David Mayo's Top 25: It's Gator country, again

by David Mayo | The Grand Rapids Press

Sunday August 24, 2008, 12:25 AM

9. SOUTH FLORIDA (9-4) -- The Bulls ascended to No. 2 after a 6-0 start last year, then botched a game against Rutgers, lost in a driving storm at Connecticut, and committed a startling eight turnovers in a five-point loss to Cincinnati. They have 10 starters back on offense and seven starters returning on defense. The only question mark for a program which played its first game in 1997 is how to replace its best-in-the-nation cornerbacks.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

"For me, I never considered it that way (as a stepping stone), honestly. When I was offered the head job at South Florida, and I'm sincere about this, I never thought I would ever go anywhere."

    Jim Leavitt
