  1. First, the FIU defense played well and with intensity. Then we learned that Walt Smith et al are not the short-term answer at RB. We continue to commit the stupidest penalties in America (a blocking penalty at the FIU 5 on the first Randolph return???!!!)

Second, it was not a well-called game on our side and Strock took us to school over and over.

We did find some more gems tonight: Taurus Johnson, George Selvie, Louis Gachette.

  2. Just a few points...

There actually is gold on those baseball uniforms, just not a lot of it. The numbers and U are outlined thinly with the USF metallic gold.

It's a rare appearance for gold on the baseball unis, though. It's my understanding that Cardieri prefers the green and white look and for years there was no gold at all on any baseball uni.

The baseball and at least some of the softball unis are made by Speedline, which is headquartered in Tampa. I know that Cardieri likes the convenience of having a hometown supplier.

Speedline has two main numeral fonts: block and the one currently on the softball and baseball home whites (I believe this was the old Rowdies style numbers and our soccer teams have used these as well.) Then it will offer some specialty fonts like the ones on the baseball greens.

As far as a uniform numeral font goes, there are universities that have named fonts. Miami, UConn and Kentucky have them, but Notre Dame, Texas and Stanford don't -- at least they don't have them listed with Liebe, which is a major numeral and letter supplier. I guess someone needs to invent something original if we want our own.

  3. If and when the new mall is finished at I-75 and SR 56, then we'll see whether University Mall can keep afloat. It would seem that an area like Tampa can only support a certain number of malls at one time.

If University loses stores and customers, then it is logical and essential that USF buys the property, whether for a stadium or campus/research expansion. The mall also includes the road that leads from the east side of the mall to the campus entrance by the botanical gardens, I've been told.

So while USF may have no plans at this point, it would be extraordinarily short-sighted not to think about what may happen when and if the new mall opens.

  4. Though it's not online yet, Mark Lennox's column points out that Ashley Burns did not show for his photo opportunity and indeed was hightailing it back to O-town in the fourth quarter.

    Gutless UCF welsher. How typical.

Ashley, here's a lesson from Betting 101. If you wager and lose, you pay the bet. You pay it before you pay the rent, before you buy food for your kids, before anything. If this is unacceptable, then DON'T BET.

  5. Ty Pryor, signee, in the 27th to Milwaukee.

    Mike Macaluso, 29th to Toronto.

Ryan Koch, 32nd (I think) to Los Angeles.

Pryor's almost certain to pass on this offer. He's an excellent student.

Macaluso is a great story. He came here -- somebody told me that he wasn't really D1 material -- and worked hard to improve himself. He was good enough to scare off two good middle infielders who went to Georgia and Florida Atlantic who saw a lot of bench time in their futures.

Koch was a fall signee but was probably going juco anyway. A lot of times, the pros will talk signees into changing their minds with the notion that they'll get drafted in a year or two...

For example, Robert Coello, who reneged last year to go to Okaloosa-Walton. He went in round 26 this year.
