After years as a mediocre afterthought, Rutgers University's football team has finally showed signs in recent years of living up to the school's promises of bringing big-time college football to New Jersey. But with increased success also comes increased scrutiny. The university and state officials recently launched investigations following a series of stories in The Star-Ledger about the finances surrounding the football team, its coach and the expansion of its stadium. Rutgers President Richard McCormick has acknowledged the university's "lack of transparency" in not revealing it used an outside vendor to guaranteed football coach Greg Schiano $250,000 in compensation on top of the $2 million contract he signed last year. Ethical questions have also been raised about Rutgers signing a contract Nelligan Sports Marketing shortly before athletic director Robert Mulcahy's son was hired to work for the firm. As the football team begins pre-season practices, bloggers have been busy debating whether Rutgers' off-field financial scandals have already overshadowed the upcoming season. – Star-Ledger

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
