  1. JoeB, you're absolutely right, there should have been something in the Trib on the baseball game. There's supposed to be something on each USF baseball, softball game, etc. I've forwarded your comment to our college editor to find out why it wasn't in the paper. If you want to contact him directly, his name is Cesar Brioso and his e-mail is cbrioso@tampatrib.com. You probably already have it, but also feel free to contact me anytime at bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com. Thanks, Brett

  2. BrahmanBull2K, I'm glad you appreciated the Tribune's coverage. Thanks! Also USF97, I scanned the proposed football schedules only after you and others wanted proof they existed and not to "add more fuel to the fire." And if they were 2-for-1s like you mention (which they could end up as, but they are currently proposed as 1-for-1s) the guarantee figures for those games would be different, not the same.

  3. Dave, This is what we had in Sunday's Tribune - that it's a six-game suspension, unless they get it reduced to two games. Thanks, Brett

USF's Suspended Players Sit Out Saturday's Game

TAMPA - University of South Florida WR Jackie Chambers, DE Josh Julmiste and RB Ricky Ponton watched Saturday's game against McNeese State from the sideline.

Chambers and Julmiste told The Tampa Tribune last week they were suspended for a second positive drug test, and USF sources said Ponton also was suspended for a second positive drug test. However, the school has not announced any suspension, and assistant AD John Gerdes said the trio did not play because of a "coach's decision."

Based on USF's substance abuse policy, Chambers, Julmiste and Ponton will each miss USF's first six games, unless they are granted an appeal to reduce the suspensions to two games.

  4. Smazza, Leavitt said he rewarded Julmiste with the start because he was a senior. If they were both underclassmen, Grothe likely would have started instead. That's why after the first practice I reported that Grothe had moved slightly ahead of Julmiste (which you guys all ripped me for), even though I was well aware what Leavitt was saying "publically."

  5. Puc86, I'm glad you mentioned that. Our preview tab is done in advance and we can't list more than one starter per position. That's why when I listed Grothe I mentioned it's just a hunch he gets start. After the preview section was printed in advance a couple of days ago, I learned Wednesday that Julmiste had been named one of the captains. And as I wrote in my USF column today, it's unlikely Julmiste would be named a captain and not start at least the season opener. Thanks for bringing it up. If you other questions let me know - bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com. And thanks for reading.

  6. Steve Bien, since you are apparently a loyal reader (and I appreciate that) of the Tribune, I thought I would explain our philosophy of the Tribune's blogs. It is not a vehicle to report news: if there is USF news, it runs in the Tribune/TBO. I don't reprint my news stories and run them as blogs. The blog is to give additional coverage, more in-depth information and/or opinion on stories, issues, etc., concerning USF. You wrote: "Interesting that the blog had WF unmentioned, and UAB as a footnote.  I'll tell you so much for blogs to be informative I think the intention was certainly delivered since it stirred up a hornets nest on this board." The reason WF was not mentioned in the blog is it is about the home schedule, Wake is a neutral site game and not included in the home ticket package. Wake was mentioned in the story in Saturday's Tribune: http://www.tbo.com/sports/bulls/MGBDNP9CRQE.html

I sent you an E-mail if you want to discuss this further. Thanks for reading. And, oh by the way, here's some news for you and the board: USF got a commitment from Gulf QB Alton Voss.

  7. Just to let you guys and gals know, the Tampa Tribune has changed my Q/A format into a blog format at bulls.tbo.com. And for those out-of-towners that want to get an actual copy of today's Tampa Tribune with the USF at 100 page, just check out The Bulls Report at bulls.tbo.com on how you can get one. Glad it brought back some good memories. Hope everyone had a great Christmas.

  8. I thought this thread was about Brett Favre!! Seriously, the Tribune should have listed USF with the other schools or at least explained that we're not listing USF because it's about traveling to games outside of Tampa. Unfortunately I wasn't aware the travel section was doing this article until I picked up Sunday's paper or I would have made sure USF was well represented. Thanks, Brett

  9. Since I noticed a post directed at me, I thought I would provide a response to answer some general questions. Concerning the so-called "negative" articles in the Tribune. I have simply reported football attendance has decreased 25 percent and men's basketball attendance the past two years is the worst its ever been. That's a fact, like it or not. And a disturbing one for a school entering the Big East next year. I also would have written stories if football attendance had increased 25 percent and or the basketball team was drawing record crowds, so I'm not just looking to bash USF as some may think. As far as reporting the number of players leaving the basketball program - as Brahman Bull2000 says "got too old for my taste" - nearly half of the players have left in 2 years. That's a fact. If nearly half the football roster - 50 or 60 players - left in a two-year period, shouldn't that be reported? Also, I think Brad questioned the salary story on Jose Fernandez. Again, USF is entering the Big East and the women's basketball coach barely makes what a Sun Belt Conference coach makes. Forget C-USA, he's barely up to Sun Belt standards. Those in charge at USF can decide if their coaches need to be paid Big East salaries or Sun Belt salaries. As I've demonstrated in the past five or six years covering USF, I am going to report the news, good and bad. I hope you would want to read an objective view of how your school is faring on a national level. I'm sure this might generate some responses, but I won't respond. However, if you have any questions, feel free to E-mail me and I'll continue to respond to each and every one. Thanks and happy holidays.

    Brett
