  1. holy crap, maybe i'm getting old, but has the term "road trip" died somewhere?

heck yeah...stuff like this is what credit cards were made for!

and in SG's defense-they did advertise the student package in the Oracle. I know it's not a good excuse but with Christmas coming I know a lot of students who wanted to go but didn't have the spare money (even with credit cards).

  2. you wouldnt GET the tickets until thursday but you would still have the same priority as if you bought them at the same time...

in fact...thru USF your seats would be better.

I wouldn't have been able to even order them till the end of the week--therefore my tickets i have now are in a much better section/row than they would have been.

..and I only wish I was joking.  :-[

  3. The Oracle shouldn't be "in business" to make lots of money - and I've seen the yearly operating budget - they make LOTS of money.

this is the first year that we've been completely independent from SG's help...so maybe you've looked at the records from last year but it's different now and we have to actually cover our costs.

So if we start making exceptions for the athletic department and give them free advertisement, shouldn't we do it for SG and Parking services since they serve the students too.....? where do we draw the line? who decides who "gets a deal"?

The only thing affordable for most organizations is a 1/8 page in black and white.

    according to whom.....?

anyways i was just giving my opinion on what the athletics department could do to reach the students in order to increase attendance to sporting events…but I’m a marketing major what the hell do I know?

If you’d like to talk about it further faza you can IM me..i don't want this thread to turn into petty bickering

  4. Amber, I hate to tell you this, but the Oracle charges way too much money for its advertisements. It will print nice, full page color for articles like Montage (sp?) which only draw the casual reader, yet it will charge hundreds of dollars for a USF-based organization to do the same for a single day. I understand the Oracle has costs - but when it makes the kind of yearly money (around a million dollars, if I remember correctly, though I probably don't and you can correct me) that it does (which is part of the reason the SG stopped funding it), I think the Oracle could afford to cut a break to Athletics in the name of school spirit and donation in order to get the word out about sport events and Bowl Games.

Since the Oracle doesn't do this, Athletics looks for more cost-effective ways to get the word out. Besides, if the Oracle really cared, they could print up whatever advertisements they want on their own.

    1. Our rates are a LOT cheaper than St. Pete times and the Tribune, and the athletics department DOES "get a break" since they do get an on campus rate (which is really cheap) for being an on-campus org.

    2. It isn't our job to market this bowl game for the athletics department-we have a BUSINESS to run. We had 2 stories last week and also had a thing on the top of the sports page every day last week.

    3. I'm not here to argue whether or not you like our newspaper the point is is that the athletics department isn't marketing to the students and they're gonna wanna know why the student's didn't show up to the game on the 31st.

the St Pete Times is located on EVERY corner on campus....for FREE.

and i bet you $100 more people read the Oracle over the St. Pete Times...

To think, that someone should have to PAY THEM to get the word out that our Bulls are in their first ever bowl game?

PAY for advertisement. It's a travesty that the Oracle isn't rushing to do it on its own. As a matter of fact, I'm going to write some E-mails to a few folks about this.....

...you're kidding right? heaven forbid you PAY for a service/product.....

  5. I work for The Oracle and we've tried numerous times to get the athletic department to advertise with us--only until last week did they advertise for a basketball game (once) and for the bowl game (once).

Everytime we talk to them they say how they can get FREE advertisement in the St. Pete Times---you find me a student who reads that on a daily (or even weekly) basis.

They even did a story on NBC news and interviewed students and they were talking about why students don't support the team (like UM, FSU etc) and one girl was saying how they never even know what team they're playing because they don't advertise/market to students.

...and they'll wonder why not many students show up to the game
