18. Willie Taggart, South Florida Bulls : Taggart started four seasons at quarterback for Western Kentucky, then an FCS school, and finished as one of the most decorated players in program history. He twice was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and earned All-America honors as a senior in 1998.

Really cool. He made that program as a player and helped it rise from the ashes as a coach. Hoping he takes us to the promised land :GoBulls:

Scott Frost #5. Interesting article to pass the team. I just enjoyed reading some of the coaches and what they accomplished in their playing careers. Goes to show you, you don't have to be a star player to be a star coach.

My take as well. In looking at the ball-biographies...it's hard to separate their programs from what gives them their particular ranking. I think if you really were a top-ten coach, you'd probably be at a top ten school (e.g. South Alabama Jags and Scott Frost of UCF coming in at #5...the fifth BEST coach in the nation whose previous experience is offensive coordinator. Any chance that is a bit high until he's actually HEAD coached for a while?).

Then again...spring football is just around the corner, so this is a good placeholder.

The article isn't saying Frost is fifth best coach in the nation. It is saying among all head coaches in the nation he was the fifth best player. Big difference.

Didn't throw you off that Nick Saban was #43?

Interesting how they have Pat Fitzgerald at 2, saying no current coach has accomplished more as a college player, but has Jim Harbaugh at 1.

The equivalent of garbage time during a game...that time when announcers start talking about the coach's golf handicap. The writers & statisticians are just bored.

I think the logic on that is that no one has accomplished more than Fitzgerald, who won two awards, but Harbaugh was still the better player.
