What the hell is Waving the Wheat?

To go with the rock chaulk post, what is the meaning behind waving the wheat?  I remember them doing it when I was at the ku-USF game in 2006 each time they scored.

It's just a thing that looks cool to see, kinda like the "wave" at a stadium.  Kansas is the leading state in wheat production i believe.

It's supposed to look like a field of wheat blowing in the wind, which is actually a beautiful thing.

I still remember as a kid driving down the highway with the family and nothing but wheat fields for miles, and just the sight of seeing it waving in the wind,  looks like a endless golden ocean with ripples everywhere.
