I am not sure what that is but @Griggsy, it's been a long time.  A very long time.  Good to see you.  I hope you are well.  And it looks like you're still a USF guy.  I hope you stick around.

Hi Brad, yes it has been a very long time, though  it doesn't necessarily feel like it. 17 years since I discovered USF and thebullspen.com. It was when we were first invited to the Big East. I enrolled at USF and graduated with a BA in 2008. I moved to Tallahassee in 2012 so I'm no longer a season ticket holder (and now have kids, etc) but I still love USF.  Admittedly, I had to separate myself emotionally somewhat after CJL was fired and the Holtz New Era was faltering. I'm more of a casual fan now, even moreso with the NIL/conference realignment stuff going on that I don't like,  but I like to check in on y'all from time to time :)   I see from this thread several familiar names are still around.

And yes this post was just a phone game where I was using USF Bulls as my screen name, and I made it to the #2 spot. I thought it was fitting though I guess it confused some folks. Sorry 'bout that 😂

  2. Anyone know where I can find a recording of the spring game?

Work hasn't allowed me to spend much time to follow football. I'm trying to get caught up and want to go back and watch the USF Spring Game. I cannot for the life of me find it on YouTube or elsewhere. Was there a licensing issue so that it's not publicly available?

    Go Bulls

  3. Thanks @Brad , nice to see you again!  I don't post much anymore but I stalk around in here every once in a while and see some familiar names. I announced on here when I first became a Bulls fan in 2005. It's been 13 years since then, and 10 since I became an alumnus. Crazy how time flies.

  4. ... will be as empty as everyone thinks.

I know the die-hard loyals on here have seen fans come and go. And to some degree, the sentiment about Tampa fans only supporting winners probably has some truth to it.

    However, I don't think we'll ever see pre-WVU 07 attendance numbers again.

Here's why:  I think most people were simply just ignorant about USF football. USF wasn't really perceived "big time" by the casual fan. People place their identity into their team, to some extent, and no one wants to feel "inferior" to the popular school fans.  In the mind of much of the nation, USF has now "arrived".

This season has and will forever change the perception of USF football. Mark my words, you think USF has reached the top?  We're nowhere near where we're going to be in the next 10-15 years.

There will be an attendance drop, and I forsee the student ticket frenzies not being quite as rabid. But I guarantee you we bring 50k to every remaining home game this year.

    Am I right or wrong?

  5. Don’t change the subject. You agreed with grouper that the ATF would set up a special "sting" in order to obtain an high profile arrest (that being matt grothe). That is undoubtedly not what happen.

Certified govt employee, congrats. I'm assuming you also think that because you have 343 post, all of your statements have more credibility then mine.

Back to my point, ATF makes bust like these every night, its nothing special. ATF are regulars at all the bars scenes in tally, with arrest nightly. Were they targeting some big wigs as well? What about all of my acquaintances who have been or know someone who has been arrested by the ATF? They hot shots too? Fact is there is no way in hell for you to "undoubtfully" decide the arresting agency picked out grothe in order to boost their image.

No, my statements have more credibility than yours because you apparently failed at reading comprehension back in grade school.

-The government, as a general rule, CAN and DOES target high profile individuals. That's not to say that being a "hot shot" is a prerequisite for arrests as you seem to imply in your post

-My gut instict was that this was case in MG's arrest. Triple B's post made me doubt. Does that constitute "changing the subject". I guess what' you're saying is that a person, when introduced to additional facts, cannot change their assessment?

-And can you "undoubtedly" PROVE that the arrest was NOT targeting MG in particular? Until you can, you're comments are just as speculative and unfounded as you accuse mine of being.

Why do I not find it surprising that you have alot of "acquaintences" who have been arrested?  ;D

  6. I feel bad for Matt that some low-life federal agency wanted to make a name for itself by harassing a college football player.

Actually, it was a state agency...but your point is still valid. I can't help but wonder if he was being "targeted" so they could get a high-profile bust. Actually, I don't wonder at all -- that is undoubtedly what happened.

You are kidding me right? ATF patrols all of the bars with the same tactics. Do you honestly believe they pick out high priority targets? Assuming they even care about Matt (which they dont)? Get real.

I kid you not my friend. You're talking to a certified gob'ment employee and I know how the system works.  Triple B's points (it was a week ago) and the fact there were strings of arrests in the same area/same time frame lead me to believe that this (perhaps) wasn't the case this time.  But you're asking if I think the govenrnment picks out high-visibility targets? Are you saying they don't, because I don't think you really want to go down that road.  Who are you again?

  7. Since it happened a week ago, I sincerely doubt it was done for a high-profile bust. It would have been leaked immediately by your theory.... plus, do you really think more than a handful of local law enforcement officers even know who he is? This isn't G'ville and Leak you're talking about.

And these sting type operations things DO occur on a regularbasis to try and catch people selling liquor to minors.

    Good points, actually.

  8. They do this at every bar in Tampa. Believe it or not, Matt Grothe is not some kind of celebrity around this town. He might be to USF football fans, but that's a small percentage of the community as a whole.

I assure you, the state agencies do stings at every bar in the area, as does the Hillsborough Sheriff's Department. This had nothing to do with anything but Matt Grothe breaking the first law of bartending.

If you don't like that law enforcement agencies enforce the law, perhaps you ought to try and get it changed, or at least strip some of the power from the organization that pushes for these investigations: MADD.

I said nothing about not liking that the agencies enforce the law, but you cannot sit there and tell me straight-faced that the goverment doesn't make some amount of effort to conduct "high-profile" arrests. It's their way of getting the most "bang for the buck". (ie who cares of Joe Nobody is arrested, but Matt Grothe?)

I don't doubt that the agency does conduct other arrests, but you make it sound as if there is a huge dragnet of arrests in the area and Matt was picked up as part of a larger operation.  I don't think this was the case (unless you have proof?)

And believe me, as a Libertarian, I'm not fan of "victimless crimes," so I think the charges are bogus anyway. Perhaps there are some MADD lobbyists partially to blame, but mostly we can thank those politicians who believe they can "legislate morality".

The bottom line is that I'm glad this happened.  It was relatively minor, and it teaches Matt (and other members of the team hopefully) the amount of scrutiny they're under, so hopefully they may avoid similar (more major) mistakes in the future.
