Remember, QF wasn't QF when he started...

What I saw of McClain is that he ran the offense like QF as a junior/senior. He looked off a DB with a pump fake and hit the receiver over the top just the same as when QF  would shoulder pump fake to MVS and then hit him over the top on a hitch and go.
Now I know there’s no way he’s QF ready now but he had a much better command of the offense in the little action he had than Quinton flowers did as a freshman.

  2. Far more USF talk on 98.7 than ever before on Tampa radio, at least in the last 12 yrs. lets not alienate talk show hosts on the only station to go out of its way to support our university. Best way to improve things is to continue to call with insightful comments to keep USF in the discussion and convince the station's hosts that the audience tunes in for Bulls talk. That is where the money talks- where advertising dollars go. Wanna help this problem, call in as much as they let us.

  3. Not sure about that.  Blackwell in his Junior and Senior years was better than Matt right now.  No offense to MG, but I'm sure Leavitt would agree.

I disagree on so many levels it's not even funny.

No respect to MB, but he shone like a superstar against 1-AA talent and had the occasional "Game of his Life" against 1-A teams.

MG consistently wins at not only the 1-A level, but the upper echelon of the 1-A level.

To try and compare MB and MG is an apples and oranges proposition.  But let's not forget that against a 1-A team as a freshman, MG obliterated a single-game passing record that Marquel established as a senior (I believe) against a 1-AA team.

Let's be accurate. Blackwell beat I-AA with I-AA. He also beat I-A with I-AA. He won our first game against a ranked opponent (Bowling Green).

And, unless I am mistaken, set the record for passing in a single game against Pitt as a 20+ point underdog. Grothe broke the record against a very bad Syracuse team. More importantly, Blackwell was in the top 10 in the country in TD to Int ratio and went something like 150 passes without an interception. As I can't find the archive for stats on Gousfbulls.com, I can't give exact figures.

Grothe has done some very amazing things and has the potential to surpass all of Blackwell's accomplishments but he only has a single year of production under his belt. He threw way too many interceptions. I feel, as many of you do, that he will be the best we have ever seen wear the green and gold but there are a lot of things that have to go right for that.

Blackwell, like Barnhardt will always have a place in USF history for their accomplishments.

  4. still some bizzare plays though, 35 years of watching football and I can't recall ever seeing a team fake a field goal in order to punt.....and a time out called to set that up on top of it.

The timeout was a bit bizarre, but the actual call was a good one. Better to try and pin them deeper in their territory than to risk having another miss, which would have been highly probable with out kicking game.

I don't disagree with the decision to punt instead of going for a field goal but I just don't see the need to fake it. Our problems have stemmed from innacurate kicking and poor punting, neither of which is correctable by the fake.....as demonstrated by the way the kick went sailing long into the endzone.

Overall I'd say he made some decent calls yesterday but that one was just bizzare IMO

I believe the FG line up causes the defense not to have a punt returner, just like a QB quick punt. Obviously the goal was to down the ball deep but execution was poor. I like the call.

As for the Hook and Lateral, not a bad idea but not necessary at that part of the field, moving the ball like we were.  I give Rod Smith a lot of credit for yesterday and I give Leavitt a great deal of credit for the punting game. Once opponents figured out dropping 2-3 people to cover the punt would counteract the rugby style punt, we put in the fake. It was a great move.

  5. I remember that Kevin similarly seemed overpowered and tackled poorly during his career but in the last year or two, he became a very valuble safety and a good tackler. I imagine we will see the same with Danny, it may just take some time. Currently, with the luxury of great LB's and corners, giving DV more experience isn't as much of a liability as it could be and will only let him develop faster.

  6. I spoke with Craig earlier: they are not NIKE. They are modelled after the originals but are not the authentic Nike jersey. Having said that, Craig said they will look just like them but without the Nike swoosh and I am not sure the fabric will be the same that Nike uses for authentic jerseys.

I also asked about white jerseys and he said that he hadn't thought about that but will ask if the batch can be split into green and white. They will all be #8.

By the way, he said that he was sending the design to be approved by the manufacturer (I think he said CLC).

  7. I found out from the Athletic Dept and from the folks at Bulls Heaven what the deal is regarding authentic Nike USF football jerseys. As it turns out, Nike (or the Nike representative for our region) isn't interested in making them available for retail, apparently. Well the regional rep, Steve Wilson, is actually located in Gainesville.

If anyone is interested in getting one, or just feels that USF should have these available for retail like most other schools, feel free to email the rep and let him know how you feel. I just did.

    EDIT:

The rep apparently was getting inundated with responses and asked to have his email address removed from this board. His first reply to me was:

"Unfortunately none are offered this first year on the field with USF - However, you may find replica jerseys at many retail outlets in the area.

    Thanks for your interest.

    SW.

I then heard from the folks at Bulls Heaven...

I spoke to Steve – he wants his email address taken off the message board  Can you

    help me with this?

Steve says Nike will gladly make the product -  there is a 9 month window from the time

the order is placed, and there has to be an order of 360 units – that’s why he thinks the soonest

we could get authentics would be next season.  So, it’s NOT that Nike doesn’t want

the jersey available for retail – they do – they just need the orders.  So we need to take the

bull by the horns and start taking presales, and see if we can get to the magic number of 360!

I think we can do it.

Thus, I have removed the email address. Just for the record: they don't make authentic jerseys, just the replicas so far.

    END EDIT.
