My point was not necessarily to identify the Big10 but any power5 conference other than the Big12. However, Now that you mention it, I wonder, going foward how much the Big10 hangs onto their AAU policy. Nebraska is no longer a member and there are many schools in the AAC the Big10 would probably love to have that do not have that classification. The money that CFB is generating for P5 schools is hard cash, while AAU is more status and not necessarily a “direct” revenue gain. For example, USF is not AAU but it does not prevent them from making substantial money on the massive number of patients it has. AAU Recognizes this but is not the means to that end.

USF research is now up to $500,000,000/yr.

University Presidents, NOT AD's, ultimately decide which schools obtain membership into their Athletic conferences.

That amount of yearly research dollars has to factor into the equation for them.

That is more in research than many AAU schools.

USF has been making steady progress towards probable AAU future membership.

The fact that USF has now been recognized as one of only three "preeminent" Florida universities (along with UF and FSU) just illustrates that point. UCF lags well behind in that regard and that is something that should not be dismissed as being unimportant in whether one school gets chosen over another, by the conference Presidents.

I think Frost was a great motivator. We shall see if his support staff can sell the vision because I just don’t see Heupel as that guy

I'm a bit surprised that UCF has not had any additional commits since they won the national championship.

It seems that win had more of an impact on Frost recruiting for Nebraska. LOL

  3. Fennelly: 24th time the charm for USF women vs. UConn?

TAMPA — USF women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez has been to Pamplona, Spain, on vacation. Probably recruited some, too. Fernandez has been part of the big show in Pamplona — though not completely.

"Some of us had more fun than others," Fernandez said. "I was late for the bell for the run with the bulls."

    Not that it matters.

Fernandez and his team run with the Huskies.

"Two, three times a year," Fernandez said with a grin.

It's that time of year. The time of year when Geno Auriemma and the top-ranked and 11-time national champion UConn women come to Tampa for a game Saturday night. It's the time of year when USF dreams a little dream and fans flock to the Sun Dome on the off chance that history happens.

    It never does.

Fernandez has put together a great program at USF — solid, sturdy, dependable. Though unranked, the Bulls are 12-3 and have made four NCAA Tournament appearances in the past five seasons.

Fernandez points at the USF media guide, the series results against Connecticut.

    0-23.

The Big Blue Machine is in town.

The annual night of pain and suffering.

I never miss this game. What if USF won? It would be one of the great nights in Tampa Bay sports history. Think I want to be in the deli line at Publix when I find out USF finally beat UConn?

And don't think it's not doable. UConn is slipping. Why, the Huskies even lost last season, in the Final Four against Mississippi State. Granted, that snapped a record 111-game UConn win streak, and the Huskies are unbeaten this season.

"They've lost two games in five years," Fernandez said. "That's pretty good."

    Pretty good.

USF won 24 games last season. It also lost three games to UConn, including the title game at the American Athletic Conference tournament. The scores: 102-37, 96-68, 100-44.

"It's tough when you look up at the scoreboard and you're getting run out of the gym," Fernandez said. "It's embarrassing. It's not fun — and you're an NCAA Tournament team."

It's showtime Saturday night. The Big Blue Machine is in town. As usual, Fernandez recruited the globe to assemble his roster, which includes players from six countries, including junior guard Kitija "Kit" Laksa, from Riga, Latvia, who leads the Bulls in scoring at 21.5 points per game.

It's UConn against the world Saturday night.

"That's our plan, exactly," Laksa said with a smile. "That's how we recruit."

    She thought about UConn.

"They are the No. 1 team. You have to respect that. And we do respect that. But as I've mentioned before, if you want to be the best, you have to beat the best."

    Saturday night is the night.

    True, it never has been.

"Any time as a coach that you're competing against a program like Connecticut, one of the greatest teams in college basketball, and a legendary coach — that's Geno — that's what drives you every day," Fernandez said. "You want to compete against the best team in the country and coach against the best in the country."

Fernandez and Auriemma have struck up a friendship over the years. They laugh along.

"He wasn't very happy with the weather here," Fernandez said.

USF would love to give a truly a chilly reception. Fernandez can still remember the time USF took UConn to overtime at Connecticut before falling.

    It was 14 years ago.

"We haven't talked about them more than we've talked about Tulane and Cincinnati," Fernandez said. "We haven't brought them up. We've got a veteran team. They know who we're playing Saturday. If we have to remind them, we've got a major, major issue."

The Huskies can be beaten. Go ahead, administer a breathalyzer. I believe it. The Huskies can be beaten. USF needs to keep telling itself that.

Hey, UConn lost last season, right?

    Still …

"I'm sure that whole spring and summer, that loss, they were reminded of that loss that loss and it probably drove them the whole time, the same way that's driven our team since getting bounced out of the first game of the NCAA Tournament," Fernandez said.

Big Blue Machine fun fact: UConn is 72-0 in the AAC since the conference was formed.

"We always get a great crowd here," Fernandez said. "We have a lot of season-ticket holders who are Connecticut fans. They root for us, but for that one game, they switch over. Without a doubt, it's going to be a great atmosphere."

    What if USF wins?

It won't happen, but what if it does?

"I think I go home and open up and nice bottle of wine and a nice bottle of bourbon, celebrate for a little bit, but we've got to get Temple at Temple on Wednesday," Fernandez said.

"I want this place to be packed," Laksa said. "UConn gets a lot of attention, and every opponent they play as well. It's a chance to show what we've got."

    Ring the bell.

It's time for the running of the Huskies.

I know it’s not good, but what’s our record vs the conn in women’s b-ball?

"The Huskies are 23-0 all-time against USF in a series that dates back to the 2002-03 season. UConn’s overtime victory against the Bulls on December 1, 2004 marked the last time the Huskies won a game that went into extra time."

  5. Too bad Courtney has no more eligibility left. If she did, I'd like our chances a lot better. Even as great as she played against UConn, USF could not get the W.

Despite doing all that her team ended up losing.

Laksa had 36 against ND this year and we still lost by 10.

UConn doesn't often beat themselves. They have so much more fire power than their compeition that they can still win with just their B game against almost everybody.

  6. FYI, Syracuse is no longer an AAU member, as of May, 2011:

"The Chronicle of Higher Education reported Monday that SU pulled out of the AAU before it was kicked out. A review by an AAU committee was likely to show that Syracuse no longer met the group’s membership criteria, the Chronicle said. The publication said SU had dropped from 120th to 194th on a list of universities reporting the most federally financed research expenditures.

The AAU voted out the University of Nebraska-Lincoln earlier this month, because it did not meet the criteria."

The Oakland Raiders will sign Jon Gruden to one of the longest coaching deals in NFL history -- a 10-year contract likely approaching $100 million -- when it is made official Tuesday, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday.

  10. Instead of paying $200 million for a 40,000 seat OCS and still being stuck in the AAC, I have an idea:

We should first change our mascot to the original one selected - *The Buccaneer which was selected in 1962.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers only came into existence in 1974 and didn't start playing until 1976.

Next, we should change our school colors to Red and Black to match RayJay.

Then, we should take whatever millions it takes to bribe the Big 12 [or some other P5 conference] to become a member.

That will get our average attendance up to 50,000+ and we can rightfully call RayJay our own.

[The fact that an NFL team with a similar name and colors happens to play there as well should be of no concern, since they will draw less in actual attendance as reported by Greg Auman.]

*"...In the election, five finalists were selected: the Buccaneer, the Golden Brahman, the Olympian, the Cougar, and the Golden Eagle.

The Buccaneer, which received the most votes, was originally not adopted because it was believed that a junior college in Pensacola had the same mascot. The Golden Brahman, which had lost to the Buccaneer by only three votes, was chosen instead.

After it was learned that the junior college mascot was in fact the Pirate and not the Buccaneer, a 12-member judiciary committee decided that the Buccaneer would serve as the USF mascot.

With the decision came controversy. Many students were unhappy about the lackadaisical way in which the contest was run, while others thought that both choices were unfit to be the official mascot.

A petition was formulated and collected more signatures than the actual number of votes in the original election. A run-off election was granted between the Buccaneer and the Golden Brahman. The Golden Brahman was victorious and was officially unveiled Nov. 17, 1962..."

PS: In about 10 years of being in a P5 conference, we will have enough money to build a 50,000+ OCS and vote on another mascot and school colors, if we so choose.

    Problem solved. :backtotopic:

Pretty cool to start college as a freshman in what would have been the final few months of high school life. Gives those kids a little more time to adjust to college while still getting out for spring ball.

Gives them a real advantage to see the field earlier, than the players who enroll during the summer. They get a jump start on strength training at USF and to actually use the play book.

We have seen that CCS is not shy about playing true freshman, if he thinks they can contribute immediately.
