  1.    Not that I'm giving up on this year, but I think at this point in the season we have seen enough to get some idea of next year's team.

The prognosis is good, very good.

Here's a quick overview, position by position, of how I see next year's team shaping up.

QB---  Depth Chart: Grothe, Voss, Gregory/Allen?

Grothe should be one of the conference's best qbs next year with more seasoning, but depth is a real concern.  I see Voss (assuming he signs) as getting the first look as the back-up.  Gregory should be third on the chart, but with the depth at FS, Nate Allen could become the wild-card at qb, as I believe he still has great potential there.

           Overall status :  Slightly improved

RB---  Depth Chart:  Ponton, Plancher, Dorsey

Ponton has shown that he can be a solid, if not spectacular starter; and Plancher will hopefully make a full recovery and provide a change of pace.  Dorsey and Samuels will hopefully provide some depth, and I still hold out hope that we land one of the many premier backs in the state this year who will come in and contribute immediately.

            Overall status:  Much improved

WR---  Depth Chart:  Johnson, Edwards, Hill, Jackson, Mitchell, Hester.....

The loss of Green and Randolph will be more than offset by the continued development of this deep and talented group.  Hopefully Carlton Mitchell becomes the elite reciever that Johnny Peyton could have been, and helps this group become one of the nation's best.

             Overall status:  Improved

O-Line---  Depth Chart:  Dile, Griffin, Tolley, Shmidt, Hermann, Ide......

Although the line loses its best player in Thed Watson, everyone else returns.  Hopefully the young guys develop, and a healthy Tolley could become a very good left tackle.  Though Capogna is a great guy and hard worker, it would be nice to see another player come in and take that spot who has the size to hold up better at the line of scrimmage.

            Overall status:  Improved

D-Line---  Depth Chart:  Selvie, Julmiste, Clebert, Cray, Dixon, Buie, Robinson,Harris

Selvie and Julmiste could form one of the best pairs of rush ends in the conference, and a healthy Clebert could team up with Cray and the JuCo Dixon to finally give us a run-stuffing group of DTs.  The line uses no one of significance, and should see tons of young talent develop.

             Overall status:  Hugely Improved

LB---  Depth Chart:  Moffitt, Mompremier, Spires, Glover, McQueen, Joseph

This is the only position that will probably suffer some early in the season. Hopefully some of the redshirt freshman can come in and contribute on the weakside, and I feel that Spires will come in and start immediately on the strong side.

             Overall status:  Somewhat weaker

DB---  Depth Chart:  Jenkins, Williams, Verpaele, Gachette, Murphy, Roberts, C. Williams

This dbs have almost a ridiculous amount of depth, and should suffer very little from the loss of Burnett.  Could be one of the best defensive backfields in the country in terms of speed and experience.

             Overall status:  Improved

Return Game---  Players:  Johnson, T. Williams?  Samuels?  Carlton Hill?

Taurus Johnson is a tremendous kick returner, but the rest is unsettled without Randolph.  If Carlton Hill comes back, (which I dont anticipate) he could be an elite punt returner.  In any case, there are plenty of athletes ready to step in and contribute.

Overall status:  Should be just as good

Kicking Game---  Cant be any worse, can it?

Maybe i'm drinking the kool-aid, but it seems to me that this is a team that could actually compete for the conference title, and finally become a serious player on the national stage.

  2. That 4.5 forty time was not from a camp or combine, which means its word of mouth from either the player or coach.

Not trying to rain on the parade but the guy doesn't look especially fast at all, though perhaps the competition is just really good, I have no idea what classification he is in.

I agree the qb threw a real nice ball.

  3. Ok first of all.....

Lay off Grothe for throwing to Amp on the 2 pt conv.  if you have an open wr you expect them to catch it, simple as that.

Imagine if we traded kickers with RU.  This game is 30- 13.  simple as that.

We trade qbs with RU, they win 40-0.

we have grothe for 4 years, blow me RU

I ran a 4.7 40 in high school 2 years ago, maybe I should walk on as a rb...

    or a kicker..

no seriously, can we find no one on campus that can run the football.

    maybe i will enroll......

    just sad

  4. Here are my early observations:

QB:  I cant say enough about the kind of poise that MG has shown.  All this talk about his height and arm strength is drivel.  In a spread offense the advantage of height is mostly nuetralized, and he has

enough velocity on his throws to be a tremendous college qb.  My only worry is that he will be worn down and injured.  Pat has been a hell of a leader standing up for Grothe every step of the way

        Grade: A

RB:  Obviously this is sort of an incomplete as Ponton and Plancher are out, but the guys we have back there are just not BCS material.  I love Williams heart, but I'd rather see Smith get more carries because he is somewhat of a big play threat.  Hopefully Dorsey gets more time because he seems to have by far the most upside of the available backs.

        Grade: D+

WR:  These guys have really stepped up, and there has been surprising turnover since last season.  Ean is one of the quickest players I have seen in a long time, and is really fundamentally sound as well.  Amp Hill's hands are as advertised, and Taurus Johnson will be a monster over the next couple years.  Marcus Edwards is steady as always. Amarri is of course a great athlete but is just not a natural receiver.  The TEs in Bleakly, Hill, and Gordon are a good mix of blocking and recieving ability.

        Grade: A-

OL:   Another position hampered by injuries, but still worrisome.  The much-hyped Jared Carnes has looked like a turnstile out there, and the interior line cant seem to open many holes.  When Thed Watson is in he has looked like a decent NFL prospect, hes just a great athlete.  Overall this is a position we really need to focus on in recruiting..

       Grade: C

DL:   Apparrently both Clebert and Cray are less than 100%, but they still arent really holding up against the interior run.  It seems these two guys are always penetrating so far into the backfield that they often whiff on the runner entirely.  They have a ton of talent, but depth is an issue.  Selvie is obviously a stud, and Buie shows signs of finally fulfilling his potential.  Robinson is a good edge rusher but is too thin to hold up against the run.  Overall this unit has overachieved and should be very good once JJ returns.

        Grade: B-

LB:   These guys are talented and get a lot of hype, but havent seemed to make that many big plays.  Snake in particular has been quiet.  One possible problem is the lack of experienced depth besides Mompremier, and we could really use McCollough and Balloon back here.

         Grade: C

DB:  The CBs look awesome, but are so talented they sometimes take unnecessary risks.  Gilliam and Murphy look good, and Ty Roberts has a ton of upside at nickel.  Burnett is a big hitter but doesnt seem great in coverage (odd since he looks more like a big corner than a SS) and Verpeale has been pretty average.  I would love to see Gachette bulk up and move to LB cause the guy is a hitter and a leader but may eventually be squeezed out at DB by faster guys.  On another note, where the heck has nate allen been?

         Grade: B

Special teams:  Ean is a beast, and thats all I'm gonna say about this.  :(

  5. The difference is that while running as a qb PJ usually has time to get moving because the corners are back covering recievers when he rolls out (god knows why) but when lined up in an I-form he will have to hit the hole at full speed and I think he lacks the suddeness.

I could definately see him used aka ruegger last year and catch some passes in the flat where he could get up speed and truck a few db's.

  6. PJ is too long legged and slow to play rb.  He has good speed when he gets going but it takes a while.  If he had moved a couple years back he could have been a good h-back type.

I agree Denson could be tried at rb, or hill if he was still here (probably to tall though)  The guy I would like to see line up at rb is Ean, and put dorsey in there more to give us some size.

By the way, Ill say it here, Ponton will be back for Rutgers.

  7. We need ponton back.  That being said, I would go with Walt Smith and Dorsey against FIU.  Ben Williams can be a change of pace, and Erskin can bring them all water.

Seriously though Dorsey sounds like a beast.  Wish I could see a tape of his run, I had to listen to the game online  :(
