The organization hopes Roddy Beaubois and Dominique Jones will blossom as future cornerstones. But Friday, the opening day of the proving ground for young players, they were outplayed by Denver's Ty Lawson and Coby Karl as the Nuggets put an 88-70 whipping on the Mavericks.

Jones admitted afterward to being nervous, but he did get to the basket and the free throw line as advertised. He was 9-of-12 from the line and finished with 19 points. But he also finished with five turnovers, one fewer than Beaubois had.

"I made a couple mistakes on easy decisions," said the 6-4 Jones, who was taken 25th in the draft last month. "I had the jitters. When I do something new, I get nervous. But once I get the hang of it, it's gone.

"I feel good about what I did, even though I didn't do close to my best. It's a learning process. But I hate to lose, whether it's summer league, handicap league, whatever. Coaches like to see you play hard. But I like to see us win."
