This is why Temple scares the hell out of me..... Especially with Magee's size at LB.  Hector and Senat were both VERY productive inside for us and not just against the run.

The good news is we get them later in season.

That might be worse cause of the weather, back to back road games and the war on i4 looming. However, there are a lot of dudes and plenty of depth. We haven’t seen that with a USF team since.... ever? Hopefully some guys step up, but between Kevin Bronson, Kegs, Pinkney, Boyce (Duke transfer who sat out last year), Blake Green (another transfer whom has done well in camp), the redshirt freshmen Darrien Grant, Jabreel Stephens, and true freshmen Tyrone Barber, Waller, Leacock and Williams there will be plenty of dudes.

That's my read.  I don't get what everyone is so down about, Strong is challenging his team.  I mean everyone is seems upset or something... or thinks something is wrong with the offense.  It's one scrimmage, in terms of the QB play Strong has likely suspected that Barnett was going to be the guy when he went and recruited him.  People think something is wrong because he's likely winning the job but it's nothing wrong with it... the guy is immensely talented and completely healthy.  You're worried about a guy who won the starting job at Alabama even though he had literal cuts in his intestines.  Arizona was just a fiasco because the entire staff got fired and Herm announced the competition will be for the #2 position.  We literally got lucky this guy made a bad decision in going to ASU because he's one of the best football players we've ever had at our school.  He is our first NFL talent at QB... BJ got drafted but come on...

Nothing wrong with Kean and O... they're good for what we normally get but Blake Barnett is a completely different animal.  We never get the good toys like this.  We're going to win the conference.

That’s the Calibull we all know and love! Undefeated champions!

I also don’t remember a scrimmage ever going over well here. It seems like after every scrimmage either defense didn’t do their job or offense made too many mistakes. I don’t look much into scrimmages at all.

I mean, yes. A coaching staff is supposed to find the problems and point them out so the players and coaches can fix them. If one unit does a good thing, the staff will get on the opposite unit for allowing it to happen. This happens every year with every program when the team is ready to hit a team in another jersey.  CCS has been focusing on “mental toughness.” Seems like the defense finally found their mental toughness when they’ve been flying around and being vocal during big plays. Barnett led three scoring drives including a dime to Roland. It’s possible Strong is saying the other guys haven’t stepped up even though they’ve been in the system. I’m warming up to BB. Seems like he’s come in with his head down and ready to work.

I guess, but if we're going to say "what about the 4 point loss vs Houston and the 7 point loss to UCF," what about the seven point win against 5-7 Tulane, six point win over 2-10 Tulsa, or 4 point OT win over 6-6 South Carolina? We could have been 7-5 just as easily as 12 - 0.

FAU and UCF have their question marks this year but I think the rankings are based more on program trajectory right now. Both of those teams overperformed last year and ended on a high note where we underperformed. FAU went from consecutive 3-9 years to 11-3 with a conference championship and beat down their mediocre opponent in their bowl game like they were supposed to. UCF went from winless, to 6-6, to undefeated with a conference championship, NY6 win, and fake claim to the national title. In that timeframe, we went 8-5 with no conference championship and a bowl loss, to 10-3 with no conference championship and OT bowl win over a mediocre team, to 10-2 with no conference championship and OT bowl win over a mediocre team again. That's been looking like our ceiling whereas FAU and UCF have been on an upward trajectory. We got our preseason respect at the beginning of last year, starting out at No. 19, picked to win the conference, did nothing with it and are now without QF.

I still think it's crazy that UCF is going to be ranked with the loss of their entire coaching staff but they return most of the players that made the 12-0 run possible so it makes sense that expectations are another Top 25 year. Same with FAU, they ended on a high note and the Lane Train is a media darling until they are brought back down to earth. Our expectations are an eight or nine win season and in the AAC that doesn't get you ranked.

USF went 11-2 in 2016 and 10-2 in 2017; would’ve been 11 but the Umass game was cancelled due to conference game reshuffling after the hurricane.

USF also had their entire staff (sans King) switched up and we’re still ranked. UCF, definitely deserves to be ranked. USF doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt until they prove they dsncreplace all of those starters including Q, which is fine.

Every AP voter’s preseason poll is different based on whatever parameters they decide to set; expected outcome, outcome based on last season, coaching staffs, their perception of certain programs, etc, so it’s more of an arm shrug than anything. I’m convinced a lot of them are to make the huge opening weekend games look bigger.

The only thing I don’t get is why teams like Texas, FSU, Florida consistently get ranked in the preseason too 20 without having to “prove it.” Regardless of their performance last year.

Why would a gator grad/fan "support" the Bulls?  I would think the more important question is why students and USF alumni are not supporting the team to the fullest extent possible.

You want more butts in the seats from the community?  Create more family friendly/cost effective ticket packages. But good luck with that on Thursday nights or Saturday at noon

Jeez you guys really harp on nomenclature. It’s possible that statement describes all of the above, he clearly knows issues that need to be corrected.

Also, what packages are you looking for? USF games are the most affordable around so I’m not sure how ticket price is a deterrent unless you’re expecting free tickets or heavily discounted for your family. It’s also worth calling a ticket rep with these concerns, there may be packages available to you.

And you do realize the University has no control whatsoever on game times right? The folks that complain that no one shows up are the same that complain about game times. Noon games suck, everyone plays noon games. Don’t stay at home and then yell at everyone for not showing up.

Also the above statements aren’t directed specifically at you, just blows my mind sometimes with the fan base.

I will just echo what others in this thread have said in that I will reserve judgment of this hire for 2-5 years....... But if he doesn’t have a plan out in 6 months for an OCS he’s a failure.

This gets me every time. The plan is there needs to be private funding. What magical money are we building this OCS to where a plan should be made in six months?

I got VP at Merrill at 29 so its all true.

    Back to actual analysis...

I like that he knows how CFB works at the highest levels. I don't think he can "get us into the playoffs" but he will have more insight into the process than anyone else. AND into how the P5/committees/ranking orgs think. That matters - if you want to sit at the adult table you cant act like youre at the kids table.

I wonder why his name did not come up before. Why the sudden excitement? Was he a subpar candidate before and now he is magically an awesome hire because hes the one? We went from wanting Brooks/Jurich to this guy being perfect... really?

Michael Kelly wasn’t brought up because it was widely thought there was no way in hell USF could pull him away from his job with the CFP. His ties to USF, Tampa, the collegiate landscape and the CFP itself, as well as extensive work with a power conference (the ACC) is an absolute grand slam home run of a hire for USF to make. Everyone locally and nationally are raving about him, including folks from ESPN, The Athletic, TBSC, USF, the CFP, ACC, Derrick Brooks, Rob Higgins et al. The combo of Kelly-Higgins bringing events and publicity to the region and USF will be amazing. Kelly has made lasting relationships in this region and across the whole college football landscape.

This is is the perfect hire for USF athletics. And the only folks that are upset are just saying “it’s not Jurich.” No one had any idea if Jurich was interesting, how much he would cost and what the perception of the hire would be. USF brought in a young mover and shaker with a fantastic track record and knowledge of the area, I’m not sure how you do any better.

  6. Also to note, last year the majority of the starting five were grad transfers or freshmen who’ve never played together. At least this year you start to see a core of guys who have at least practiced together in CBG’s first year who seen now eligible; Laquincey Rideau, TJ Lang and Alexis Yetna. Hopefully they can work with Collins, Brown and Big Nik to improve what they had last season. I’ll always be optimistic with basketball because one or two guys can turn around a program or they could start clicking at any moment, but I won’t judge CBG until likely 2019.

  7. I will always love xCWT for not only turning around this program’s recruiting, but also the culture. After Skippy things could’ve gotten much worse with the way the conference’s were split up.

I will also say, Tags hasn’t won a chess match against anyone, and not sure if that’ll work against guys like Dabo Swinney, Mark Richt, etc. It may take him a few years to get over that hump, and hopefully FSU fans are OK with that. I’ve heard folks clamor for competing for the conference this season and competing for a natty next season. That’s a mighty huge mountain to climb.

If anyone can do it he can. The only thing that’s frustrating is wasting 2016. They didn’t have an answer for Temple defensively.

We have a crap load of former 3/4 star transfers looking for a fresh start, a bunch of freshman coming here fir an opportunity for early playing time. Nothing but opportunity for all players. The hungriest shall get the most playing time. This year NIT minimum and big dance the following year.

I hope no one plans on evaluating coach Gregory until at least 2019 and saying NIT minimum this season is absurd.

The two 4-Star players both have to sit per transfer rules in 2018 so they won’t even be on the court until 2019.

The new freshman, JUCO transfers, guys like Justin Brown and David Collins who had valuable reps last season, plus the transfers that sat last year and are eligible will all be able to contribute this season; but I wouldn’t expect anything tangible yet. Hopefully they can continue the play from late last season and find their game.

I’m definitely all in on Gregory as a program builder as he has replaced this entire roster in two cycles. That’s nothing short of remarkable. I’m just hoping no fans start calling for his head prematurely because the results aren’t there. Last year was Year -1 IMO and this year is Year 0. Let’s seee what his coaching chops are in 2019. Everything else is gravy.

  9. The thing about he home and homes is they conveniently leave out what the buyout is on the contract. What’s the point of scheduling a home and home if the buyout is peanuts? How much you want to bet Lville doesn’t return to Oviedo because the buyout is nothing or they push it into oblivion? At least for the three for one it’s $1.5M for Lville and for UF it’s $2.5M. Also our media will always post that, note the UCF media does not.

Everyone assumes contracts are apples for apples. Harlan is realizing how paramount it is to hold these teams (who get stupid ridiculous TV payouts because of P5) to their word or get some serious cash. Plus, you get the marquee opponent. It’s sounding like their philosophy is “we’d rather play lower tier teams to boost our win totals” than play a blue blood and earn it. Is it fair? Hell no. But FSU did it, anytime and anywhere. They can do their thing, but don’t look down on USF and Harlan for trying something different.

Also when you have small payouts teams will back out when they get a better opponent, look at the UCF/Texas game. Now since the numbers aren’t out we have no idea, hey might have gotten a better payout and that 3 for 1 with Lville may have been terrible, but I strongly doubt it. The rules are the same for all G5.
