USF: Safety loses boot

TAMPA - The Bulls have been fortunate not to suffer any significant injuries in the past month, and sophomore safety Danny Verpaele, out since the first week of preseason practice, walked around practice without a boot on his left foot for the first time.

"I don't want to rush him," co-defensive coordinator Rick Kravitz said. "We want to make sure he's 100 percent (before he returns to practice). It could be a week; could be two weeks. He'll be a big part of what we do."

Sophomore defensive end Jarriett Buie, still wearing a boot on his left foot, is recovering as scheduled from his broken leg, hopeful to play Oct.15 at Pittsburgh.

The only other key player injured this season is backup cornerback D'Juan Brown, a senior who has played sparingly due to a sore left hamstring. Coach Jim Leavitt said he expects Brown to play Saturday.

STOPPING BY: Former fullback Clenton Crossley attended practice Thursday and said he'll be trying out for a spot with the Tampa Bay Storm on Tuesday. Crossley said three other Bulls, kicker Santiago Gramatica, linebacker Maurice Jones and receiver Huey Whittaker, also are expected to try out.

At this point, would it be a good idea to redshirt DV?

I was thinking the same thing RTB ... those ankles take some serious time to heal and can be Looong lasting. The position looks good with Williams and Gachette.

Glad Buie will be back "soon" ... need that depth to get playing time at DE ... lose 5 Sr. at this position.

Having Brown back at Corner will help keep us fresh tonight ... sure we'll need it ... and he's experienced.
