  1. USF Women Basketball Standout Jessica Dickson Named To Naismith Award Midseason Top 30 List

Tampa, FL (February 16, 2006) – University of South Florida women’s basketball standout Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) is one of seven players from the BIG EAST Conference named as part of the top 30 mid-season candidates for the Naismith Trophy Women's College Player of the Year. The Naismith Trophy is given annually to the men's and women's college players of the year and is one of the most prestigious national awards in college basketball.

Dickson is joined on the list by fellow BIG EAST members Charde Houston, Ann Strother and Barbara Turner of Connecticut, Notre Dame’s Megan Duffy, Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter and DePaul’s Khara Smith.

Currently the nation’s leading scorer, Dickson is averaging 22.7 points per game while helping the Bulls to a 17-9 overall record and a 7-6 slate in the BIG EAST Conference. On the year she is shooting 43.2 percent (208-482) from the field and an impressive 87.4 percent (118-135) from the free throw line.

Dickson has tallied 16 20-point games and six games of 30 points or more. She established a career high of 37 points against No. 10/9 Rutgers on Jan. 11, and recorded 35 points twice against No. 11/13 DePaul on Dec. 7 and North Florida on Dec. 28. Her 590 total points this season is a school single season record.

In addition, Dickson is grabbing six rebounds per game which is third on the team, and is third in blocked shots with 14.

For her career – through the Bulls win over Marquette on Thursday night – Dickson has recorded 1,663 points which is second all-time at USF. She is just 158 points from surpassing former Bulls Wanda Guyton as the schools all-time leading scorer.

USF will be back in action on Tuesday, February 21 when it faces Louisville in a key BIG EAST Conference match at Freedom Hall. The game will be televised live on College Sports Television (Dish Network channel 152 and Direct TV channel 610) at 7:30 p.m. In addition it can be heard live in the Tampa Bay area on WTBN-AM 570 & 910 with Tom Krasniqi handling the play-by-play or via the internet by logging onto www.GoUSFBulls.com.

  2. This is not gonna hurt at all! when they talked about this kid only stats they gave on him was one breakout game. that means he did nothin else outside of that game! I have heard as well from some High school football coaches that he isnt that great of a rb so doesnt surprise me he might change positions! Smazza glad this gives you somethin else to whine and complain about:) GO BULLS!

  3. Normally I am one to speak out against bringing a guy in like this with his rep. But I really think if we can reel this guy in it is worth it! This kid is a Gamebreaker when it comes to receivers. Tall, Athletic, Awesome speed. And I would be willing to give this one another chance. Major issue at fsu was lack of playing time and not many plays for him. Those would be solved with us this guy would come in and play right away and if we had a qb in place he will get passes! I know some are gonna disagree with this post, but I gotta feeling that this is one of few you give another chance! Go BULLS!

  4. Mccullum is a keeper quit this talk! When you have no depth and you gotta play these guys alot minutes this is  gonna happen players are drained physically tend to make mental mistakes more often! This season is a pass lets keep this chatter off! As much as I applawd the effort by Capko with him in we wont many games especially down the stretch his pace of the game and confidence is really hurting this team!

  6. Now your jumpin to conclusions! I do think Coker should be held accountable! Yea your right werner can go into a household and say he has been around them but what does that do. He can also say how he had all that talent around him and couldn't get them to be a productive offense! I think coker should be held accountableso dont jump to conclusions about what I think. As a USF fan i think alot of people on this board jump to fast when they hear a big program fires coordinators and say lets hire him quickly! When i brought up being a fan of UM I said that because I saw him coach the offense and do nothing with so much talent! So to me we dont need that because we have talent but not yet to UM's talent on offense.

I think we need to find a younger coordinator from a smaller DI schoo1 that has had alot of success and give him an opportunity. Unless we can get a good coordinator from a big program that isnt awful like werner!

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Jesus Verdejo, one of the nation's top prep players at Miami Christian in 2002, is transferring from Arizona to the University of South Florida.

A 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard, Verdejo will become eligible in December and have 2 1/2 years of eligibility at USF.

"It's been two years on the bench watching people play," Verdejo said. "I can't wait to get on the court. I'm ready to take USF's program to another level. I want to show people what I can do."

As a freshman at Arizona last season, Verdejo played 26 games, averaging 2.3 points. He was to be redshirted at Arizona this season before deciding to leave.

"Jesus can score with anyone," Arizona coach Lute Olson said before the season. "He just needs to work on the transition from offense to defense."

At Miami Christian, Verdejo averaged 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists as a senior, finishing as the school's all-time leading scorer. After Miami Christian, Verdejo played in 2003 at The Winchendon (Mass.) School, averaging 22.9 points at the prep school.

"I considered South Florida out of high school, but this time there was a whole different staff," Verdejo said. "I'm really impressed with Coach [Robert] McCullum and [assistant] Coach [Greg] Gary."

"Choosing USF was more of a trust issue," said Art Alvarez, Verdejo's coach at Miami Christian. "It's one thing to want him, but they needed him. It's a real good situation for Jesus."

  9. WHY  ???

Because he had all the weapons in the world at Miami and did absolutely nothing trust me on this on bulls fans! Whats he gonna do here with less better cmon give me a break. Just cuz he was fired from UM doesnt mean he would save things here. Im a UM fan when not playing Bulls because I grew up down there and my dad has season tickets since I was 4. I watched most games and he is awful with playcalling didnt know how to use all the talent thats why! So stop making all this noise about werner would be like keeping Rod smith!

    Go BULLS!
