Notre Dame could put an end to this if they joined the Big East in football.  (I know that they won't).

In the immortal words of Daniel Carver, "Wake up, white people."

Notre Dame is never going to help the Big East.  In fact, Notre Dame is actively causing the Big East to die, and it plays right into Notre Dame's master plan.

Big 10 expansion will kill Big East football, allowing ND to remain independent, while joining the BE leftovers in a small, private Catholic hoops conference with an NCAA automatic bid.

Over 10 years ago, Miami told Tranghese that the arrangement with ND would lead to nothing but trouble, but he did nothing, and now Notre Dame will singlehandedly (and INTENTIONALLY) destroy the Big East.  And profit from it.

big east has no one to blame but themselves

the region of country is too big  NOT to be a player

they may die now but they will one day come back and be a force to be reckoned with
