Unless things have changed since I was in college, quality was secondary to price in my beer choice. Yuengling's problem is it costs as much as Bud, but tastes like Milwaukee's Best.

Yuengling is well respected amongst beer enthusiasts. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion and tastes but if it's been a while since you've tried Yuengling I would give it another shot. Most people consider it to be the same price as Bud but much better, not the other way around.

  2. Adidas has made a strong comeback in the last couple years and they are probably regarded as the best sneaker brand in the US or at least a close 2nd to Nike. Meanwhile Under Armour and their stock has been going downhill. If they end up making a USF line of Ultra Boosts the way Nike made college shoes you can immediately say goodbye to my money.

Of all the moral failings endemic to our species I have to rank not showing up to watch AAC football pretty low on the scale. On a weeknight vs. Temple even lower on the scale of mortal sins.

There are lots of pre-eminent factors such as a recent track record of losing for 4 very ugly years, ugly wins this season, garbage opponents and the undeniable fact that in person attendance is slipping at all levels of football. This is the way it is going to be. The land grant universities with generations of wealthy alumni and towns with nothing else to do will hold on a while but even their attendance is slipping. This is not something that will be fixed. It is something that at best will be mitigated. I've said myself that I don't like the stadium experience and much prefer the tv experience.

We aren't at the big boy's table and people locally don't care about minor league college football. Intellectually I find it hard to blame them. We need to be a great team playing great opponents before we can compete with the plethora of entertainment opportunities we are blessed with in this area. Until then no matter where we play I don't see great attendance. Like it or not our games are an entertainment offering. Thus they have to be entertaining. Are they? Do we have entertaining opponents? Is our play entertaining? I'm not sure I can honestly say yes. Sometimes it is. As long as we remain in the G5 without big tv money we will also lack coaching consistency.

I'm reminded of Gary Bettman and his quixotic quest to keep a team in Phoenix, Arizona. He insists it takes 1+ generations to build a fan base. He's probably right and he's going to force a series of owners to invest to prove his point. We are just hitting that 1st generation at 20 years old. Arguably a very awkward time as the novelty has worn off but the tradition and history haven't developed. Add in we've fallen from the heights the program reached rapidly which turns off those who attended during the Big East glory years. Being relegated does not help with the fan base. We are in an awkward spot. Good enough to compete with the big boys which sets the local expectations high. Perhaps too high to consistently reach. The city is probably too big of a city to want to support us if we were perennial CUSA level champions either.

It must be tough to market what seems to be small town football to a major city.

The cameras showing the empty side of the stadium is a legit concern but one I don't think can ever be fixed.

    Well said

They should do this once or twice every season. More people in the stands is always a good thing. Hopefully the rain will be gone by the time the game starts.

I wish they'd do it every single game with certain restrictions if we ever actually sell out. It generates fans, fills in seats that would otherwise be unsold, and can be a great way to reach recruits and coaches in the area.

Anyone else have knots in their stomach over this one?  Stout defensive line against the run and a short practice week?  Gilbert better game plan to spread them out and sling it this week.

I do. I know that I completely sacrificed a normally strict training routine/diet this week because of the hurricane. I'm afraid the players may have a combination of exhaustion and conditioning as well.

  6. I really think we played safe offenses against worse athletes to keep our offensive turnovers down. If we win the turnover battle against worse competition we should win the game. Wouldn't be surprised to see us do something similar against UCONN with hopefully a bit more success running and better special teams. Then we open up the playbook a bit more for Illinois. I don't think voters would follow things that way but no losses is all that matters.

  7. Now that I've had some time to rest on it I think that the play calling was different for these first 2 games than it will be the rest of the season. The coaching staff probably wanted to run basic plays for 3 reasons.

    1) Our team has more talented players. Basic plays and running down the middle SHOULD have worked better than it did.

    2) Limit turnovers. Turnovers would be the only reason that we lost these games. We did succeed at this.

    3) Keep play calling basic since the season is early and the coaching staff is new.

I expect to see riskier and more complex play calling now that the competition level is increasing and we've had some games under our belts.
