  1. SOUTH FLORIDA

    Spring practice starts/game: March 20/April 14

    OFFENSE

    1. The attack must develop balance with QB Matt Grothe's passing and sterling newcomer RB Mike Ford's running.

    2. Grothe's backup must be found.

    3. Line depth must be developed.

    DEFENSE

    1. LB Ben Moffitt's return helps, but cohorts Stephen Nicholas and Pat St. Louis are gone. That's lots of talent and leadership to replace.

    2. DE George Selvie and LB Chris Robinson enjoyed standout debuts, so the staff must keep them grounded, focused and hungry. 3. This unit always is looking to develop depth. And that'll be no different this spring.

    Josh Julmiste Dismissed

Skip directly to the full story.

By BRETT MCMURPHY The Tampa Tribune

    Published: Feb 13, 2007

TAMPA University of South Florida starting sophomore defensive end Josh Julmiste, who was suspended from the Bulls' first six games after a second failed drug test, has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules, USF assistant athletic director John Gerdes said Tuesday.

In August, Julmiste told the Tribune he had failed a second drug test. According to USF's substance abuse policy, a third positive test results in an athlete losing their remaining eligibility at USF and they are removed from scholarship.

Julmiste could not be reached for comment.

After serving a six-game suspension last fall for his second positive test, Julmiste played in USF's remaining seven games, including starting the Bulls' final six contests. The 6-foot-6, 275-pounder had 23 tackles, 361/27 sacks and four quarterback hurries. His three forced fumbles were second most for the Bulls.

Julmiste, the younger brother of senior quarterback Pat Julmiste, also started one game as a freshman.

Of USF's three starters who were suspended from the first six games of last season, Julmiste and wide receiver Jackie Chambers have been dismissed for a violation of team rules.

  4. Which Division I football conference had the most percentage of running plays last season? The “three yards and a cloud of dust†Big Ten? Nope, guess again. Surprisingly, it was the Big East. According to cfbstats.com, Big East teams ran the ball a national-high 57.7 percent of the time in 2006.

The second most ground oriented conference was the Sun Belt (57.6 percent), followed by the Mountain West (56.4), Mid-American (55.3), ACC (54.5), SEC (54.1), WAC (53.0), Big Ten (52.9), Conference USA (52.7), Pac-10 (51.8) and Big 12 (51.8). By comparison, in 2005, Big East teams ran the ball 59.5 percent of the time, which ranked second nationally to the Sun Belt (59.7).

In 2006, USF ran 55.68 percent of the time, which was substantially down from running 65.64 percent of the time in Andre Hall’s senior year in 2005. With the addition of heralded RB Mike Ford this fall, expect the Bulls’ run percentage to increase from last season.

Ford already getting attention.  Nice.  Hope he lives up to the hype.

  5. So sad...

TAMPA – University of South Florida freshman running back Keeley Dorsey collapsed while lifting weights at the school's athletic facility Wednesday afternoon and died. Dorsey was 19 years old.

Dorsey is a graduate of Tallahassee Lincoln High School. The school is expected to release a statement and more information later today.

USF police spokesman Mike Klingebiel confirmed at 1:45 p.m. today, responding to a medical emergency, Tampa Fire Rescue transported a student to University Community Hospital.

USF President Judy Genshaft and athletic director Doug Woolard will hold a 4:45 p.m. press conference to discuss the tragedy.

  6. WOW!  Good thing we didn't land him, and miss out on Grothe!!

    Counterfeiting investigation focuses on Perrilloux

    http://www.thetowntalk.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070112/SPORTS/701120340/1006

BATON ROUGE -- The federal criminal investigation that includes LSU reserve quarterback Ryan Perrilloux is focused on counterfeiting in the LaPlace area and is ongoing, a St. John Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman said Thursday.

"It is a joint investigation by the Secret Service and our office," said Mike Tregre, a public information officer for the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office. "The FBI is also involved. It is still being actively investigated even as we speak."

Perrilloux, a redshirt freshman, is from LaPlace, which is 25 miles west of New Orleans in St. John Parish. He was one of the nation's most sought after recruits while playing for East St. John, which is five miles from LaPlace in Reserve.

The U.S. Secret Service, which has an office in New Orleans, operates within the U.S. Treasury Department and among its chief duties is stopping counterfeiting.

"They handle financial investigations -- money," Tregre said.

FBI spokesperson Sheila Thorne in New Orleans referred questions about Perrilloux to the Secret Service office in New Orleans, which did not return calls.

"We're not looking at that," Thorne said when asked about Perrilloux. "That would be the Secret Service office."

Tregre and East St. John High football coach Larry Dauterive said federal investigators interviewed Perrilloux at the St. John Parish Sherriff's Office for about two hours late last week after LSU beat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3.

Dauterive said the interview was about a rejected $20 bill at a convenience store in LaPlace last November.

Perrilloux's cell phone was not receiving calls on Thursday.

Dauterive said he spoke to Baton Rouge attorney Nathan Fisher, who is representing Perrilloux, on Thursday, and Fisher said Perrilloux is not the only person in the LaPlace area under federal investigation.

"Fisher said, 'Oh no, it's not just Ryan,'" Dauterive said.

Fisher has not returned calls to his office and home.

Dauterive said he had not heard of any other LSU football players involved in the investigation.

"I just don't believe Ryan would be involved in something like this," Dauterive said. "Everybody knew JaMarcus was going pro after this season. Ryan was telling me all season that next season would be his chance. Something like this could ruin his career if it's true."

LSU starting quarterback JaMarcus Russell announced on Wednesday that he was leaving school a year early to enter the NFL draft. LSU coach Les Miles said at the same press conference that Perrilloux and Flynn would compete for LSU's starting quarterback job.

"I know he wouldn't do something like this with that on the horizon," Dauterive said.

Miles said at that press conference that he knew nothing of Perrilloux's involvement in any investigation.

But Dauterive said he spoke to Miles early this week about the fact that Perrilloux was interviewed by federal officials last week.

"I talked to Les about it on Tuesday," Dauterive said. "We talked about how he had been interviewed. We both felt that Ryan was in the clear."

  7. Mutt sorry that you can't make.  We all know that you are a superfan.  I actually told someone that last night about you while flipping through some pictures of this years games.

I didn't think I was going to make it until Tonald and Jonald surprised me with a flight and a ticket to the game just this week!  Now I'm lucky enough to go with them to the game via the USF chartered flight.

We will certainly miss you this year but it is understandable!

How many days to the Spring Game?  :)
