  1. After today's second round USF and Miami are tied for second place with Rollins leading Tomorrow is the last round. http://gobulls.usf.edu/Sports/News.asp?i=626&s=Golf
  2. There is no mention whether DeAndrew played in the game today. Maybe it's better that way since his team got trounced: Dynamic duo leads Galaxy romp -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 3, 2004 NFL Europe Amsterdam Admirals 11 Frankfurt Galaxy 34 Waldstadion, Frankfurt, Germany. Attendance: 21,269 Skip Hicks helped power the Frankfurt Galaxy to an impressive Week 1 victory. photo: photo-stock.co.uk Running backs Leonard Henry and Skip Hicks powered the defending World Bowl champion Frankfurt Galaxy to a one-sided opening night defeat of the Amsterdam Admirals, combining for 267 total yards and each finding the end zone. Henry, of the Miami Dolphins, rushed for 114 yards and added 3 receptions for 60 yards, while Hicks, of the Cincinnati Bengals, gained 86 yards on the ground and caught 1 pass for 7 yards. Hicks scored on a 56-yard sprint, while Henry found the end zone on runs of 8 and 25 yards. Also impressing for the Galaxy was quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan (New Orleans Saints) and a defense that intercepted Admirals quarterbacks four times, forced and recovered two fumbles and kept Amsterdam out of the end zone until the game's final two minutes. O'Sullivan completed 10 of 16 passes for 148 yards, 1 touchdown and 113.5 quarterback rating in an efficient display under center. Both teams started the 2004 season with turnovers on their opening drives of the year. Frankfurt moved into scoring range first but wide receiver Jason Willis fumbled at the Amsterdam 15 after catching a pass from O'Sullivan and linebacker Drew Wahlroos recovered for the Admirals. Amsterdam handed the ball back to Frankfurt when Clint Stoerner was intercepted by Galaxy safety Ricky Sharpe, who returned the ball from his own 32 to the Amsterdam 45-yard line. The home team was unable to take advantage of good field position and punted back to the Admirals. Houston Texans wide receiver Chris Taylor got the Admirals on the move towards the end of the first period when he gained 18 yards on a reverse and caught passes of 24 and 9 yards from Stoerner. The former Claymores quarterback also hit tight end Tony Donald for a 10-yard gain but the drive stalled at the Frankfurt 22 and Todd Sievers came in to give Amsterdam a 3-0 lead with 10 seconds to play in the quarter with a successful 39-yard field goal attempt. Frankfurt's response was emphatic as NFL veteran Hicks proved his class by romping 56 yards around left end for a touchdown less than a minute into the second period. German kicker Ralf Kleinmann added the conversion. Jason McWilliams intercepts Admirals quarterback Clint Stoerner. photo: photo-stock.co.uk After linebacker Jason McWilliams intercepted Stoerner in Frankfurt territory, the Galaxy extended its lead with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter when Henry skipped outside to score on an 8-yard run. On the 11-play scoring drive which began at Frankfurt's own 32, the Galaxy kept the ball on the ground on every play, with the effective Hicks and Henry splitting the workload in the backfield. Stoerner and the Admirals continued to misfire offensively in the first half as the Miami Dolphins-allocated quarterback was picked off for a third time by Cleveland Browns linebacker Mason Unck. That allowed the Galaxy to add to their lead through Jamie Rheem's 40-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in the half. Frankfurt went 24-3 ahead early in the third quarter as Hicks and Henry continued to power the offense. Henry gained 29 yards on a screen pass from O'Sullivan while Hicks caught a 7-yard pass and added a 4-yard run. The drive was capped in impressive fashion when O'Sullivan lofted a 23-yard pass into the end zone for New Orleans Saints allocated wideout Derrick Lewis. Kleinmann added the conversion. Washington Redskins-allocated passer Gibran Hamdan sparked the Admirals offensively in the third period, but after leading them into scoring range with completions of 13, 10 and 9 yards, he was intercepted in the end zone by Galaxy cornerback Lynaris Elpheage. Kleinmann gave Frankfurt a 27-3 lead with 8:26 left in the game when he split the uprights on a 42-yard field goal attempt. Henry capped an outstanding display late in the fourth quarter when he completed the Galaxy scoring on a 25-yard run through the heart of a down-hearted Admirals defense. There was some consolation for the visitors when Stoerner fired a 19-yard touchdown pass to Donald with 1:51 remaining and then added a two-point conversion pass to eligible offensive lineman Tyler Lenda. Victory meant the Galaxy tied the all-time record for franchise wins in NFL Europe League history with 59, drawing level with the Barcelona Dragons. Frankfurt also improved its wins on opening day to a league-high nine. *** Evidently DeAndrew is being shown around Amsterdam by Derek Combs: Derek Combs: NFL Europe Diary posted 04/02/2004 Derek Combs Much like some of the fans in the stands, when NFL Europe kicks off its 2004 season this weekend, most of the players won't know quite what to expect. Moving into its 12th year, NFL-E has been as much about developing interest in American football overseas as it has been about young NFL players developing their skills. And for most American players, the sight of soccer-like festivities at a football game is something a little different. But not for Green Bay Packers cornerback Derek Combs, who is about to embark upon his second tour of duty in NFL-E, back with the Amsterdam Admirals, the same team for which he played in the spring of 2002. Then with the Oakland Raiders, it was in Europe where Combs initially began his conversion from running back, his collegiate position at Ohio State, to cornerback. Acquired by the Packers April 24, 2002, Combs was primarily a special teams contributor in 2003, making five tackles. Back in NFL-E, Combs is scheduled to start at cornerback in the Admirals' season-opening game against the defending-champion Frankfurt Galaxy, and should see opportunities to return punts at some point during the season as well. What follows is the first installment of Combs' exclusive NFL Europe Diary: Derek Combs: It was a long flight over to Europe from Orlando, but once we arrived in Amsterdam there were a few fans out to welcome us. That was nice to see. This is my second time in NFL Europe and my second time playing for Amsterdam, and it's a great environment to play football. It's like being in college again, actually, because the stadiums are smaller and the fans get into it and everybody seems like they just go out there and have fun. The last time I was here was when I was with the Oakland Raiders. When I left, I didn't think I'd ever be back in NFL-E, but it was a great experience for me, so when I was offered the chance to go back I jumped at it. This is only my third season trying to play cornerback and I need the experience. Plus, it's nice to change things up and visit a new place once in a while. That I'm back playing for the Admirals is kind of a coincidence. When I agreed to come to NFL-E again, I didn't get to pick my team. But a lot of the coaches are the same from when I was here the first time, and they liked me then, so I had a feeling they might try to bring me back. More than anything, I think my first experience here helped me on special teams. I didn't really play special teams in college, so having that on-field experience was really valuable for what I was able to do last year. The nice thing about being back is that I kind of know what to expect. It's also fun just being around the guys. I've spent some time hanging out with Steve Josue, Tony Donald and DeAndrew Rubin (who was on the Packers' roster in training camp last year), but I know a bunch of other guys on the team, too, from college or around the league. I've helped show some of the guys around town a little bit since we've gotten here -- restaurants or clubs that I remember from the first time I came over -- but it's not really that much of an adjustment from being home in America other than the obvious language differences. The food takes some getting used to, too, but other than that it's not too bad. I'm really excited to get out on the field again and start focusing in on playing corner and seeing what I can do. We go to Frankfurt this weekend to play the Galaxy and that's probably the best environment here to play a football game. There are a lot of American military bases in the area, so there are more American fans there than at other games. The crowd at Frankfurt really understands what's going on, and there will probably be about 50,000 fans there this weekend. It's going to be crazy loud. They play horns, blow on whistles, play all sorts of music. It's really intense, but that helps get you hyped up to play football, so it's good for us. Once the game starts you kind of tune out that noise. Here in Amsterdam we used to get about 10,000 fans per game, and they get pretty loud too, but I've heard that the crowds are a little bigger now. This league has grown up a bit since the last time I was here, and that's cool to see. I'm just excited to be here. I think we have a good team and we're just going to go out there and perform to the best of our ability and try to get our team to the World Bowl, just like everybody else. Right now, that's what I'm after. The Amsterdam Admirals-Frankfurt Galaxy game will be carried live on DirecTV, Saturday at 11 a.m. CT. NFL Network will have a delayed broadcast of the game at 7 p.m. CT. Derek Combs' NFL Europe diary will continue throughout the season.
  3. Not really. Sounds more like it's up to the coaches rather than a hard and fast rule.
  4. USF needs DePaul to lose a game this weekend, so they can regain their rightful place on top of C-USA. Louisville is still tied with USF for second place having won both ends of their DH with ECU. Edit: DePaul split their Double header with Houston. USF and Louisville are now tied for first place at 9-2. DePaul falls to 6-2.
  5. The ladies didn't need Ellis in the second game. USF won 7-2. Urbanik got the win and Cash pitched two innings of perfect relief. They combined for nine strikeouts.
  6. From USF Bulls: Offense Scores Seven Touchdowns in Scrimmage TAMPA  The USF offense combined for nearly 400 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns in a scrimmage Saturday morning at the USF football practice fields. Three quarterbacks accounted for 255 yards through the air while the offense gained 111 yards on the ground. Pat Julmiste was 7-of-13 for 113 yards. The sophomore scored one rushing touchdown. Evan Kraky was 12-of-24 for 86 yards although the frehmsn threw a pair of interceptions. Like Julmiste, he had a rushing touchdown. Senior Ronnie Banks was 5-of-7 for 56 yards and two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing. The defense recorded five sacks. Spring practice will conclude next Saturday with the Hops USF Spring Football Game at Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. At least one of Kraky's interceptions was the fault of the receiver, or just a stunning play by the defender going up and taking the ball away from him. ÂÂ
  7. Urbanik is pitching the 2nd game of the DH. USF leads 2-1 after two innings. It's nice to know that Ellis is in the bull pen if needed.  ;D
  8. We'll need a lot of fresh pitchers this coming week with games against Stetson and @East Carolina. Then UCF comes in the following week. It looks like both our pitching and hitting will be a tough combination to beat going into the meat of the seasson.
  9. It could have been worse if the Coach didn't take out Brand to put his son in. ;D
  10. I'm not sure, but they stopped one game we were way ahead in after 7 innings a couple of weeks ago. Maybe a team can say No Mas. LOL
  11. In softball, Ellis pitched another one hit gem in beating St Louis 7-0. She struck out eleven and walked only one. Their baseball team meanwhile isn't doing any better. USF leads them 8-0 through 5 1/2 inning. Brand has already hit two Home runs and has five RBI's.
  12. No, I didn't know there was a list. I just figured it was open like last year. I was stopped going in but then talked with one of the Coaches I knew who allowed us entry.
  13. Oh, I forgot to mention that Brian Fisher played. Hopefully, he straightened out his legal problems.
  14. It was very tough conditions for everybody yesterday. They couldn't even keep the pole vault bar on by itself. Of course, I showed up with shorts and a tee shirt and could only stay for a few hours because of the conditions. Today the weather is beautiful, so I'll probably go back. I think it starts at 3 PM and admission is free.
  15. I'm surprised nobody so far can furnish you with a tape of the game. I didn't save mine because we lost. Kawika was the dominant player on the field that day and he was constantly mentioned throughout the game for his outstanding play. You might want to try getting a copy from one of the people on the various Oklahoma boards. I'm sure many of them still remember Kawika very well and would be happy to supply you with a copy if they have one.
  16. It ended up being closed to the public. I know Kraky barreled his way in for a TD which was one of the big plays of the day. He might move up on the depth chart. One player [#21 Kenny Robinson, I think] took off his helmet and pads and hopped the fence. I don't know what that was all about, except it had something to do with a play and he was evidently upset. Brett will probably do a complete story on the scrimmage.
  17. Women's Golf Takes First Round Lead at Ryder Florida Women's Collegiate At the Don Shula Resort in Miami Lakes, the USF women's golf team shot a first round 305 to take a four shot lead in the Ryder Florida Women's Collegiate Championship. The 14-team event comprised of all Florida schools continues Saturday and Sunday. USF's Fernanda Rivera and Daniella Ronderos are tied for second place with a first round 75, one shot behind leader Merina DeBiase of Rollins. Amanda Smith (77) and Mary Calderon (78) are also among the top 10 after the first round. Ryder Florida Women's Coll. 18. Speaking of W/R's, Scott McCready is playing for the Scottish Claymores. http://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/football/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=6564
  19. You should tell that to Ellis. Not that she needs any motivation. ;D I went to the track meet for a few hours and had a good time watching the different events. The charbroiled $3 burgers are pretty decent in case you stop by.
  20. USF wins first game 6-2. Hudspeth pitched 7 innings, struck out nine and gave up one earned run. Ingram pitched two good innings in relief to close out the game.
  21. Ok. Thanks. Usually this scrimmage is better than the spring game.
  22. Does anybody know what time it starts?
  23. http://www.admirals.nl/team/bio2004/rubin_deandrew.html A couple of their W/R's are injured, so maybe DeAndrew will get a real chance to do his thing tomorrow. DeAndrew is listed on the depth chart: http://www.admirals.nl/team/depthchart/depth01.html
  24. Big USF meet starts today By PETE YOUNG, Times Staff Writer Published April 2, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAMPA - In sum, it's the greatest track and field event ever on the South Florida campus. "There's no question this is the best meet we've ever had," USF coach Greg Thiel said. "It's really turning into a big meet." A mix of top college teams, including Michigan, Alabama and the Florida women, and top-flight Olympic contenders competing unattached will run, jump and throw today and Saturday. Among the featured athletes are four-time NCAA and two-time U.S. champion long jumper Savante Stringfellow, whose career best is 27 feet, 111/2 inches. The showcase events include the women's hammer throw (approximately 5 p.m. today), which features an Olympic favorite in UF graduate Erin Gilreath and as many as five of the top eight finishers in the NCAA indoor championships last month, including USF's Dayana Octavien. The women's 400 meters (approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday) includes former UF star Anita Howard, and USF standout Amber Delpino has the nation's third-fastest time this year, 57.75, in the women's 400-meter hurdles (approximately 8:25 p.m. Saturday). USF's Jimmy Baxter is the favorite in the men's high jump. Baxter has won three straight meets and set a career best of 7-5 at this event last year. "He's doing very well. He's ready to bang out a big one," Thiel said. Thiel said the women's 800 meters (approximately 8 p.m. Saturday) and men's pole vault (4 p.m. Saturday) have superb fields, and he hopes the meet continues to grow. Nineteen schools will be at USF today, and Ohio State has committed for next year. "This is one we hope to build on," Thiel said. "We think we've found a niche a little bit (in the first weekend in April)." The field events start at 4 p.m. today and 3 Saturday. The running events begin at 6:30 tonight and 6 Saturday. "We found that a lot of the out-of-town teams were staying over Saturday night, so why not do a twilight meet?" Thiel said. "It's beautiful here at twilight and we'll have some really fast times."
  25. From the Oracle today: Bulls hope to get help from healing players By Thomas Simonetti Staff Writer April 02, 2004 The USF baseball team looked ready for a weekend of Conference USA action at practice Thursday. Two players in particular are itching to get in the lineup for the three-game series with Saint Louis. Third baseman Jeff Baisley and first baseman Matt McHargue have been out with injuries, and depending on what the trainers say today, both might see action this weekend. "I definitely want to play," McHargue said. The sophomore pulled a hamstring trying to beat out a ground ball against Southern Miss Sunday. His return would add a lot to the lineup. He is second on the team in doubles (8 ), home runs (5), RBIs (24) and walks (12). If the trainers say McHargue can play -- and if it were up to him-- he said he would be in the game. "It sucks sitting there and knowing you can contribute and you have to sit on the bench and wait for your leg to heal. But I should be ready. We need a sweep. We played really well on Tuesday. I think I can help the team." The situation for McHargue, though, is that his fate rests in the hands of team trainers and coach Eddie Cardieri. "The trainers are going to take a look at those two (players) tomorrow, and I'll take a look at that time," Cardieri said. He said he is hopeful that they will both play next weekend, but he hasn't ruled this weekend out. And while McHargue has missed only one game with the pulled hamstring, Baisley hasn't played since the beginning of March, missing 15 games. He said it was hard to watch his team play two games against No. 6 Miami and to have to sit through last weekend's series against No. 16 Southern Miss. Baisley said his foot, which he broke in a game against Illinois in early March, feels good. He started jogging on it a couple days ago but said he couldn't sprint yet. "I think I can either DH at the end of the weekend or get a couple pinch hits," Baisley said. "The doctor said I could play as long as it feels good." The junior said he probably wouldn't be able to play in the field, but depending on how his foot feels he may be able to contribute as early as Friday. "It stinks," Baisley said. "Especially playing against teams like Miami and Southern Miss, you want to get in there but you can't," Baisley said. If Baisley returns, the Bulls get back Conference USA's preseason All-Conference third baseman. Baisley started every game last season and led the club in hits. Getting Baisley back on the field will help the Bulls defensively. His four errors in 12 starts are half as many as backup Jeremy Brand has in just as many starts. "Those are two of our regulars," Cardieri said. "You want to have those two in the lineup." Cardieri said he hopes to sweep the Billiken's (8-17), who are coming off a 19-2 loss to Southwest Missouri State. Casey Hudspeth will get the nod in tonight's game instead of the Bulls' usual Friday starter, Kyle Schmidt. Schmidt will go Saturday, but the big change in the weekend pitching rotation is Cardieri's decision to name Chase Lirette his tentative starter for Sunday, meaning lefthander Nick Manganaro will likely work from the bullpen. Cardieri's decision comes after Lirette struck out five in seven innings Tuesday in the win over Stetson. He gave up only five hits and one unearned run in that outing. Jeremy Bellotti, who was on the bench earlier in the year, has been good at the plate, Cardieri said, and took the spot from freshman Ty Taborelli. Bellotti doubled for an RBI and scored a run Tuesday against the Hatters. ÂÂ
