  1. I wrote this season off a year ago when we signed Tags. I like him far more than Skip and let's be honest the program Skip left to Tags was a fricking mess. Minimal high level talent and probably some character concerns too. With new staff and a new system I'm willing to give Willie T some time. He needs to find the right players for his scheme.

This season hurts but I do think we'll see a turnaround in recruiting and in quality of play. If UCF can be successful there's little doubt USF can as well. Step off the ledge, the good news is theres nowhere to go but up...

  2. This thread is a perfect example of the direction of thebullspen.  Someone posts something funny and others have to get technical and start an argument.

My bad, I figured a little levity would be good and instead I inspired some threadshitting. It's all good...

  3. Building the foundation is the step we're on to reaching the stratosphere.

If it wasn't for Judy's vigorous effort to reach AAU, the University wouldn't be close to where it is in regards to the improvements that have been made since I graduated in 2007.

Hell, I got a Chem E degree in 4 years with a 3.0+ GPA and I don't think I could even get in to the University at this point.

Will we make AAU, I'd say it's unlikely,  but there's no fault in making it a lofty target.  We're a lot closer than we were even 5/6 years ago when I left.

I've only been in Tampa for 6 years and finished Grad work at USF recently.  It's good to hear they've made progress...

  4. The intent of these lists be it Forbes or US News is solely to sell magazines.  The unfortunate part is that the public does value the opinions expressed in them.

With that all said, USF has some problems.  The graduation rate needs improving, the ratio of Grad students to Undergrads isnt comparable to more reputable Universities, those PhD's that USF does produce are not in demand by other reputable Universities and lastly Judy and crew need to accept that USF will never be an AAU member.

I'm confident that the University has nowhere to go but up, but I think we should be focused on building a foundation before reaching for the stratosphere.

  5. Yikes, not many econ and finance majors in this thread.

A few points, USF is by no means unable to meet its current debt obligations.  The $30M used to build the athletic village included major donations and also took on NO money from the state.  The reality is a considerable part of the tuition generated from students right now is paying for the athletic village.  Shhhh, its a poorly kept secret.  Unless you predict a significant decrease in enrollment I wouldnt worry about the ability to pay for the village too much at this time.

My concern is that the BE/NCAA contributed some $7M per year to the USF athletics budget which accounts for 20% of its total funding.  The $20M+ from the BE will go a long way toward building the program assuming we land in another conference with comparable payouts.  If we dont, that money may be needed to simply keep the athletic department funded in the fashion that we've become accustomed to.

Until such time as we land in a stable Conference and the realignment settles down I dont expect much if any of that money to be spent.

  6. I was at Goodwill yesterday and found a series of loosely bound d'nealian handwriting worksheets that had been written on in crayon. The document is titled "Top Secret USF offensive game plan 2012". It too has the initials SH written on it and a picture of Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies under which is written "I love you dad"...

    Bidding starts at $20...

  7. Davis is a short term solution, and Taggart is a long term solution. Given the rapidly changing college athletics landscape, I think we need to make an impression now, and Davis would be better in that respect.

I'm of the belief that as long as USF remains in the Big East that no Coach is more than a short term commitment. If a Coach has marked success as USF he will jump to the SEC, B1G, BIG12, or PAC after only 2-4 years. If the Coach isn't successful then recent history has shown they will be fired at 2-4 years.

That said, I'm not buying into the Taggart is a long term solution nonsense. We need a proven prospect to turn the program around and accept that as long as we are in the Big East we will never hold a high profile Coach for long. In which case Davis is clearly a better prospect and Taggart really shouldnt be in the conversation....
