He must have done something right to take Kent State to an Elite 8 and Arkansas to two NCAA tournaments. I guess taking three different schools to the NCAA tournament must have been blind luck since clearly you think he can't coach.

I wasn't a huge CSH fan especially towards the end (oh and that "watching the paint dry" excuse for an offense) but don't ignore the facts.

What I'm saying Heath actually was, is what COA wanted to be. A really good recruiter, who scored a bunch of NBA/NBDL/Euro league players at Arkansas and USF, but his wild yearly season coaching record didn't match. The multiple horrible years <12 wins, indicate something missing.

The fact is he has been fired twice, maybe unjustified at Arkansas, and he is not a head coach anywhere currently. So I would assume industry tends to side more with his tournament success is the anomaly and isn't banging down his door. Or he just likes lower assistant pay in Boston. Or he doesn't want to be the guy. Who knows.

The fact that you totally overlooked the loss of RAJ and Robertson, and what they meant to the team, shows you didn't really follow USF basketball back then ...

We absolutely agree, RAJ and Robertson carried Heath's deadweight mightily in that year. I'm probably not the fan you are but I do have game used jersey from the NCAA run. It's sweet with the Selmon memorial and NCAA logo patches.

Yeah, all he lost from the NCAA year was Gilchrist ..... smh.

Coach has the best year in the history of a program like USF, you give him time to build it back up .... especially considering he had just gotten the tools really needed to try and get to the next level. There's little room for error when trying to re-build at a place like here and in 12-13 he lost a key component before he ever got here in Austin and in 14-15 his little "Sunbelt" quality pg just played 8 games. The recruiting was on an uptick considering most of his players that left went on to have decent years elsewhere. Not saying the third year was a lock for marked improvement but the smart move was to at least give him that chance .... a move that looks even smarter now.

Whats all the smh? Gilchrist Sr year in 2011 was his worst season 9pt, 5reb, on 39% shooting. Heath had 4 returning starters that just won 22 games,  with more experience from NCAA, and you think that a 9 win dropoff was warranted due to one guy? Everything in hindsight is "smarter".

Firing Heath was the dumbest move ever. Let's just hope we find  a solid BB coach that can get us moving forward.

The NCAA year he had 22 wins, 12 in Big East. The next year he lost one starter (Gus Gilchrest) and went all the way back to 12 wins, 3-15 in conference. And then he repeated 12 and only 3 in AAC.

Great 2011 season, but he could not coach.

  5. Only two year success Strong has had as HC was because of Teddy Bridgewater's talent. Basically anyone can win with a 1st round NFL QB, see UCF 2013.

CWT coaching record hasn't caught up with his recruiting record. For big schools that already recruit his biggest asset isn't as much value as it is here. One or two conference championships/bowl wins plus beating a few ranked teams and he can write his offer.

  6. Haven't we hated that premise of arguing who can win games long enough? Stop and smell the Flowers.

Almost unbelievable growth, and a great season under his belt. His motion looks like he tries to guide the pass, but I love the QF screw it I'm going deep. He's extending plays, has his head up downfield, and is savvy with the pump fakes.

Hopefully the AW positive approach continues when he becomes eligible backup.

  7. Its been that way since I went to USF in the early 90's.  Got so bad i offered Will McDonald's dad $100.00 if he could get me one of Will's jerseys, which would have been 3x too big anyway.

So true. Even now the UA replicas shorts and jerseys are so cheap compared to price and quality of other nike authentic you can find on fanatics/fans-edge sites.

Ebay has had some nice finds couple times a year. I just got a game used from our NCAA win over Temple just a few weeks ago for $115. Also found a 1997 jersey (yellow throwback to Vitale and UF rocking the sundome) and a reverse-able practice jersey from 2011 NCAA run as well. Had some shorts from the Atkins days with Rocky on the waistband.

  8. Im not expecting much more passing to be put on QF. Sometimes you have to keep it basic while they learn to be a college QB, probably even more in QFs case.

Just for comparison Grothe's first 8 starts average vs Flowers first 5.

    14/23, 179 yards, 1.1 TD/ 1.0 INT, 14 Rushes, 60 yards.

    11/20, 126 yards, 1.2 TD/ 0.8 INT, 11 Rushes, 48 yards.

Granted they need set passing plays for 3rd and long situations, but asking him to throw another 15-20 passes is a recipe for turnover disaster. Hopefully AW will be ready for game 1.

  9. Steve Kragthorpe:

    2007: 6 wins

    2008: 5 wins

    2009: 4 wins

    Charlie Strong

    2010: 7 wins

    2011: 7 wins

    2012: 11 wins

    2013: 12 wins

    Notice 2009 to 2010

2009 to 2010 and then not improving in 2011 (unless you count beating USF). All he did his first year was beat UConn and Rutgers for 6 wins and a Beefs Bowl trip with a QB that had extra year of starting experience. He didn't do much else until a first round QB showed up and got him paid.

A top P5 coordinator isn't some guarantee of success. Or worse for USF just becoming a jump off after 2 years in if it does.

  10. Since the golf team is rocking these days someone else might enjoy having some swag on the course. Ping Hoofer stand bag from 1998 team, asking $75 (based off some ebay completed comps) if anyone is interested. Includes one of the ping headcovers which fit hybrids/small fairway woods. Would have to be shipped from VA which I would just ask actual cost (I already have a boxes so just freight charge). Heres a pic from Scotland when I played and walked courses more. I can get more photos just have to get my dad to send.

  11. Neither Bench nor White are that great

Coach Taggart is currently enamored with Quinton Flowers, which in my mind is why he did not get a higher rated QB in this class.

He played Quinton before he was ready, and will go to him again.

Agree with part 1. But we didnt get a higher rated QB because nobody would want to play for that offense on a terrible team. Lawson was the higher level of QB recruit I expected CWT could appeal to and bring, (a 4-star type that would be "out of our league" currently) but he didnt. Hate to say it but In our standing outside top 100 in cfb world we have to be happy with any QB/position player in the top 50s. Probably lucky Kean stayed committed.

  12. I was at the game today, sat right behind the bench mostly to watch COA interaction and team body language. Don't get to attend or watch many games but here are my quick thoughts.

    1. 100% agree they move the ball around well but it never seems to get a quality or open shot out of it. Weird to say.

    2. Harlan was at the end of the bench and into game. Maybe not too hung over from Bourbon St. Doubt he makes that Tulsa trip.

    3. I liked Holston/Ziegler attitude and effort. They can be D1 starters, Perry will be fine too.

    4. I have a great iphone 6 slow mo of end of regulation volleys if anyone wants it. lol.

    5. The brothers bench just looks like a Fredo Corleone thing. Im sure its happened elsewhere but it just looks odd since they look like twins.

    6. COA carries himself as a head coach, walks the bench keeping players heads in game. Down 10 his reaction to players didn't waiver from confidence.

  13. Chapter 3 of the highly rated QBs to say nevermind. Following Bridgewater and Woulard. Hope he likes Blacksburg.

    http://www.gobblercountry.com/2015/1/4/7492315/4-star-quarterback-dwayne-lawson-chooses-virginia-tech

The Hokies received another huge commitment Sunday night when 4-star quarterback Dwayne Lawson announced his decision to attend Virginia Tech at the 2015 Semper Fidelis All-American game.

Lawson recently de-committed from Miami after having a change of heart, possibly influenced by the emergence of stud freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya.

The consensus 4-star prospect chose Tech over finalists Ole Miss and South Florida.

  14. We can bring him back. Someone get the kickstarter running for the bigger than life-size bronze statue. I'll start going through vintage tape to get his exact GPS coordinates from old Tampa Stadium where he called our first TD play so it can be placed correctly. Everyone can gather in a circle before games to hope for return.

If theres any money left over we can approach Outback on starting a Leavitts franchise.
