  1. From what I could gather at the Spring game today, the date for the Pitt game is the only one on the USF schedule that is up in the air at the moment. Evidently, ESPN is trying to get Pitt and USF to shift the game to Monday, but the person I spoke with didn't know if it was to be an afternoon or evening game. Nothing is yet finalized. ÂÂ
  2. Thankfully, we are done with the series today. ECU played very well as expected and we did not.

  4. ECU Coach Scared of USF?  : Friday, April 9, 2004 Sports Pirates return home to face USF By KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor GREENVILLE -- After an eight-game road trip, the East Carolina Pirates finally return to Harrington Field for a weekend series against the South Florida Bulls. The first game begins tonight at 7, followed by Saturday's game at 6 p.m. and Sunday's game at 1 p.m. "South Florida (23-8, 7-2) scares me," ECU coach Randy Mazey said. "They can really hit. They're ahead of us in the league and they're playing with a lot of confidence. "They have the whole team back from last year offensively. They could really hit last year, so they're swinging the bats really well. A lot of people think they're the best team in the league right now. It's going to be a heck of a series." The Pirates (25-6, 6-3 Conference USA) are riding a six-game winning streak after beating Duke 7-5 Wednesday. While Mazey is happy to be playing at home, he said his Pirates have been well away from Harrington Field. "We've been playing awful good on the road," he said. "For some reason our guys really like to hit on the road. They did last year and they have so far this year. "I hope we can continue to swing the bats the way we are regardless of what surface is under our feet." Though the Pirates were on the road for last weekend's series against Charlotte, which ECU swept, it almost seemed like a home series for the Purple and Gold. "That was unbelievable," Mazey said of the ECU fans in attendance in Charlotte. "It was probably 10 to 1 more fans than they had. That just says a lot about the East Carolina faithful. "They were willing to go up there and support us. We outdraw people at a lot of the places we go. That's normal for these people around here. It's like taking 'The Jungle' on the road." The Pirates will be able to play in front of the home "Jungle" this evening, which excites right fielder Darryl Lawhorn. "It's going to be great coming back to Greenville and playing in front of these fans," he said. "They're going to be pumped, and we're going to be pumped, too." Darryl Lawhorn, who has seven homers, 24 RBIs and is hitting .264, is expecting a tough battle with the Bulls. "They're going to be tough," Darryl Lawhorn said. "They have some good arms on that team and some good bats. They put up a good fight every time we play them, so it's going to be a battle out here at Harrington." Trevor Lawhorn, Darryl's twin brother, said that his team will look to feed off its momentum thanks to the winning streak. The Pirates swept last weekend's series against Charlotte to move into a fourth place tie in C-USA, one game behind the leaders. "That was huge," Trevor Lawhorn said of the sweep. "We lost two out of three to Tulane. Those were probably games we should have won. We had to go out and sweep Charlotte just to get us back in the rankings. "Getting into a winning streak and going into this weekend series with South Florida is big." Trevor Lawhorn, who leads the team with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs while hitting at a .336 clip, has been named to the first watch list of 30 players for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award. The award is given to the top amateur player in America presented by USA Baseball in partnership with the Major League Baseball Players Association. USA Baseball will announce their five finalists in June. South Florida catcher Devan Ivany is also on the list. Ivany is hitting .392 with three homers and 36 RBI. He has also thrown out 12 baserunners.

  7. Portion of Q & A with Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer Paul Zeise: Q: I know this is a young team but given the schedule the Panthers will play, maybe I am an extreme optimist, but I think they can go undefeated if they get back to fundamentals. What do you think? Tom Cheftbone of Ocean City, Md. ZEISE: A whole lot of things would have to go perfect, not just right, but perfect, for that to even have a chance of happening. In fact, eight or nine wins is going to be a stretch for this team because there are so many questions all around. The biggest is the offensive line. Spring drills have been [hard] to figure out because either the defensive line is the second coming of the Purple People Eaters or Steel Curtain or the offensive line is taking matador lessons. Every play seems to be a jailbreak on the quarterbacks. And I'd estimate that at least one out of two field goal attempts seem to get blocked. You can't win if you can't block people and right now I see a whole lot of holes up front. The schedule is also tougher than you think. Opening at South Florida in early September is not easy for anyone, much less a completely rebuilt team with a lot of younger players filling major roles. It is going to be like 100 degrees or so and the heat and humidity could become a major factor early. ;D http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04100/298704.stm

  9. Baseball America put outs its regional projections as well. It also USF in the same regional with Miami, UCF and BCC. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/040409regional.html Nice to see USF mentioned on Baseball America's College Wekend Preview page: • South Florida is in a three-way with No. 11 Southern Mississippi and No. 12 Tulane for first place in Conference USA with a 7-2 league record. The Bulls travel to No. 17 East Carolina, which at 6-3 if fourth in the league, for a key conference series. The Pirates are coming off a 7-5 win Wednesday at Duke. Southern Mississippi visits St. Louis this weekend in league play after dropping two midweek games to Mississippi State, while Tulane welcomes Louisville to town. Sophomore lefthander Brian Bogusevic, one of the nation's top two-way players, led the Green Wave to 1-0 win against No. 3 Louisiana State on Tuesday by throwing eight shutout innings. He's hitting .306-5-34 (topping Tulane in RBIs) and is 5-2, 3.30 on the mound, tied for the team lead in wins and best in ERA among its four starters. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/college/040409preview.html
  10. This article from the Oracle didn't mention King either: Thursday, April 08, 2004 Sports Oracle file photo/JAISEN CROCKETT Second string quarterback Ronnie Banks could be seen grimacing on the sidelines Wednesday during practice with a recurring knee injury. Football practice intense with defense By Thomas Simonetti Staff Writer April 08, 2004 At spring football practice Wednesday, the sideline was littered with trash-talking and the field was home to many good defensive plays. After practice the coaches applauded the team's intensity. "I thought we had a lot more energy," defensive coordinator Rick Kravitz said. "I think both sides of the ball were a little more excited about going after each other." Late in the practice, coach Jim Leavitt turned the No. 1 defense dressed in green loose on the white-shirted first team offense, and it got very physical. The players were going at it so hard a fight broke out between the two sides. Linebacker Vinny Capogna looked as if he was ready to take on the entire offensive line as he dragged one player down to the ground before other players broke up the fight. The players in white seemed to make more plays. When Pat Julmiste dropped back on one occasion he tried to hit Brian Fisher in the middle of the field but linebacker Devon Davis stepped in front and got the interception. "With that kind of energy they have more fun and they make more plays." Kravitz said. "I thought it was a good practice." Defensive back Kenny Robinson and linebacker Devon Davis also made plays, batting away passes. "I thought they were very focused and that's what you want in a spring practice," Kravitz said. "You want them to be focused but you want them to compete and that's what they did. They came out and competed and stayed focused with it. They didn't play around." The offense could use some more work before the Green and Gold game Saturday, quarterback coach Rod Smith said. "During the seven on seven and the individual we've got to make some more plays down there at the end zone," he said. " It wasn't too bad, we're getting better." Leavitt praises quarterbacks Fisher came in and played quarterback in some very important games when Ronnie Banks and Julmiste were ineffective last season. This year, Leavitt doesn't feel Fisher will be needed, and he had praise for his quarterbacks. "We've got three quarterbacks right now that we really feel good about." Leavitt said. "Ronnie Banks, Pat and Evan Kraky. We feel like all three quarterbacks can move our offense. I feel a lot better now going into (the spring game) than I did last year going into it. You've got Pat who's got starting experience, you've got Ronnie who's got starting experience and has played a lot of football and you've got Kraky who's throwing the ball pretty good." Fisher available for game Brian Fisher will be available for Saturday's spring game, Leavitt said. After he missed practices last week, Wednesday was his second consecutive time on the practice field. Leavitt said he will not see time at quarterback as he did in 2003. He will be used only at wide receiver.
  11. Bouncing back -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 6, 2004 NFL Europe Touchdown duo Marcus Helfman and Scott McCready insist the Claymores will bounce back after being washed out in Berlin. San Francisco 49ers loan Helfman, who hauled in a 10-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Curt Anes to open the Claymores account in the second quarter, said: "Obviously we are disappointed at losing the opening game, but the team showed some great determination and I'm sure we'll learn from this loss and come back even stronger. "It's a ten week season and we have a long way to go. This league is very competitive and all of the teams are pretty balanced. Every game is going to be a fight to the finish to win, but I know when the dust settles the Claymores will be one of the teams competing at the end of the season." Former New England Patriots wide receiver McCready was also positive after his stunning diving touchdown catch that brought the Claymores back into the game in the second half. He said: "The team are still together - the camaraderie is very good. I was proud of the way we rallied during the fourth quarter and moved the ball 50 yards down the field. I'm delighted to have got the touchdown - it was really just instinctive when the ball was deflected and bounced my way. But it's that old adage of if you don't win it really doesn't mean anything. "We fought back and played to the end which says a lot about the character of the group we have here this season. It's tough to win on the road and even tougher to come back from two touchdowns back but I was proud at the way we never gave up." And McCready had a message for Claymores fans, saying: "I'm a veteran in this league and I"ll be telling our guys that although it's a short season, there is still a long way to go. We have to face Berlin again in Scotland and I know with our fans and in our stadium it will be a completely different scenario. "We were one minute from pulling the game around and I'm pretty confident that the team will bounce back from this and we'll get better and better as the weeks go on." Former Claymores coach Tomsula, now defensive coorindator with Thunder echoed the Claymores' scorers sentiments when he said: "It was a very tough game for us. It was also very difficult to play against the Claymores. They are a very good team and will improve as this season goes on. "We know it's going to be a tough re-match for us in Glasgow in a few weeks time. It's a long way to go but we'd love to be facing the Claymores again in the World Bowl."

  13. Why wait three years? We can be a Top 25 class this year, if we can just land a Top QB EARLY: http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=359&p=8&c=1&nid=1183502
  14. Bien...Maybe you can comment on DB Duane Moment. I know he is a track star in Broward County, but he was very much under the recruiting radar.
  15. I guess Carlton Williams doesn't count towards this year's class nor does Jeremy Burnett. If those guys were counted then we probably did.
  16. Don't forget also that they will have a Freshmen QB in there. I hope we don't hurt him too bad. ;D
  17. The Pitt coach supposedly turned down a potential Friday ESPN football game, according to an article I posted here previously. I don't know whether that was related to the USF game. If it was, then I can see ESPN trying to get it moved to Monday. So far, the Pitt fans haven't heard anything about a possible change and will let us know if they do. ÂÂ
  18. in 2003 Bill Buchalter said that USF had the best Line Backer recruiting class of ANY of the Florida schools. We are just starting to see how good they will get.
  19. Here is an interesting poll which SE Baseball puts out: April 5, 2004 SEBaseball.com Poll -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEBaseball.com Staff    SEBaseball.com Poll April 5, 2004 Clemson makes the biggest move of the 31 teams in this week's SouthEastern Baseball poll, jumping ten spots on the strength of two mid-week wins over Georgia. The Bulldogs rose three spots on the basis of their road sweep at Florida, while the Gators led a trio of teams who dropped eight spots. Florida Atlantic also fell eight spots, while Stetson gained eight to edge the Owls for 21st by taking the weekend series. Birmingham Southern slipped eight, losing three to Washington State on a long road trip. South Florida moved up seven spots to 16th, while Mississippi State dropped seven to 28th. We are including experts on college baseball from around the southeast along with the SEBaseball.com staff writers, and it will no longer be designated a "top 20". Since we always listed "others receiving votes", for this year we don't make an arbitrary distinction between number 20 and number 21. The scoring system is the same as it was in 2003, but the results will be reported differently. Last year we assigned points so that whichever team was number one always was reported as having 1000 points, and the remaining teams' points were scaled to that standard. For 2004, the value 1000 represents a unanimous number one choice, and all teams' points are scaled including the actual number one. This allows a team's points to be compared from week-to-week. http://sebaseball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=282921 There is an article on that site relating to C-USA Baseball. Here's what they said about ECU and USF: April 7, 2004 C-USA NOTEBOOK -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SEB Staff Mark Etheridge Conference USA has a top heavy feel as Southern Miss, Tulane, South Florida, and East Carolina are on track for big seasons... EAST CAROLINA 24-6, 6-3 ECU hit 10 home runs in three games at Charlotte and leads Conference USA with 48 round-trippers on the season. The Pirates have homered 20 times in nine C-USA games. DARRYL and TREVOR LAWHORN have hit home runs in the same game four times this season and twice in the same inning. Darryl has hit five homers in the last six games while Trevor has hit one home run in each of the last four games. Senior RYAN JONES leads ECU's hitting attack, batting .429. Of Jones' 36 hits on the season, 24 are extra-base hits, including 12 doubles, three triples and nine home runs. In his last two C-USA starts, junior RHP GREG BUNN has 19 strikeouts in 16 innings. Bunn has only allowed one earned run on seven hits and walked one batter. ECU posted a season-high 21 hits in the second game of the Charlotte series and a season-high 24 runs in the series finale. The last time, ECU scored 20 runs was February 2002 when the Pirates defeated New York Tech, 20-8. The Pirates racked up 48 hits in three games against the 49ers. USF 22-8, 7-2 The Bulls swept a three-game series from Saint Louis to move into a first place tie in C-USA with a 7-2 record, while raising its overall mark to 22-8. USF hit.423 with six home runs and 35 RBI, outscoring the Billikens 35-9. The Bulls pitching staff finished the series with a 2.16 ERA, allowing eight walks and striking out 21. Senior SS MYRON LESLIE scored his 200th career run on Friday night, becoming just the fourth player in school history to do that. When JEREMY BRAND hit two home runs in Saturday's 18-1 win, it marked the second time this season that he had gone deep twice in the same game. He did it earlier against Illinois on March 6. On Sunday, sophomore DH MATT McHARGUE topped him, becoming the fourth Bull ever and the first since Chris Heintz in 1996 to hit three homers in a single game. He has taken over the team lead in home runs with eight. USF will leave the state of Florida for the first time this season on Friday when it opens a three-game series at East Carolina. http://sebaseball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=283311 ÂÂ

  21. Bulls Set for Three-Game Series at East Carolina Gamenotes TAMPA, Fla. (April 7, 2004)-The University of South Florida softball team will look for its fourth consecutive conference sweep when the Bulls travel to Greenville, North Carolina for a three-game series against East Carolina. The Bulls (42-7, 10-2 C-USA) ranked 18th in the latest NFCA poll, is coming off a three-game sweep of Saint Louis this past weekend in Tampa. USF is riding a 16-game win streak, which includes sweeps over Charlotte and Southern Miss. USF is led by Conference USA pitcher of the Week Leigh Ann Ellis, who is 28-4 on the season with a 0.77 ERA. Ellis has won the award for four weeks in a row and five times this year. Tiffany Stewart was named C-USA hitter of the week for her 5-for-7 performance against Saint Louis. Stewart tallied seven RBI and three runs in two games including a game ending grand slam on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday when the Bulls and Pirates get together for the 11th time overall. USF holds the all-time series lead 8-2. http://gobulls.usf.edu/Sports/News.asp?i=643&s=Softball
  22. There will be live Audio Webcasts of the ECU/USF games on Saturday and Sunday: http://pirateradio1250.com/site_htm/ecu_programming_1.htm Does anybody from ECU know if the Friday game will also be heard over the Net somewhere?
  23. USF is still receiving votes in their poll. http://www.sportswriters.net/ncbwa/news/2004/poll040405.html It's pretty amazing how much we dropped just by losing two out of three to USM a couple of weeks ago. Those were our only losses since they had us ranked #33. We lost one of those games by one run, and that made a great difference in our ranking in ALL the polls. It's a shame that we didn't use Lirette to start against USM when we knew that Manganaro was coming off a couple of bad outings. We escaped with him last night after falling behind 4-0 to Stetson. Nice to have Lirette starting against ECU.
  24. Oh the GRASS is nice. I thought you meant the actual stadium. We have great starting pitching and our bats are as good as anybody in C-USA. I'm concerned with our fielding and relief pitching - especially in the late innings. The key for us is putting up a lot of runs early - which we can do - and then trying to hang on for the win. I'm also not very pleased with our coaching as I believe we wait too long to take out pitchers. ÂÂ
