  1. Thanks for all your research there Jim.  I guess I was off on my recollection of the thletic fees, as you indicated they are currently already higher than what I thought (flat $20, hmm maybe that was computing fees?)

On a different note, even though it'd be good money, I'd hate to have an on campus stadium with a corporate name.  I know Louisville and some others do it, but for a college atmosphere names like Florida field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium or Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium are more appropriate.  Imagine our first home game Leavitt Stadium, or National television covering the 11-0 Bulls facing off against an 11-0 Miami team in "the house that Jim built"

  2. Thats completely understood outrunner, and yes I too would donate more to the cause, and I know this survey has little to no effect on what actually happens.  It just seemed a little decieving to me, and could see someone actually thinking that for $2 extra each hour we'd raise all the money needed for an on campus stadium.

Now I'd be interested to see what the results of a survey were that asked about "8 dollars a credit hour, on top of the current $20 per semester athletics fee"

  3. UL is just as good as UF...

UL would be in the NC game had they not blown it against rutgers

    Absolutely.

And had Louisville made it to the NC game how many people would say the exact opposite?

"You know, UF would have been in the NC game if they didn't lose to Auburn, and almost blow it against Tennessee, and Vandy, and South Carolina......"

    [/sarcasm]

    ;D

  4. lets do the math

$2/credit hour x 135 hours (based on number of hours I took to obtain BSEE) = $270

$270 per student x 42000 students (approximate enrollment) = 11,340,000 over four years.

Well short of the 150 million dollars estimated by Jim of the final cost in the "on Campus stadium questions answered" sticky.  and barely enough every four years to pay the annual bond of 11 million per year (also in the same thread.)

good try, but much other funding would be needed, and $2 per hour is only a small dent in the price of such a project.

  5. I believe that in the last round of negotiations that resulted in an extra game being added, the other conferences became "BCS members".  However, while they might make that claim, they do not get any auto-berths unless they have a team that is ranked higher than a certai level (14th I think).  Nobody considers CUSA to be BCS but CUSA.

Good explanation Mike, but you missed a very important part of the new contract.  Beginning after the '09 year all conferences will be evaluated in several categories (OOC wins, conference strength, Bowl winning %, and others) to determine the automatic BCS conference bids.  It is possible for any of the current conferences (BE, ACC,SEC, PAC10, B10, B12) to lose the automatic berth and C-USA (among others) to pick it up.

However you probably have a better chance hitting the lotto, twice.

  6. I'll take one of the bowl game....Just in case I accidently erase it from my DVR.

My $400 HD-DVR is nearly usless now because its full from this years games.  Someone needs to come out on the market quick with an affordable Blue-ray recorder.  We were really spoiled this year with the number of HD games we had.

  7. Isn't the idea of hosting a bowl game supposed to be to bring in revenue and tourism to a city?  Seems like someone forgot to tell the people of Birmingham.

So very true.  I was shocked by attitude of the police Friday night at 5 points.  As a large group of ECU fans and us USF fans gather on the corner chanting back and forthe ECU, USF, 4&0, and all sorts of other things for well over an hour without a single incident of violence, vanadalism or any other real problems when the Police showed up started tackling people, pulling out pepper spray and arresting people.

Its a bowl game for crying out loud, whatever happened to "No harm, no foul." I've been to FSU bowl games in previous years when we didn't have a bowl game (in Miami and Jacksonville) when this type of behavior went on all night with thousands more fans and nobody got arrested.......  I guess we just gotta make the Gator bowl or BCS game next year.  ;D

  8. So those claims of 7-9k students at games were wrong... :(

I really thought we'd made a lot of progress with the students. The last few days shows we have some work to do.

    5k students is progress

these are your future season tix holders!

    keep it growing

    Got to agree here.

Also I'm not sure how many people know this but the Athletic department sells "Young Alumni" Season Tickets for the student section (I personally have 2).  Alumni are allow to purchase these for 4 seasons after graduating.  These tickets add to the season ticket numbers, but make the student section appear fuller.

I'm not sure how long this program has been going on, this being my first season as Alumni.  Anyone else have these tickets or know how long this program has been in place?

  9.  Yes, you've done it before - the biggest win in your history - but not when the stakes were this high.

Ummm excuse me......  Yes we weren't undefeated (or even close to it), but thanks to a rescheduled game against BE opponent West Virginia, we were still in a prime position to capture the Big East title until that devistating loss at UConn.  Fact is should we have won versus UConn (which IMO is unexcusable)  the WV game would have had the time changed to accomodate national TV (we played at the same time as the ACC Championship game) and billed as the "Big East Championship game."

So yeh the stakes weren't high at all Mr. Watson

  10. Edwin Pope called to end the series. For a hometown booster columnist to say something like that, you know it was even worse in person.

Well I wasn't there, but I was watching it live on TV  (Made that $120 for ESPN Gameplan worth it).  What most people haven't seen from the YouTube and ESPN clips is that when Comcast Sportsnet South went to commercial (Which they did alot during that twenty minutes), The Game plan Feed stayed live when the camera men were just picking up video to show the guys in the truck.  Miami Police were jumping into the stands from the field to break up fighting fans, and police escorting the ejected players off the field who weren't going quietly.  And yes that announcer kept going on and on about FIU coming into "Their house and talking smack."......  Typical Miami.

I can only imaging if FIU would have had more fans in the stands, the rioting would have ended up tearing that dump down.
