Best Case/Worst Case: South Florida

August 26, 2008 10:20 AM

Posted by ESPN.com's Brian Bennett

Let's continue our Best Case/Worst Case outlook for each Big East team with South Florida. (And remember, the truth is definitely in the middle).

Best Case

All the potential is fulfilled. The Bulls, who could be favored in their first 11 games, win all of them. Matt Grothe and the other nine returning starters on offense average 40 points a game, while George Selvie's NCAA-record 25 sacks leads a smothering defense. South Florida storms into Morgantown in the season finale and beats West Virginia for a third straight year. The Bulls go to the BCS title game and beat Florida for the national championship, sending a flood of home-state recruits to Tampa. Raymond James Stadium is renamed Jim Leavitt Field.

Worst Case

Succumbing to the pressure of their first-ever preseason ranking, the Bulls stumble in Week 2 at rival Central Florida. The defense misses Ben Moffitt, Trae Williams and Mike Jenkins more than anyone realized, while Grothe continues to struggle with turnovers. They drop a road game at improving N.C. State, then go into one of their usual mid-season funks, losing at Louisville (where they've never won) and Cincinnati. West Virginia humbles them in a driving snowstorm to end the year. The Bulls are relegated to the Papajohns.com Bowl in Birmingham, where they meet Central Florida in a rematch. They lose again.

Mine too, but the damned worse case brought it right back down.

Both are about equally ridiculous at this point in the season.

Thats a great article. Its basically what green and gold goggle wearing homers predict, versus what UCiFers predict.

Altho i think if the best case scenario were to happen, someone would have to resuscitate me

Worst case is not a crappy bowl...worst case is NO BOWL.  If we really stink it up this year, there is no way that we get 6+ wins.
