  2. "Who is Kittle? How long did he play? He played in our league?" Bonds said, lying on a clubhouse couch before Thursday's game against the Royals. "Ha! Do you guys believe that? ... Do you guys know my life history a little bit? ... One, you insult my children, who are half-white. "I was married to a woman who was white, so let's get real. I don't even know the guy. Tell him he's an ... idiot. Somebody said he wanted a piece of me. Tell him I'm at 24 Willie Mays Plaza and he can come get me anytime he wants to -- with pleasure. Don't insult my family."

  10. Derek Jeter Strikes Out Thursday, May 26, 2005 New York's Derek Jeter is going to prison. Not the Derek Jeter (search) who plays baseball in the Bronx, but the other Derek Jeter  the one who lives in Brooklyn and was convicted Wednesday of selling a machine gun to an undercover FBI agent. This Jeter, at age 23 seven years younger than the Yankees shortstop and team captain, tells the New York Post he's used to the confusion. "I like him. I'm a Yankees fan," said the cheerful defendant before his conviction. Jeter was being retried after an earlier court proceeding ended in a mistrial. Unfortunately, his luck struck out  the jury took only two hours to find him guilty of possessing and transporting a semiautomatic weapon while on parole. "It's a biased system," said his father  Eric Jeter. "They shouldn't have been able to try him again."

  14. Glazer launches takeover bid of Manchester United By STEPHEN WADE, AP Sports Writer May 12, 2005 LONDON (AP) -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers owner Malcolm Glazer began a $1.47 billion takeover bid of Manchester United on Thursday, raising his stake to nearly 57 percent of the world's richest soccer team. He bought the 28.7 percent share held by Irish racehorse owners J.P. McManus and John Magnier. He previously owned 28.1 percent of the club. Glazer needs more than 75 percent of the shares to take complete control, and he will now make an offer for the remaining shares. His company, Red Football, said he would pay $5.58 a share to acquire the Irishmen's stake. Thursday's move came two weeks after the Manchester United board said it would not recommend Glazer's takeover proposals to investors because his business plan appeared ``aggressive.'' Glazer had been given a May 17 deadline to submit a plan or withdraw his attempts to buy the team. His first two proposals were rejected by the board, which said the package relied too heavily on borrowed money. ``The board awaits the formal terms of the Red Offer and a further announcement will be made once the board has reviewed that announcement,'' the club said. Financial analysts said Glazer seemed certain to succeed in buying the team. ``The stake held by the Irishmen was always going to be the key to the bid,'' said Roy Kaitcer of Manchester stockbrokers Brewin Dolphin Securities. ``He obviously has a great platform to start his bid. ``Once other shareholders see what has happened, they will say they better take that as well. It looks like Mr. Glazer is on his way to owning Manchester United.'' There is strong opposition from the fan group Shareholders United, which fears Glazer will raise ticket prices and sell 67,000-seat Old Trafford stadium. ``I'm giving up my season ticket,'' Shareholders United president Nick Towle said. ``I'm not putting a penny of my money into this guy's pocket.'' ``I'm very sad,'' he added. ``It's a really sad day for Manchester United, for the supporters, for the whole club and I think it's a sad day for football in general.'' Shareholders United represents 17 percent of the club's stockholders, a number estimated at 20,000. Towle said at least half -- and maybe all -- would give up their tickets and stop attending games. He said Shareholders United still hoped to block Glazer from reaching the 75 percent level. ``If we can get to that 25 percent of the remaining shareholders, that would be great,'' Towle said. ``But it's looking like an uphill battle for us.'' Manchester United dominated English soccer for more than a decade, winning eight titles in 11 seasons and four FA Cups in 10. But the Red Devils are now only third in the Premier League for the third time in four years. With a game left, Manchester United is 20 points behind champion Chelsea and six behind runner-up Arsenal. Glazer's move came just before Man United's May 21 FA Cup final against Arsenal, its only chance for a trophy this season. http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylc=X3oDMTBpYnF0a2UxBF9TAzk1ODYzNTkwBHNlYwN0bQ--?slug=ap-manunited-glazer&prov=ap&type=lgns

  18. I can't wait for the next time these teams matchup!  ;D Pinella 'lost a lot of respect' for Schilling after comments TORONTO-- A day after Boston pitcher Curt Schilling used the word "idiot" in criticizing Lou Piniella, the Tampa Bay manager held a team meeting and fired back. The Red Sox and Devil Rays tangled Sunday, with two-bench clearing scuffles and six ejections. The teams have had trouble in the past, too. "The problem is when you're playing a team with a manager who somehow forgot how the game is played, there's problems," Schilling said on a Boston radio station Tuesday. "This should have been over a little bit ago. Lou's trying to make his team be a bunch of tough guys, and the telling sign is when the players on that team are saying, 'This is why we lose 100 games a year, because this idiot makes us do stuff like this.' They [Rays players] said that on the field." Piniella called a team meeting before Wednesday night's game at Toronto and issued a statement ripping Schilling. "Forget how the game is played? I have forgotten more baseball than this guy knows," Piniella said. "On the idiot subject, I'm appalled he would actually say something like that. I had a meeting with my team and to a man they denied it. He's questioning my character and integrity and that is wrong. He's never played for me, never really spoken to me, so he really doesn't know what I stand for. "If I were Curt, I would be really embarrassed at the cheap shot he took and get the story correct. I'll tell you I've always admired his pitching ability and competitiveness, but I can honestly tell you I've lost a lot of respect for him. I'm looking forward to talking to Curt myself and get this matter cleared up," he said. Piniella later said he had Tampa Bay's traveling secretary call Boston's traveling secretary to try to get a hold of Schilling. Piniella said had yet to hear from Schilling before the Devil Rays-Blue Jays game. "I was told Curt was going to call," Piniella said. "I'll he happy to pick up the phone if that's what it takes." Boston's game against Baltimore was rained out Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Red Sox said Schilling will miss at least two weeks with a bone bruise on his surgically repaired right ankle. Schilling hurt himself while pitching Saturday at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Piniella and Devil Rays pitchers Lance Carter and Dewon Brazelton were ejected Sunday, as were Boston manager Terry Francona, starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo and outfielder Trot Nixon. The ejections in the seventh inning followed a sequence of inside pitches and the two scuffles. The teams have a history of games involving beanballs, including a fight between Pedro Martinez and Gerald Williams on Aug. 29, 2000. Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir and Piniella were ejected from a game last September after Kazmir hit Manny Ramirez and Kevin Millar in a span of four pitches. That came one inning after Arroyo hit two batters. Piniella disputed Schilling's claims in the statement. "He talks about making our players tough guys. Well, we do that quite well here but we don't do it by advocating fighting or throwing at opposing hitters. I don't know how many meetings I have had with my pitching coach on this subject," Piniella said. "The problem is, Curt has a short memory. He doesn't remember when he was a young pitcher. We have a lot of young pitchers here and they're trying to learn to pitch at the big league level. Our kids are learning to pitch inside and they have to do that to survive up here. Nobody here wants anyone hit, believe me," he said. After Tampa Bay's game against Toronto, Piniella went off on a TV reporter when he was asked about his dispute with Schilling. Asked if Tampa Bay's recent beanings are a reflection on him, Piniella said sternly: "Why is it going to reflect on me? I don't throw the balls. I don't throw them, I don't throw them and I don't order people getting hit, so it's not going to reflect on me."
