jayhawk99 Posted September 10, 2008 Group: Member Topic Count: 0 Content Count: 11 Reputation: 0 Days Won: 0 Joined: 09/26/2006 Share Posted September 10, 2008 There are a few places online that can give pretty detailed historical information on it, but the general idea is that it was originally "Rah, Rah, Jayhawk" and was originally used by the Science Club in 1866. It was later changed to "Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk" by an English professor, because it rhymed and reflected the limestone (aka chalk rock) which is a distinctive feature of Mount Oread where KU's campus is located. Many buildings at KU have limestone exteriors, and rock chalk is a very prominant on KU's campus. Edit: looks like the other Jayhawks beat me to it. :-[
