  1. McCain Threatens MLB Over Steroids Saturday, December 04, 2004 WASHINGTON  Sen. John McCain (search) on Saturday demanded immediate action by representatives of major league baseball's players and owners to tighten the sport's drug-testing policy "to restore the integrity of baseball" or face possible congressional action. "I warned them a long time ago that we needed to fix this problem," McCain told reporters after attending the Army-Navy football game with President Bush. "It's time for them to sit down together and act. And that's what they should do. If not, clearly, we have to act legislatively, which we don't want to do." Expressing dismay over recurring reports of steroid abuse by some of the game's top stars, the Arizona senator threatened to legislate stricter rules if the sport fails to police itself. "I'll introduce legislation in January, but I hope I don't have to do that," he said, speaking to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base. The long-simmering steroid allegations hit the headlines this week with reports of grand jury testimony in San Francisco that linked to steroid abuse such stars as the game's all-time single-season home run champion, Barry Bonds (search), and New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi (search). The San Francisco Chronicle was able to review sealed transcripts containing the testimony of Bonds, Giambi and Gary Sheffield.
  2. As far as Shef goes I am on the fence.....I need to hear more.....Giambi  on the other hand should have his contract voided and he should be terminated...... ::goodbye:: ÂÂ
  3. Notre Dame Fires Coach Willingham Tuesday, November 30, 2004 SOUTH BEND, Ind.  Coach Tyrone Willingham (search) was fired by Notre Dame (search) on Tuesday after three seasons in which he failed to return one of the nation's most storied football programs to prominence. Willingham had a record of 21-15, including 6-5 this season. The Fighting Irish lost 41-10 to No. 1 Southern California on Saturday. It was not immediately clear whether Willingham would coach the team at the Insight Bowl (search) on Dec. 28. Notre Dame accepted the invitation to the game on Sunday. Athletic director Kevin White scheduled a news conference for later Tuesday. Willingham's firing comes after a season that saw the Irish pull off upset victories over Michigan and Tennessee, but also suffer blowout defeats to USC and Purdue. Notre Dame's 41-10 loss to top-ranked USC on Saturday marked the fifth time the Irish lost by 31 points or more in three years under Willingham. By comparison, former coach Bob Davie's team had just one such loss. Lou Holtz and Dan Devine had none. The firing of Willingham was unexpected as Notre Dame as no recent coach was forced out in less than five seasons, the time during which Gerry Faust and Davie held the job. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,140034,00.html
  4. That might be the three hardest words I have ever typed................
  5. Suprise!!! I am willing to wait and see what happens down the road. On the other hand I am sure this is enough for the Barry bashers.......
  6. SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds' personal trainer says in a secretly recorded conversation that the record-breaking slugger used an undetectable performance-enhancing drug during the 2003 season, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. In an article published Saturday, the Chronicle reports that Greg Anderson, Bonds' boyhood friend and a defendant in the BALCO steroids conspiracy case, provided Bonds with steroids that could be taken the day of a test and still not be detected. The Chronicle reports that it received the recording from a source familiar with Anderson who asked not to be indentified, and that two people who know Anderson listened to the tapes and said the voice is his. The paper does not identify the other voices on the recording or report who made the recording and the circumstances under which it was made. Anderson's attorney, J. Tony Serra, said Friday that Anderson "categorically denies" providing Bonds with illegal substances. After listening to portions of the recording, Serra said he couldn't identify the voice as Anderson's. Bonds' attorney, Michael Rains, said "this is as simply another below-the-belt bash of Barry Bonds, which as I understand it is supposedly the product of what has to be an illegally recorded telephone conversation supposedly between Greg Anderson and an anonymous criminal." Asked for comment Friday by the Chronicle about Bonds' alleged use of banned drugs, Rob Manfred, a Major League Baseball executive vice president, said, "... Whether or not he was using an undetectable performance-enhancing substance, I and the commissioner will have no comment." In the recording, the person said to be Anderson says that not only is the substance provided Bonds undetectable, but that through contacts in the testing labs, he would know when Bonds was going to be tested, a claim that Manfred refuted. During the 9-minute, 19-second recording, there are background conversations that can't be made out, and some of Anderson's comments are not audible, according to the Chronicle. However, the newspaper reports that many of Anderson's comments make it clear that the subject of the conversation is Bonds. Bonds has also been a subject of interest to federal investigators probing the BALCO lab in Burlingame, Calif., and international sports-doping, the Chronicle notes. On the recording, Anderson indicates that the drug he was giving Bonds was the same as the drug being used by unnamed Olympians who had passed multiple drug tests. Anderson, BALCO founder Victor Conte and two other men were indicted in February on steroid conspiracy charges for allegedly distributing drugs that included a supposedly undetectable steroid called "the clear" to stars of baseball, the National Football League and Olympic track and field. They have pleaded not guilty. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1903019
  7. The two most publicized are the Red Sox and Cubs the others are White Sox, Indians and Giants?
  8. Is Pedro fishing for pinstripes? September 26, 2004 Through a mutual friend, Pedro Martinez sent this message to Felix Heredia last weekend: Next year, when I'm a Yankee, you've got to give me your uniform number (45). So we're reminded that as tense as things are between the Yankees and Red Sox right now, with an American League Championship Series rematch coming our way in three weeks, this offseason is destined to raise the stakes. Are you ready for a tug-of-war over the rivalry's most contentious figure? Pedro indeed is headed for the free-agent market, and the savvy righthander knows what he must do in order to get the best deal. He must pit George Steinbrenner against John Henry and Larry Lucchino, instilling fear in Red Sox Nation that he would actually leave them to join the Evil Empire. That's why Martinez, who has been complaining about the upcoming end of his contract for a couple of years now, previously has mentioned the possibility of putting on pinstripes. He also has joked around with fans at Yankee Stadium and even attempted to make nice with some Yankees. Within this big tug-of-war, no doubt, will be smaller battles, fought within each camp. The Red Sox, who discussed a two-year extension (for about $25 million) with Martinez earlier this season, will have to decide how much is too much for a guy who has had so many arm problems. Boston management discussed insurance issues earlier with Pedro and that just ticked him off, as did their (understandable) offer of a pay cut from his current $17.5 million. The Yankees, in need of an ace, know Pedro will be the best of the free-agent crop. But they worry about the impact he could have in the clubhouse, where he has few admirers and many enemies, starting with Jorge Posada, who would be his catcher. Friends of Martinez believe that he wants to return to Boston, and that his engaging of the Yankees is only strategic. If so, it's good strategy. Looking past what should be a great October, it might be just as thrilling in November and December.
  9. He has the talent.....but does he have the heart and conviction anymore? I am willing to go out on a limb.................. and say he won't be pitching in the 8th inning next encounter. ;D
  10. You know George will be the first in line.........even if it is just to spite the Sox. I must say I was shocked to hear Pedro make those comments..........If Boston did not have Captain Curt the city would be in a panic right now.
  11. Red Sox fans must cringe reading these Pedro quotes................
  12. The rivalry wouldn’t be any fun if the Sox fans did that. ;D
