94 Bull Posted August 28, 2020 Group: Member Topic Count: 47 Content Count: 812 Reputation: 172 Days Won: 1 Joined: 01/06/2014 Author Share Posted August 28, 2020 Will COVID-19 keep USF from playing Notre Dame? Pat Zier Ledger correspondent TAMPA — South Florida Coach Jeff Scott won't confirm it, and going into this weekend, the USF athletic department hasn't made it official, but reports out of Indiana are that USF will play at Notre Dame Sept. 19 in its second game of the season. That would complete USF's nonconference schedule with The Citadel playing here Sept. 12 and the Bulls at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 26. USF also has eight AAC games. There could be a problem though, which may be why USF hasn't said anything. Notre Dame has paused practice because the school has shut down the campus due to the coronavirus. "Michael Kelly (USF athletic director) and I talk everyday," Scott said. "But I don't want to say anything. Over the last several weeks, we've talked to several schools and thought we had deals with six or seven of them, but it didn't work out. Until the nonconference games are finalized, I don't think it's appropriate to go into specifics. "I will say this," Scott continued. "The other day, I shared with our team the potential nonconference schedule and we had the best practice we've ever had." USF is making a concerted effort to play the best teams in college football, and adding Notre Dame would be in keeping with that. "Michael and I both believe in playing the best teams available," Scott said. "Our players work really hard and they deserve, when the schedule allows it, to be able to play on a unique stage against the best teams in the country. "It's an opportunity for them to showcase their talent and it's also very important for us as far as building our program and our brand," Scott said. "I'm excited about the opportunities we're going to have here in the future," Scott added. For schools like USF, scheduling quality Power Five competition can be difficult. Most good Power Five teams won't play at Group of Five schools because it hurts them financially. Instead, they pay the Group of Five team to travel. For example, USF was originally scheduled to play at Texas this year and Texas was paying USF $1.9 million to make the trip. In the future, USF has home games with Florida, Alabama, Miami and Louisville but to get those games, it had to agree to play twice at each school. So, Florida plays here in 2021 with USF going to Gainesville in 2022 and 2025. Alabama is here in 2023 with USF playing in Tuscaloosa in 2024 and 2026, and Miami is in Tampa in 2027 with the Bulls in Miami in 2025 and 2028. Louisville is here in 2024 with USF at Louisville in 2022 and 2026.
