with sprinkles on top".

Do you even realize that the former NCAA players that are party to the class-action lawsuit will get next to nothing in terms of compensation? The only parties that make any money in class-action lawsuits are the attorneys. Talk about "fat cats" lining their pockets...

In essence, by your standard of exploitation, TV networks and merchandisers should also compensate the players for their so-called 'slavery'. After all, the NCAA is licensing and selling off their talents to separate entities; ergo exploiting them. If that's the case, just go ahead and say goodbye to college football too, because without TV rights and merchandise licensing, there's no money.

And slavery: what an absurd thing to say. People were FORCED into slavery. Nobody is forcing these guys to play college football out of high school. They make the CHOICE to play as amateurs, earn a degree, get their ass kissed during college, and have the potential opportunity to play in the NFL.

The likelihood of us beating Miami is very low considering how we've started the season. That said, they're also not as good as most think. A couple things to consider:

    1) Sure, they beat Florida, but the Gators really beat themselves with five turnovers and awful offense.

    2) Stephen Morris' injury may be a factor.

    3) This is this Miami team's first game in the spotlight. The pressure will be on to prove themselves.

    4) Conversely, there's no pressure on us. Everyone thinks we suck so we have nothing to lose.

    5) It's a noon kickoff which typically favors the home team.

    6) We've beaten them before. Yes, they weren't as good then as they are now and we were better then than we are now; but still, we've beaten them.

    7) They just came off a game where they annihilated an overmatched I-AA opponent. Many teams have a habit of a letdown after big romps.

    8) Miami seems to be overly confident, which may be their worst enemy.

To win, we've got to limit our mistakes (i.e., no more giving up touchdowns on offense) and force them into mistakes with our defense. I'm optimistic we'll give them a fight.

I love the "UF gave them the game" logic. Do you not realize that four of the five turnovers were forced? When Driskell gets his spine snapped by a D-lineman who beat his man, that's not "beating themselves".

As for the spotlight, I hardly consider a noon game against an 0-3 team the "spotlight".

And Al Golden is the antithesis of overconfident. Not sure where that line is coming from.

Yes, they were forced errors on behalf of the Gators.

As I just recently said replying to another post, the spotlight is on Miami because you just recently became ranked again. Regardless of what team you play, people will want to see if you are legitimate or not. Hence, the spotlight and pressure that accompanies it.

I have a lot of respect for Golden and I think he'll return Miami to its past success. I don't think he is personally overconfident. That said, Al Golden isn't playing on the field. A coach can only do so much to keep his players from getting too big-headed. A lot of these guys haven't seen this much hype in Coral Gables in years. Case-in-point: Jim Leavitt wasn't personally overconfident but nonetheless he always tried to quell our overconfidence in previous seasons after we became ranked from hot starts. In 2007, we beat Auburn and WVU and annihilated UCF. CJL tried his damndest to keep the team in line, but the players' overconfidence did us in during the middle of the season.

  5. Yeah, I'm pretty excited about the Dolphins too. They haven't looked great in any of the three games (and, frankly, we were lucky to win the Falcons game), but have found ways to beat two quality teams and also win two road games.

I agree with Bullphin in that the subpar running game is going to come back to bite us in some games. Hopefully it can improve against the Saints, even if they do have an improved D under Ryan. Even with our good start, the Dolphins aren't quite an elite team just yet. I think we're close and will be a playoff team, however.

On another note, what an awful starting schedule with three of the first four games being on the road and four out of five being tough games. If we finish the first five games at 4-1 before the bye week, that'd be great since the middle of the season will be seemingly easier.

  6.

CJL did great things while he was here, he achieved more than anyone could've reasonably expected. But he's gone. He's never going to coach USF again. Move on, let it go.

Too bad for many he's part of our history, a history some will try to remake.

Bush is gone and will never be our president again, but people still talk about him as if the Devil.  I am sure that when Obama departs the White House, assuming the 22nd amendment holds up, many will still talk about him and long for him to be in power still/again.

Roberto Clemente was #1, in my book, for making the Pirates great.  He died in '73, they still have a Roberto Clemente Day in Pittsburgh and his statue out front.

    91244932.o02ugHl4.IMG04554w.jpg

They still talk about the Great One decades after his demise.

Frank Kush at Arizona State experienced a situation with allegations far worse than Jim Leavitt, and, get this "Kush was fired over accusations he interfered with the case".  That's the "out" in many of these cases - because "interfering" can be so loosely defined.  Luckily for Kush, the player filed a case against him, like hightechbull thinks Miller should have done against Leavitt.  Kush won and was found not liable in the case.  Probably would have been better for USF had Miller and a court case decided it and not some shadowy employment lawyer doing the dirty work for a distant and flaccid AD.

Frank Kush is back on staff at Arizona State, has been for 15 or so years.  He's even had a "Frank Kush Day" and the football field is named after him.  He's enjoying life and the fans still love him and all that he accomplished for ASU.

ASU fans and administrators, much more maturely, understood what Kush meant to the program and how important that history was to them.  The team goes to the Camp Tontozona that Kush took them to and they still climb Mount Kush.

    8063193947_10c2f8872b_c.jpg

So, some suggest to "move on".  Critical error.  As I posted elsewhere, you don't just ignore a program's history, especially under the cloudiness and motivations of the Leavitt fiasco.  We all get that he won't coach here, but that's not the point.  People look to what he did for the program and he did more than any other individual in the history of the program, including Lee Roy Selmon, whom I deeply admired.  No one else is even close.

Until this is reconciled USF won't have a history or a future - at least that can be tied together, and a fan base that is still looking for some closure and a reason to come together.  Because of the mishandling of the fiasco, three years later there are still hard feelings on both sides.

Unfortunately, the only ones that can really do anything to negate the still lingering effects are the very few that were in power then, making it a very unlikely event.

For a program with no identity (or a lost identity) and missing the two largest leaders of the program - it does not bode well.

    Great post. Thanks for that.

Are we the worst team in college football? Well, a team that must be better than us if that is the case is FIU.. They just lost to Louisville by a score of 72-0... Saturday, October 26th may be a BAD BAD BAD day for USF football. Losing is one thing, but if we are anywhere close to 72-0, that is going to be hard to take in as we move to 0-7 and get beat down like this.

    You're an idiot.

Would you like to elaborate on that nice comment of yours? What about what I said makes me an idiot?

    #2 Worst FIU - http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-college-football-25-worst-teams-0920,0,4518732.photogallery?index=os-no-2-fiu-20130920

    #1 Worst USF - http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-college-football-25-worst-teams-0920,0,4518732.photogallery?index=os-no-1-usf-20130919

Looks like they rank us as worse than the team that just lost 72-0.

*Also, we lost to an FCS team this season for the first time, EVER. We are 0-3 after losing to FLORIDA ATLANTIC!

*SB Nation put us in the 9th of 10 conferences: (http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/9/17/4738850/conference-power-rankings)

"9. American - You might make an argument for moving them up just a little, since Louisville and UCF keep winning. However, USF lost at home to FAU. Temple became the third AAC team to lose to an FCS program this year, and SMU nearly became the fourth." Do you think this is because of Louisville and UCF? No. We are a huge part of that as it specifically mentions our failure.

*We are so bad our local news even asks the fans what they think about how bad we are:

I am not a troll. I am a 2012 University of South Florida graduate and a 3 year fan of USF athletics. Just pointing out that it's going to be a rough day for us on our home field on October 26th vs. this powerhouse.

There's little doubt we're near the bottom, but I disagree with dead last considering FIU and others.

I do find it amusing that you use a poll from a newspaper that has derided us for years (even when we were good) and is in the hometown of our supposed arch rivals.

They're loving every minute of our football program's state just like we did when UCF lost 17 in a row...

i am amazed at the athletic prowess of such a small school

It helps to be located in such a huge geographic area that produces so much great talent.

Also, don't forget, the University of Florida was very scared of the geographic might of SoFla back in the 1950s-1970s, they resisted legislative efforts to put a state university in that area.  At one point, UM was even considering affiliating with the state as a "State university" and we were blocked by UF.

FIU boosters will try to tell you that UM similarly tried to block them from becoming a state school, but it was more the UF guys.  There were a few UM guys who were perturbed about UF blocking us, and then the state doing an end-run and building a "new" state school in Miami, but those Gators really know how to protect their turf.  That's why FIU had to be "International" and FAU had to be "Atlantic" instead of, say, UF-Miami or UF-Palm Beach.

Now we just need to get an indoor practice facility (lots of lightning storms in SoFla, and it is apparently now on the Athletic Department's radar) and an on-campus stadium (still, for the most part, a dream, though we are secretly preparing for it with parking garages).

And it's in a great area of Miami.

The UF crowd has always been low-class when it comes to other schools in the state.

  10. I am disappointed with some of the sentiments on this board. They are reflective of my assertion that over the past 3-5 years we have had a new crop of members and visitors to this board who are fickle, regularly and unnecessarily negative and tangential, and do not often write things which are good reflections of our fan base.

Firstly, there is little reason to fire off at Miami fans. I went to USF for undergrad and to Miami for an MD and an MBA. Anybody who knows me knows that I am among the most diehard USF fans in existence. I wore USF gear on Miami's campus nearly every day. The back of my truck read "Cane for now, BULL forever." When our two teams played each other, I was in the front row of the USF section painted green and gold, and I rushed the field when we beat Miami and was only saved from citation because I was a Miami student (haha). Therefore, I mention my attendance at Miami only to note that I am qualified to pass opinion on their fan base and program, given they got 6 years of my time and tuition.

Miami has essentially been nothing but kind to us. Their former AD scheduled the series between our two teams when they had everything to lose and nothing to gain. I don't know about your experiences, but I thoroughly enjoyed our huge tailgates outside their stadium and found their fans for the most part to be decent. They have little poor to say about us, and in fact I tended to hear Miami students and fans praising how far and how fast USF had come up through the ranks. Yes, UM has a large contingent of the South Florida population which bandwagons on when their team is doing well. But guess what - the actual Miami fans don't like them either, and prefer to distance themselves from that element of those who follow their team. At the same token, those fans make up a lot of the reason that Miami still has a national draw, buy Canes gear, and keep the brand prominent. So, they don't like the rep, but they benefit from it, so they live with it.

At this point, firing off cliche rips at Miami and its fanbase is unnecessary, not classy, and at minimum lacks any creativity and/or credibility. It makes us look bad to folks who, for the most part, have been supportive or at worst non-maliciously dismissive of our program.

Secondly, this very board causes me annoyance with its willingness to throw rocks at bandwagon portions of other fanbases and simultaneously do the same. I deal with dying people every day, too. I work 6-7 days a week, long days, and USF sports are an outlet for pleasure for me as well. I'm not happy with Coach Taggart's debut on the field, and also honestly question whether he is a good leader or has enough experience to pull us out of this. But my support for the university, and therefore its sports programs, will not be swayed by 3 losses to start a year, or a stretch of losses over several years, or a decade of a terrible program (heaven forbid!). I am a little miffed that I increased my donor level this year and LITERALLY went broke to pay for my USF season tickets for football, my main outlet for temporary breaks from the real world, and the team is really making it difficult to feel we have a competitive chance during games. But jeez folks... it isn't just about wins and losses. USF fans are a community, and we stick together. When I travel, I wear Bulls gear, and I nearly always get a "Go Bulls!" from somebody, somewhere on every trip. We've had 3 awesome tailgates (yes, I hosted a 120-person tailgate at Michigan State, which I used one of my two weeks of vacation for the entire year to go to, and I work ALL HOLIDAYS). I go to games and I see the people I miss from college, and get together with folks I don't see otherwise. I play beerpong, talk football, hang out with my girlfriend, and still get a fun release. I have these to look forward to every game. When we play away games that I can't make, there's a watch party. The team is terrible and the games definitely aren't as fun to watch right now, but I wouldn't give up the rest of it on account of that. The idea that many of you are so negative about things is understandable, but the constant cheap shots, withdrawals of support, and uncalledfor lashing out at the leadership of the university which is suspiciously far more copious during losing streaks - it's all poorly reflective of your university, of this board, and ultimately of the inidividuals doing it. I am more embarrassed by the response on this board to tough times than I am of the team itself.

Suck it up. Continue to support your university. Discuss difficulties we're going through without the intense negativity and rash statements. Advice not necessarily reflective of this particular thread, but of the entire board, provoked finally by this thread. When writing things on this board, realize that this board is read by EVERYONE... players, recruits, media, Athletics staff, etc, etc. I know at least one recruit who was deterred from seriously considering USF because of the impression that this board gave him of our fanbase - likely not the norm, but a truth nonetheless. You all know Athletics employees read this board, some even post to it, and sometimes I wonder how they can draw motivation to serve fans when they read some of the things on here. Opposing fans read this board, and they aren't necessarily folks we care to cater to, it would still be nice if they leave with a positive impression of us, and the posts are often hypocritical considering we like to point out other fanbases' drawbacks. I'd just like to see if our board got back to its previous character which it had when I first started reading it circa 2003 - a community of folks who are brought together by a solid support for USF, with recognizable personalities but the vast majority of whom had an honest desire to discuss all things USF without putting their support in question and without writing things that reflected poorly on that support. It may never happen, but in the meantime, just keep calm, and GO BULLS. /end rant

Great post, Faza. I harbor similar sentiments, as I started at UM and then transferred to USF.
