TAMPA - Alabama landed the coach it wanted. Now Nick Saban must see if he can obtain one of the most coveted high school football players of this year's recruiting class: Plant senior quarterback Robert Marve.

The Tide officially named Saban as Mike Shula's coaching replacement Wednesday. He reportedly received an eight-year contract worth $32 million in guaranteed money.

However, it will take more than a recognizable name for Marve to honor the verbal commitment he made to Alabama during the summer.

"The one thing Coach Shula and his staff did was treat me like their No. 1 draft pick. They saw me as their top guy. I don't know how Coach Saban sees me," Marve said. "Alabama did get the guy they wanted, and they are expecting him to turn around the program. It's really exciting to see him named as coach."

Marve turned his attention away from Alabama once Shula was fired and is entertaining other offers.

Miami has made a late surge for Marve and the Hurricanes are running even with Alabama. Marve and Plant High coach Robert Weiner visited the Miami campus Wednesday, even though they were not allowed to speak with coaches during the NCAA's current dead period. Marve is attending the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl in Fort Lauderdale today, and though originally slated to participate, decided to rest after a long season.

Marve is waiting on a possible offer from Florida State. Weiner said the Seminoles have only nine available scholarships, and coaches are unsure whether they need to sign a quarterback.

South Florida also remains a strong contender, but Marve probably won't use one of his five official visits on the Bulls because of his familiarity with the program. Also considered: Hawaii, Purdue and Maryland.

Essentially, Saban will have to recruit Marve, who threw for 4,343 yards and 48 TDs, and was named Class 4A Player of the Year."For sure, I'm going to take five visits. I plan to visit Alabama, and now I get a chance to meet their players and make sure I'm a good fit," Marve said. "The biggest thing I want to feel is that I'm a college's No. 1 guy. It's not to say I don't think I need to play and earn my spot, but I want to be at a program where I'm really wanted."

Saban's hiring did a lot to soothe the concerns of Middleton defensive back Sherod Murdock, who verbally committed to play for Alabama.

Murdock said he is enthusiastic about Saban's commitment to defense and is looking forward to meeting him.

"I want to sit down, talk to him, and get to know the man [i've seen] on TV. Seeing him in person will probably be different than talking to him on the phone," said Murdock, who has never spoken with Saban. "I want to get to know him and see if he's a cool coach to be around, and how he interacts with his players."

Murdock's top choice is still Alabama, but he has scheduled an official visit to Kansas and is very interested in Pittsburgh and West Virginia.

  2. Started after every single basketball game that we lose about how bad RMC is?  It's getting to a point where every single thread on this board is about that.  Enough is enough, do we all know that the basketball team is struggling, yes but lets stop beating a dead horse here.

If you don't like RMC that is fine but stop talking trash about the team, these players are trying their best and they haven't done anything to deserve the type of smack talking everyone is laying on them.

Until DW makes a change, RMC is our coach, there is nothing that we can do about it.  Deal with it.

  3. TAMPA - It's not Krzyzewskiville, but as ticket-line tent cities go, you could call it perhaps Leavitt-town.

USF purchased 500 $30 tickets for the Papajohns.com Bowl to give to the first 500 students at the Sun Dome ticket office Wednesday morning, and the line started forming at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, when junior Alan Fereiras and friends set up camp for the night as the Bulls men's basketball team still played inside.

"It was just a cool idea to have fun with everyone, a great experience," said Fereiras, who stayed warm next to a barbecue grill. "I was happy the school did it for us. For all the support we've given them, they're giving back to us. It's pretty neat."

By 9 a.m., when tickets were distributed, the line was about 300 long. As it turns out, students didn't need to camp out. By 9:35, there was no line, with about 150 seats unclaimed, and at 3 p.m., there were tickets available.

USF associate athletic director Tom Veit said more than 3,000 tickets have been sold in the first three days, well ahead of last year's pace for the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. The Bulls have been allotted 10,000 tickets and hope to improve on the 6,200 sold last season.

  4. My post was a sarcastic one to the person who started the thread as in DUH why would USF put a limit on tickets, when we may sell 2000 if we are lucky.  The thread makes no sense and how someone would even consider that is way beyond me.

Do you always have to be an a$$hole.  It was a simple question that apparently other people have asked.

You must have a lot of faith in USF if you think only 2000 people will show.  Great school spirit there.

  5. Ken's not leaving Tampa anytime soon... but it would be **** nice if they gave him some love with a facility that would be tops in the state, if not the nation. We host tourney's every year... our facilities should be in line with the UofA facility. If you build it, they will come. People will watch USF softball if the digs are nice... mark my word. People at USF like winners. The softball team has a penchant for winning. Throw in some new digs, and the casual fan will bring their daughter to the game. You may think I'm crazy for saying that... but we could easily draw a 1,000 fans to a weekend game if marketed the right way. You gotta bullieve!

Hey Terry, UofA's facilities is not what we want.  It's not that nice.  Take a look at Louisville's softball complex.  That's what we want.  They have a nice set up there.  Arizona's isn't that great.  Open aired Press box, bleachers, nothing great.  UofL, indoor air conditioning press box, all chairback seats.  Believe me, that is the stadium Ken is going to copy.
