  1. According to Insider's Maurice was at football practice this morning. No word on whether he boxed anyone.  ;D

USFnation.com brings you Monday’s practice report straight from the field. It was back to work as usual following Saturday’s full scrimmage. Some of the guys were dragging a bit today, but the coaches emphasized the importance of every practice. Read on for a full report. Also in our photo gallery you can get your first look at transfer Maurice Charles in action.

  2. Actual quote:

"We're feeling pretty good about our first team," coach Jim Leavitt said . "That's about it. ... I know our quarterback situation. It's a two-man deal, with (freshman) Carlton ( Hill) getting a number of reps also."

Junior Pat Julmiste and sophomore Courtney Denson will split reps today in what is now a close two-man race for the opening starting nod at quarterback. Leavitt said Hill will play at quarterback and/or receiver in the Sept. 3 opener at Penn State.

All three then played QB in the scrimmage on Saturday.

Denson and/or Hill can be used just like Fisher when Julmiste is in. There are even scenarios with all three players on the field at the SAME time.

  3. Leavitt doesn't mind playing Freshmen in general as we played a ton of them last year. We have 70 Freshmen and Sophs on our roster THIS year, so expect a lot more Freshmen to play again.

I don't think that Leavittt has ever played a TRUE freshmen at QB. Marquel Blackwell  first played as a redshirt freshman and kept the job.

I think Julmiste is on a pretty short leash. He'll most likely split time with Denson at the beginning with Hill making a bigger push at QB later in the season. Denson has already been at USF a year while Hill is just coming in now.

Many of us would like to see Grothe play QB as he's probably more polished at the position than Hill coming out of HS, but it looks like he will redshirt.

We also have another transfer QB from Indiana sitting out this year, and might be getting another one Pat Carter from Georgia Tech, but that's still up in the air.

As far as predictions, I think we have an outside shot at having a wining record, but I wouldn't put any money on it.

  4. "Denson was ranked #5 Qb recruit in FL"

Actually Super Prep had him ranked #5 QB NATIONALLY. #60 player in country overall.

Grothe came in #2 in Mr Florida Football balloting this year so he's no slouch either. He just missed out on being #1 in the closest race they ever had.

As for Carlton Hill, Miami wanted him desperately but WE beat them out for him.

I expect to see Julmiste, Denson and Hill all play QB in our opener at PSU. Hill will at least be in that game playing some position as he's too good an athlete to sit as a freshman.

  5. Woohoo... nice pug too.

I mentioned it yesterday in an other thread, but you must have missed it even though YOU posted there:

    Uh Oh!

    I know NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTHING!

Hack attack has Bulls first in Big East

I've got to give credit where it's due: some Bulls fan has written a pretty good little poll-hacking program in the last day or two.

That ESPN.com "SportsNation" Big East poll referenced here just yesterday is now insanely high on USF -- the Bulls, thanks to some shall-we-say ardent voting in the past day, have passed Louisville as the preseason champ, with more than 35 percent of the vote; running back Andre Hall has double the votes of any other offensive player, as does linebacker Stephen Nicholas in the defensive voting.

There's some kind of Florida-voting joke here, but just to check the math: of the first 5,000 or so votes cast, about 100 had USF first. Of the next 6,000 or so, more than 4,000 had the Bulls winning the Big East.

Now I'd never underestimate the ability for fans like the ones at thebullspen.com to mobilize themselves, even for a little online balloting ... maybe that (closed) scrimmage Saturday really turned some heads?

  6. I heard Gruden say in a post-game radio interview that the punt return team was 'horrible' (or a word to that effect).  I pretty certain that it had to do with the fact they had a penalty on about every play, negating good individual play by D-Rube.

Gruden had some nice things to say about him during the game, but pointed out the stupid penalties. Also, after the game a couple of the TV commentator's said they thought Rubin had done himself enough good to make the team. I guess we will find out pretty soon.

  7. No my intent was not to set an ultimatum.  I asked a question to see how board members felt.  Personally, if he has a couple of .500 seasons in the Big East he stays.  I'm a season ticket holder since day one and only want to see the Bulls win.  Some times one has to make tough decisions to grow a program.

Well, I'll just let this die.

There have been many threads on this throughout the year and some of us right now would just like the season to begin already.

Here are several related in the last 60 days:

3 page thread Re: is Leavitt qualified for Big East. Started 7/3

I didn't go back any further. I know there are lengthy threads dealing with the specific subject: What will it take to get Leavitt fired.
