BCS standings give Auburn fans hope

    By WENDELL BARNHOUSE

    Star-Telegram Staff Writer

You can’t blame Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville for being bitter about the Bowl Championship Series system.

Sunday, he said he doubts that a one-loss Southeastern Conference team will ever make it to the BCS title game. After all, his undefeated team got rooked out of playing in the 2004 national championship game.

But Sunday’s first BCS standings for 2006 should give Auburn fans reason to throw a few more rolls of toilet paper on the trees at Toomer’s Corner.

Ohio State  no surprise  is No. 1. Southern California is No. 2. Michigan is No. 3. Auburn is No. 4, the highest-ranked one-loss team.

A week after losing at home to Arkansas, Tuberville’s Tigers bounced back with a 27-17 victory over Florida on Saturday night. And that victory put Auburn in the thick of the BCS race.

Either Ohio State or Michigan, teams that play each other Nov. 18, are guaranteed of at least one loss. Southern California, which has won its last three games by seven or fewer points, faces a fearsome-foursome end of the season  games with Oregon, California, Notre Dame and crosstown rival UCLA.

The curse of playing in the SEC is that there is no mercy. Every game is a challenge. Just ask Georgia, a home-field loser to Vanderbilt. Or ask Alabama, which needed overtime to beat Ole Miss.

The blessing of playing in the SEC is that the six computers smile on the competitive nature of the league. Auburn is No. 4 in the BCS because it’s No. 5 in the computer rankings. The Tigers are No. 7 in the human polls.

West Virginia and Louisville are ahead of Auburn in the human polls. Those undefeated Big East teams play each other Nov. 2, so one will drop.

West Virginia and Louisville both are behind Auburn in the computer rankings. If either finishes undefeated and Auburn finishes 12-1 as SEC champions, the Tigers could be No. 2 in the BCS standings ahead of an undefeated Big East team.

“After going through what we went through two years ago, I’d hate to think that anybody would get left out of playing for a championship after going undefeated,†Tuberville said. “But it’s got to be a legitimate undefeated.â€Â

He’s talking about West Virginia and Louisville. That’s called planting a seed. Tuberville might not have faith in the BCS system, but he knows how to play the game.
