Gilchrist Drains 15-of-16 Freethrows in 65-58 Victory

USF's victory gives the BIG EAST Conference a 35-0 record to start the season.

CHARLESTON, S.C. - University of South Florida sophomore forward Augustus Gilchrist hit 15-of-16 free throws to lead the Bulls to their third win of the season, a 65-58 victory over Davidson in the Charleston Classic.

The Bulls (3-0) will play at 9:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of the LaSalle / South Carolina game.

USF led by as many as 12 points with seven minutes to go in the second half, but Davidson cut the lead to two with 57.8 seconds to play.

Gilchrist made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 37 seconds to help the Bulls hold on.

Junior guard Dominique Jones recorded his third career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while junior forward Jarrid Famous added 10 rebounds.

Jones' last double-double was Jan. 20 against DePaul when he had 26 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 30 points and 14 rebounds at Richmond on Dec. 5, 2007.

After shooting only 36 percent from both the field and free throw line in the first half, USF rallied to hit 9-of-19 (47%) field goals and 18-of-23 free throws (78%) in the second period.

Davidson shot 30.8 percent from the field and committed 10 turnovers, including five consecutive during a three-minute sequence in the first half that saw USF push out to an 11-point lead, its biggest of the half.

Gus was 3 of 9 from the field, you'd think they'd have been smart enough to stop fouling him.

3 of 9 because he was getting hacked everytime he tried to shoot.

Free throw shooting is a lost art.  You have to make free throws to close out close games.

Super job last night.

Glad to see the free throw issue has been addressed after how many years???? Hoping the BB Team keeps up the great work amidst the beat downs.

Ironically, last night was the worst free throw night of the very early season.  DoJo struggled mightily in the first half.  I listened to the Davidson broadcast and holy crap... that announcer was bashing Jones all night, basically calling him garbage... saying he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, that he panics any time someone is near him, etc.    Jones did much better all around down the stretch of the game.  Gilchrist was the bright spot from the line... if not for his effort, we would have been sub 500 from the line.

With the climate going on in NCAA athletics, you’re either moving forward at a hard pace or you’re not. I think what intrigued me the most is they’re very determined to become a big player nationally.
