  1. Bleacher:  Having a basketball facility is certainly part 'keeping up with the Jones' but you have to remember that the guys on the team work on their games year round.  If a player wants to shoot some hoops or work on ballhandling drills at say 10:00 on a Tuesday morning, he may not be able to at USF because the Dome is being set up for a trade show and the Corral is scheduled for some other team.  A facility dedicated to basketball is all hoops 24/7.  It makes a big difference.

  2. Omni:

You're the one that pointed out that all these coaches have agents.  It's possible Woolard contacted Heath's agent.  It's also possible that Woolard is vetting Heath by talking with coaches and ADs first before he makes contact.

At the surface level, where all of us who post on this board reside, Heath does look like a great fit.  I would be happy with him.  But I still trust Woolard to hire the best coach possible.

  3. Randy:  Losing does not make the program a mess.  Losing is part of the challenge.  In basketball, someone has to lose.  It's that simple...there are no ties.  Saying the program is a mess goes beyond the last few years and even decades.  Every other program in the Big East has hoops tradition that goes back to the 40's and 50's...we didn't even exist back then.  Why is it so hard to see the potential in USF for you?  Basketball is a sport where it only takes a couple of key guys and some lucky breaks to turn things around.  Our program is not a 'mess.'  A mess is when there is no talent on the roster and a scandal surrounds the program.  Trust me our program is no mess.  Did we need to make a change in leadership so that we could win more games....absolutely and we are in that process.

USF hoops will be a better product and soon I guarantee it.  Calling us a mess is merely applying the same unoriginal mentality that reporters and so called sages wrote over and over again about Big East football two years ago.

I think it is funny that you attacked McCullom all season long and now that he is fired you're going after the program.  Maybe all year long you should have been attacking the program, not the poor sot that had to coach this messy program.  Or better yet, why don't you take a vacation from attacking anything USF.  What a concept.

  4. So surfer and Mid-Atlantic, do you think USF basketball is a 'mess'?  I don't.  So what if a couple of low watt dudes decided that they didn't have enough Enzyte on their shelves to take us to the next level.  Our situation is not dire and it's not a mess.  Do we have some catching up to do with a bunch of schools that have had basketball tradition even before our university was founded?  Sure, but that does not make us a mess.

When the new coach is hired, if he can keep all the current players on roster and sign the 6 8 guy from HCC, he will have a serviceable team....by far not a mess.  I agree much more with Coach Calhoun.  USF has a lot of potential.  marshall and pelphrey have said what McCullom voiced...the challenge is too big for them.  I trust Mr. Woolard to find a guy who will relish the challenge.

No, we are not a mess.  fennelly is just fennelly.....a geek columnist who has a forum to vent against athletes and athletics.  He, like some who post on this board, are best ignored.

  5. Dang....I hate the Giants' jerseys.  I get jerseys made of Bulls players in the pros, even when they switch teams.  I don't really like the Chiefs jersey that much.  I might just wait out the Giants year and see what Kawicka does next.  I need to get a Thanksgiving Cowboys Henry jersey  and a Frank Davis jersey.  Hopefully JR sticks with the Falcons and Andre makes the main roster in Denver.  And then there is Snake.  Could be an expensive season.

  6. The signing period is the same.  The best players out there are ones like Bozeman that signed in November and ask for their release when the coach they signed with gets fired.  The paper up here said a kid from Indiana State asked for his release and got it.  Too bad he is a 6' 3" 2 guard.

There may be some good transfers from other D-1 schools, but they would not be eligible to play until 2008-9.  The new coach will have to make due.  I want him on the trail of some players for the early signing period in November.
