    Leavitt: Same offensive plan

By TIMES STAFF WRITERS and TIMES WIRES

    Published October 6, 2006

TAMPA - Even though Connecticut's defense is ranked No. 6 nationally against the pass and not ranked at all against the run, coach Jim Leavitt said he wasn't planning on running the ball more or passing any less during Saturday's game.

i wouldnt expect leavitt to make such an adjustment

    he never does

    1. The only reason uconn is ranked so high against the pass is that they get mauled on the ground.

    2. USF running game is not a strength right now.  In fact, it is a weakness.

So what's the call?  Mash your strength against theirs?  Or use your weakness against their weakness?  Good times.  Something will give, that's for sure.  Hope it's them.

  2. oh-- and traditional Greek houses (rarely used by anyone but Greeks) and on campus stadiums (used 6-8 times a year for football itself). Yeah I know-- we have Greek Housing provided by the school-- but it really doesn't look like the typical plantation style you see at old ass schools.

Don't get me wrong-- it's a nice setup if you are trying to flee the parents and be independent. It's also nice in terms of an overall atmosphere (no competing with the other pro sports teams in town for attention) and being able to stroll around a huge campus. I don't need to walk around a campus all that much to feel like I'm at school. That's me though. And from what I've seen, USF has definitely improved that walk-around feel to the school far beyond what it was during the mid eighties to early nineties. Most people wouldn't even recognize MLK plaza anymore.

I like USF, but if there's one thing that bothers me it's walking to class from across fletcher.  Of course, I had to be a business major, making that walk about as far as possible.

I went to Miami before USF, and it was nice to wake up 10 minutes before class and still make it.  Perhaps the only thing I can think of that I liked better about Miami!

  3. That's true.  When they succeed, they get all kinds of praise.  When they run into a team that can beat their offensive scheme, it's just a fluke ::).

Unless, of course, the pundits wish to argue that we have one of the most talented teams in the country.  Somehow I doubt it.  That's one thing among many that bothers me about the media.

At least Garrett Wolfe got bumped up to 2nd in the heisman list.  He's no Barry Sanders, but if he matches Barry Sanders' stats in college, he deserves the heisman (he's currently on pace to break 2800 yards!  While I doubt he'll hit that, he'll get over 2000 easily if he stays healthy).

  4. it's looking like they weren't taking this game very seriously

I'm fearing the worst case scenario-- a Sun Belt team beating one of our best BE teams. yeesh-- can you hear the idiots at ESPN starting to talk about ho wthe Big East doesn't belong in the BCS all over again?

    c'mon Cards--- kick some ass!

Until the ACC has a winning rec vs the BE, i don't think it matters a great deal.  The big 12 has a 1-aa loss.  Ha.

  5. If UM, FSU, USF, and UCF all played each other 10 times this season, not a singe school would sweep any series.

UM and FSU are still ahead of USF.  USF is still ahead of UCF.

UM and FSU lost a chunk of that lead though.  Neither can afford to sit like this too long, it WILL affect their recruiting vs us.  The jarbled garbage competition between them, us, and UCF might let florida get away for a few years.  That notion greatly irks me, so I hope leavitt steps it up even a notch further.

  6. Based on this it looks like UCONN has a good pass defense. Is this a product of their schedule or are they really that solid? Looks like Navy had their way with them. How do we match up with this team I haven't really seen any UCONN games this year?

UConn has been playing running teams like navy and wake and losing to them iirc.  That's a great way to make your pass defense look "good".  Why would a team throw the ball when it can run effectively with a 14+ point lead?

  7. This school has definitely gotten away from commuter status.  More younger students go here than when I first showed up, and more and more live nearby.  The only thing that could even remotely make USF a commuter school now is the existence of 4 campuses, and the fact that you need to attend more than 1 to get all the upper levels you need sometimes.

  8. From the NCAA rule book:

    ARTICLE 3. Achop block is:

    a. An obviously delayed block at the thigh or below against an opponent

(except the runner) who is in contact with a teammate of the blocker, is

in the act of disengaging from the first blocker or has just disengaged

from the first blocker but is still confronting him. When in question, the

contact is at the thigh or below (A.R. 2-3-3-I and II).

    b. A high-low, low-high or low-low combination block by two nonadjacent

linemen with or without a delay between contacts occurring in the

    neutral zone.

    c. A high-low, low-high or low-low combination block by any two offensive

players with or without a delay between contacts when the initial contact clearly occurs beyond the neutral zone (i.e., all involved players

are beyond the neutral zone) (A.R. 2-3-3-III and IV).

In other words, you can't hit a defender low while he's engaged with someone, and you can't high/low him with a teammate (it's a shame doing this puts people at risk, because it is REALLY fun to high/low someone.  If it didn't risk injuring them i'd have done it constantly).  This is a rare call.  The block below the waist outside of the tacklebox is more common isn't it?  I was fairly certain they were 2 different things.

  9. On a side note, Garrett Wolfe already has 1100 rushing yards for the season in only 5 games.  That's gangsta.

If he stays on pace, the only back that will have better college rushing stats is BARRY SANDERS!

Note: he had 171 rush yards and something like 60 rec even against ohio state.  Where does NIU get these guys?  First Michael Turner and now Wolfe!

  10. I saw the field... well... while on te field.

IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!  The iconic U was gone by halftime... and the Bucs flag came back.  Not to mention the darn sod I triped on.

Anyway... BTW... we should paint the flag gold... why the white flag of surreder?

It goes pretty well with MkeG's idea (note, no / you here) actually.  Putting the opponents logo on the field and then stomping on it would just be...um...classy.  Either way, I'm certain the media would be all over it.  We'd be on sports talk from here to washington state.

  11. There are times to sit down at a game.  Timeouts, halftime, and when the bulls are up by 50 points are all good examples.

I'm not very impressed with the HCS at games either.  They give me too many evil eyes.  If I still drank, and I could afford the a$$ raping that is purchasing beer in the stadium, I might be tempted to taunt them about tasers.  Fortunately, neither of those occur, and I leave the games peacefully at the end.

  12. I really didnt feel like pushing it because of the state of the team.  However, the prescence of a big, red button like that at the top of the board just screams at me.  I was very tempted to click on it 1000 times within 10 minutes, but decided not to.  Doing that would only be cool if the mods kept track, and based on the link that appears at the bottom when you put the cursor over it, it just plays a song.

  13. Everyone wants to be like /you

    8-)

That's incorrect.  What you actually meant is that everyone wants to be like USFPDiddy.  That other clown has no chance in hell at intelligent arguments.  I mean, what kind of loser would actually want Rod Smith to be head coach?  Maybe /you , but certainly not me.
